- Sometimes you just decide that you just want to get from point A to point B in the least busy road possible. And on this particular trip that's exactly what we did. Leaving Knysna, we headed off on our next adventure. Making our way to Oudshoorn, we took the road less traveled - the Prince Alfred's Pass. Sometimes its not so much about destination but rather the journey getting there, and this pass did not disappoint!
Having only done very little of the pass in the past, this was the perfect opportunity for us to see what the entire pass had to offer. The pass is not for the faint of heart keeping you busy for a good couple of hours, but giving you endless views of nature, where you have to earn it’s respect, dodging pot holes, driving steep inclines, sharp hairpins and blind corners.
The pass runs all the way from Knysna to Uniondale, and is one of South Africa’s longest passes being built by the master trail builder, Thomas Bain.
Shortly after making our way through the first forest section we took a small detour up to the Spitskop look out point.
The rest of the past was just scenic beauty. Any vehicle with good ground clearance shouldn’t have to much of a struggle making it along the pass and in total we only passed about 5 other vehicles on the entire pass.
As long as you keep your wits around you, you shouldn’t have too much of a struggle navigating the uncountable corners, hairpins and ruts along the pass.
The pass is truly one of the best passes that I have ever driven with all the views, different terrains and the architectural marvel that went into the building of this pass. The old timers sure didn’t have it easy, but they sure did do a good job of it.
So my advice, grab a friend or loved one, pack your goodies and go out and adventure. Discover the hidden roads, the road less traveled and explore what’s around you. After all, we only live once so may as well do it right.

Happy to subscribe. Keep uploading😬👌
Thanks for subscribing :) it’s still on my bucket list to ride that pass with my mountain bike.
My Darlingmost Wificle and I went on that road while on our honeymoon, with a brand new Monza. 😂. Now, almost 38 years later, we consider going back there. 😊
I love that! You should totally go back and enjoy the views, but also to see how much its changed. Enjoy the trip!
Good stuff guys. You should've mentioned you were in the Garden Route National Park when at Spitzkop.
Thanks Bruce!
I've driven an old school Merc and Hyundai up to that viewpoint. It was super dodgey, but we made it and the view is stunning!
Yea I think in the wet you may have a bit of a challenge but well worth it. I am sure one of the Nuts & Bolts or similar rallys must go along here at some point. If they don't, they should!
@@RichardBauer_ It was wet and those roads in the forest is extremely slippery when wet! It was a Nuts and Bolts Merc we took up there and they really love those roads out there! Super scenic
Did you make a video about it?
Nice edit bud :)
No more ‘Prince Albert nailed it’. That was my bad! 😂
Haahaha, that last one sounded like a constepated elephant. Hahaha. Great video you guys. Added it to my bucket list. Looks like a really lekker pass to drive. Thanx for sharing your experience. Was a fun video to watch. Really looking forward to what you guys will post when in the States.
I can’t even explain how to blow in the trumpet. Haha. It’s weird. You can’t just blow, you have to almost make like a farting noise into it. Haha. Get the entire family to give it a go and enjoy the laugh 😝
@@RichardBauer_ hahahha, will definitely give it a bash. Hahaha. Looks fun.
Howsit bud.thanks nice vid. How long did it take you to get to Uniondale?
I can’t remember but way longer than anyone else because I was filming etc. filming makes everything take longer lol

OK, what's the distance of it? Is 3 hours enough?
@ElecAndAll should be good if road conditions are fine. Those roads can get gnarly sometimes.
Volgens my padkaart is dit die Prince Alfred pas. Net ter info. Prince Albert is wel ʼn dorp maar nie seker of daar ook so pas is nie.
Hy het hom net verspreek; voor dit die regte naam gebruik.
