  • Scene from WKRP in Cincinnati episode "The Union" (1981): Andy Travis and station manager Arthur Carlson argue about the pros and cons of unionizing the workplace, as Carlson threatened to sell the station if the staff form a union. Scene shows how workers like Andy and managers like Arthur usually see unions.

WKRP In Cincinnati tackled "real-life issues" in a sitcom format, much like "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons." WKRP had a great cast with intelligent stories and humor, something that is sorely missing in television today

I like how Andy acknowledges how important Johnny's contribution is to the station's success. Both Johnny and Andy came from number one markets and Andy knew because of Johnny's time in L.A. with the show he did with Boss Jack when he was Johnny Sunshine that he knew Johnny could bring in the listeners with his on air persona which of course he did as The Doctor. Always have to have a hook to win your audience.

"I'd make a deal with the devil..." and at the end of the episode, Andy did in order to save the station.

About the clip description. Andy's not a worker. He's management. That's why he's not at the union meeting.

Andy is more of a manager than management. He’s the program director and the DJs all report to him, but he still has to fight the real management of the station (Carlson and his mother) for basically everything. And he must be on the side of the employees getting more money - otherwise he wouldn’t have made the deal with Mrs. Carlson to invest in the station if he found a way to keep the union out of there.

Seemed ironic that while he had the most logical explanation for a union, Andy was credited by Mrs Carslon for keeping it from being formed.

If you watch the entire episode, we find out that Andy was playing both sides against the middle. He leveraged the threat of a union so that everybody won. The workers eventually got raises, maybe not as big as they would have in a union, but they got more money. And by finding a way to keep the union out, he got Mrs. Carlson to invest in the business, which he used to make the station more successful.

I remember being in a union. I only remember that I had to be in it to work there. I also doubt that it was as fun as WKRP.

I too have had union and non-union jobs. While the union jobs paid better, those places had more garbage workers than the non-union shops. Cats getting fat doing as little as possible. I hated it.

II - it depends on the situation.
      Sometimes a union helps.
      Sometimes it doesn't.
Lately - it seems to be the latter more than the former.

It's been my experience that front line worker attitudes mirror owner/management attitudes.
If management tries to get as much as possible for as little as possible then so do the front line workers.
Why would anyone expect anything else?
Any management that bad mouths workers is bad mouthing themselves.
