The Philly Soda Tax Scam

  • Want a soda? It costs a lot more in Philadelphia thanks to a new tax on artificially-sweetened beverages.

A 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola that once cost $2 now goes for $3. Politicians and activists applauded when the bill was signed. They said the tax was needed to fund early childhood education.
But John Stossel points out that the tax has unintended consequences. It harms local businesses.
"It's a bad tax," Melvin Robinson, owner of Bruno's Pizza, told Stossel. His store is on the outer edge of Philadelphia, so his customers just cross the street to avoid paying the tax.
Philadelphia City Councilman William Greenlee defended the tax, saying "we're raising enough money to put 2,700 kids in Pre-K and to open 11 community schools."
The pizza parlor's customers didn't think their taxes were being well spent. "Preschool? I doubt that very much," one man told Stossel. "The Mayor says he is helping people," Stossel replied. "He ain't helping me. He is tearing me up," the customer answered.
Another unintended consequence is that soda sales are down in Philadelphia, but liquor sales are up. When Stossel mentioned that to Greenlee he replied. "I don't know about that," laughing, "cause we have a liquor tax, too!"
Philadelphians already pay 44 taxes: including state income tax, sales tax, cigarette and alcohol taxes. "You should be rolling in money," Stossel told Councilman Greenlee. "But there's a lot to do out there, John," he responded. Yet a lot of the money goes to non-essential projects. The Office of Arts and Culture receives $4 million, to fund things like "Hip Hop Fundamentals."
"They're funding the arts," Stossel told Melvin, the pizza store owner. "What arts? People trying to live!" he replied.
Melvin has just one request for the politicians: "Stop stealing. That would be nice." Stossel doesn't think the politicians are stealing, but they do pay themselves three times Philadelphia's median wage, and pass bad laws like the soda tax.

@Carol Howard We do have quite high taxes in Sweden but it's not 65% in income tax (around 32%). The more substantial difference is in alcohol, gasoline and tobacco products comparably to the US.
6.18USD per gallon of 98 octane gasoline here
      52.6USD per litre of ethanol
5.36USD per ounce of smoking tobacco.
I think it's fair to represent things accurately instead of spreading rumors.

    • @bergsdal
      @bergsdal 4 года назад +3

@CJ DUNROVIN no... I live in Sweden and we do not pay 65%... The max you can pay in taxes is 50% which is called government tax and you need to earn minimum 40000 us dollar anually (400 00 Swedish krona) then no matter your income, you pay 50% it is the max cap. But on the other side most government service is free and the most and best thing is that school is free from daycare to university which is fucking super great not to be in debt
The average swede will pay 32 % in tax
The Nordic welfare system will never ever work in the us. If you want this kind of system you gotta rebuild the entire us infrastructure. It isn't gonna happend in one day and Americans will have to change their life view and this will never ever happend. And I don't mean it is a bad thing. Imo, don't change. Stay the same and focus more on what you always do

@@raaaaaaaaaam496 bruno's pizza is a dead end job first of all. And its federally required for ALL fulltime workers to have access to health insurance from their employer. 2ndly I worked in the private sector and I currently work as a government employee and I can tell you for a fact that MOST jobs I worked had the exact same.benefits some even had better benefits such as tuition reimbursement, gas/fuel usage pay(for travel to work), more consistent raises, the list goes on. The fact is, the old saying that government jobs are the best jobs is false and its outdated..maybe 50 years ago or even 30 years ago it was true, but in today's economy where companies have to compete for not not customers, but quality employees as well that dynamic has long ago changed.

    • @raaaaaaaaaam496
      @raaaaaaaaaam496 4 года назад +27

Master Shake no not ALL. Only businesses with more than 50 employees. Bruno’s does not. Bruno’s is a poor working businessman. He makes good pizzas and he makes even more money off soda. McDonald’s makes the majority of their profits off soda cause it’s easy to do and every gets a soda with their pizza especially in low income neighborhoods. So the lawmakers who get endless benefits are punishing a man who can’t provide benefits for himself or his employees. When ironically he could afford benefits if the government didn’t make benefits cost so much.

Enforcing the constitution will do just that. the 10th alone would get rid of an overwhelming majority of federal spending. Getting rid of unconstitutional state-level programs like asset forfeiture and eminent domain will save resources which, in turn, saves a butt-load of money. And by enforcing the rest of the constitution would save a lot of government resources from stopping the enforcement of gun control and federal drug bans to forcing the federal government to put us back on the gold standard so that the states will be able to pay their debts.
And while restrictions on the states are few and defined like the fed's delegated power, enforcing those restrictions, including the bill of rights and the 14th amendment, would do a LOT of good.

How taxes like this normally work: Wow! Look at all the money we raised for the schools we have so much that surely we can find new social and city construction projects! Three months later: We blew through the new tax money in fact the new programs are over budget because we spent more deciding on how to use the money than actually spending it. But the projects we started need to be completed so in the meantime we have to cut the schools budget a little bit. But we're going to introduce a new tax to help the schools. He said the tax hits the poor worst, but obesity-related health problems also hit the poor the worst. If we don't reduce the impact of obesity the medical bills cost a lot more than the soda tax does.

Cook county did add tax for beer. Believe it is 10 cents for ever 6 pack or something. Have family in Cook and Lake. They go to Lake county and buy if they are having a party and need beer. People say "Hey its only 10 cents" well that is on top of other additional taxes for alcohol. My receipt for a 12 pack at 7-11 had several lines in it for extra taxes. Crazy!!! Grand total is 8 taxes on beer. 28%!!!!! After typical average joe pays 25% of pay to fed, state, city, etc. Plus property. PLUS gas tax is huge in IL. There is less than half left.

It's a matter of options. You can pay the damn tax, get your drinks elsewhere, or change the type of drink. Some people will choose the first. If you aren't close to the town lines, don't have business to go out of town or if you are in a restaurant eating. Those are all cases where you might choose to still buy a soda.
The point merely is that they changed the relative prices of drinks across types of drinks and across cities. People will react.
Personally, I think it's a stupid policy. What the hell are you doing deciding you can tell others they should adopt what you call a healthy life style and using the threat of force to do it?

They've been making everyone aware for 30+ years and still no cure. Yes, I know there are treatments. Treatments aren't cures. 900 million plus/year to, in reality, never find a cure. If there was a cure found, it would be heavily suppressed because that would end the 900 million/yr. The 900 million is what the federal government throws at breast cancer "research", the campaign to never find a cure pulls in many millions on top of that.

The biggest tax on the poor is the lottery. They say they use the extra money for schools. What they actually do is use the lottery money for the regular school budget and take the tax money that would have been used for schools and spend it on something else. Govt should have to run on just the simple taxes paid. Corporate taxes. Income taxes. Property taxes. Also the govt should have to have a balanced budget every year. Then start lowering taxes paid by the people. Starting with income tax. Then lower property taxes on the poor and middle class. If they don’t have enough money for a project then it doesn’t happen or the private sector has to do it. Things like art have always existed without govt funding and will continue to do so. And families should be responsible for their children’s education pre-K.

Every tax they ever came up with is for the kids, but they always seem to be in need. Lotto/casinos/cigarettes/ ...soda - yep this time they really fixed it.

    John,
I'd like to thank you for your great work. Your interviews are always on point. I'm happy that you are on the consumer's side. High sales-tax comes from the result of Union political donations creating higher taxes for the citizens in most citizen cities that the unions can get a higher pay and better retirement.

When he said "we aren't taxing them to death" John should have brought up taxes charged on funerals and on inheritance. Then said, "taxed to death and beyond actually."

Cook County, Illinois did this. $0.01 per ounce. The consequence of this tax caused people (Myself included) to shop in neighboring counties. But I did not buy just my soda, I also bought my meats, my produce, my canned goods, etc in those same communities. The tax that Cook County implemented actually did more harm as people would do all their grocery shopping in neighboring counties/states. Just like the folks in Denmark would do. Prior to the tax being repealed, Michael Bloomberg was pushing advertisements on TV talking about how the soda tax would IMPROVE childhood health. It ultimately got repealed due to severe pushback. As Americans, we need to stand up against these politicians, let them know we will not re-elect poor decision makers to make positive changes.

But you will re-elect them you always do , why? Example Portland city voters allowed a city tax to pay for some made up reason that was to be repealed after one year and after ten years it's still in place and they still re-elect these thieving bastards which continue to tax the people for more bullshit reasons, which is the reason I don't live n Portland.
You can't fix the problem if you keep electing the same people! It stands to reason that if you continue to over tax or add new taxes for things that do no good, people will leave thus giving these criminals less money to spend and the community will end up like Detroit broke.
When you ask them where the money went and all you hear is ------ NOTHING but Lies or more lies with maybe YOUR OUT OF ORDER, your times up sit down. They will never expose their corruption and they are never punished for their theft and while they sit in their multi million dollar home drinking their soda that they bought in another county laughing at you voters your getting poorer and poorer everyday---- no Christmas for you. I guess to compensate your lost dollars you'll have to get a second or third job.
You know at one time elected persons where not paid, they did the job for free to help build their communities now they get paid an average of three time the average wage just to keep you broke/poor so you have no life- So just shut the fuck up work your three jobs AND PAY YOUR DAMN TAXES SO WE THE POLITICIANS CAN GET A PAY RAISE!
Bitch, bitch, bitch is all you do, you never step up and fix the problem by getting these criminals out of office then you BITCH SOME MORE!
People you have the power to fix this but you never use it. I VOTE EVERY ELECTION DO YOU! I bet if you did there would be no soda tax because you got rid of the corruption and replaced them with better officials.
POWER OF THE VOTE PEOPLE TRY TO USE IT IT MAY SURPRISE YOU!
Remember what happened in the late 1700's with the TEA TAX! You could do the same to the SODA TAX - REBELL.
