  • Wea-Frog Holsteins of East Earl, Pennsylvania, is the 2023 District 2 Producer of the Year. The farm is owned and operated by Marvin Lee and Robert Zimmerman, who decided to combine their separate operations into one a few years ago. The families work together to milk 100 Holsteins in a tie-stall facility.
The Zimmermans have multiple best management practices in place, including a conservation plan and a nutrient management plan. The family was one of the first to work with the cooperative in its award-winning supply chain partnerships, the Turkey Hill Clean Water Partnership. Through the Partnership, Wea-Frog was able to install a new manure storage system, which has helped to ensure a cleaner environment around their farm, which lies in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
“Wea-Frog was an outstanding producer to us because they were willing to take that leap of faith and trust in Maryland & Virginia and this partnership,” said Hannah Walmer, Sustainability Programs Manager said. “And if we didn't have those initial producers who took the time and energy and trusted us that this was going to work, our sustainability partnerships would never become what they are today.”
Today, partnerships like the ones Wea-Frog helped pilot by MDVA have gained more than $46 million for producers across the cooperative to install important practices and equipment to make farms sustainable for the future.
