The Real-Life Captain Morgan Was More Interesting Than His Rum

- When you hear the name "Captain Morgan," images of bros posing with a handle of spiced rum with one foot danging precariously in the air probably come to mind. While there were plenty of pirates whose reputations were built on boozin' it up with bar wenches à la modern rum-guzzling frat bros, the real Captain Morgan is not one of them.
Sir Henry Morgan doesn't sound like the name one of the most terrifying pirates in the Caribbean - but the ruthless Captain Henry Morgan propelled himself to fame and riches by terrorizing his enemies and seizing a fortune in gold from the Spanish. The history of piracy is full of surprises, and these Henry Morgan facts are no exception.

@@grimsonforce7504 well that is seriously misguided if it happens. In Canada where I'm from, we view social programming as a service we give to ourselves. The middle class and the working class generate all the wealth, through our governments we choose to give ourselves social supports. And one of the biggest protections we have is the fact that we ban corporate donations into the political process. Most of our elected officials are not millionaires or billionaires as a result.

I lived in the Caribbean for almost ten years and became a serious rum head- Captain Morgan’s is nasty. And for the record, I’ve got a buddy on one island that’s been dressing as a pirate for years. Like, almost every day. He threw legendary pirate parties on a beach at midnight. Twenty or so pirate flags in the sand, pirate music, loads of booze and a weapons table with throwing axes, knives, swords, and wooden targets. Still amazed nobody ever died...
to be fair who did have good sense of alcohols as a kid? its all whatever you can get your hands on and cheap. Like Sierra Nevada is the gateway craft beer. I like Diplamatico as my rum
Correct! I'm from the Caribbean; and Captain Morgan’s should not be called "rum"

FINALLY!! Been waiting for this for years!! A proper little documentary on Henry Morgan! I grew up next to his families house in Tredegar in South Wales ! Always been interested in him and loved tracing his steps in Cuba!!!
My ancestor, John Paul Tingle, was a privateer during the Revolution who preyed on British ships. The British eventually caught him and hung him at Annapolis docks.

Lol pretty stupid business plan to be a privateer against the British at that time
Henry Morgan was even mentioned in a Toei anime from the 1960s called the Pirate Prince, which was created with permission from Shotaro Ishinomori, the Kamen Rider creator.

I was at the docks and saw a man with a wooden leg, a hook for a hand and an eye patch. I asked him how he lost his hand and he said "Me matey fell overboard and when I reached in to scoop him up a blasted shark bit me hand clean off". Then I asked about his leg and he answered "I was in a sea battle with a Spanish man-o-war and a cannonball blew me leg to smithereens". Then I inquired about his missing eye and with a forlorn look he said "A seagull pooped right in me eye matey". When I told him that seagull poop wouldn't take out your eye he answered "Arghh, twere me first day with the hook".

There is another legend: Captain Bravo. He was a brave and warring pirate that took care of this men. One day, from the crows nest a pirate warned 3 rival boats are approaching! Captain Bravo yelled, Bring me my red shirt! The 3 rival boat approached and Captain Bravo lead his men to victory! Days later, from the crows nest, a pair are warned 4 enemy shops are fast approaching! Capt. BrVo yelled man your stations and bring me my red shirt! They fought the battle and won. That evening, sitting around with their spoils of war, a pirate asked, Capt Bravo, you lead us into battles that we certainly would not try, you bring out the best of us in battle why though, do you ask for your red shirt before battle? Capt Bravo tells them, the red will hide my blood from you if I were to be injured, I wouldn’t want you to know and you all will continue fighting. Oh, they are so pleased with Capt. Bravo, what a fine Captain he is. The next day, from the crows nest, 7 enemy ships are approaching!!! Capt Bravo yelled, Bring me my brown pants!!!!!!

Apparently Captain Morgan isn't considered a rum because of its low alcohol content but a rum flavoured liqueur, didnt know that
Its also heavily flavored, colored and sweetened after distillation.
@@peterhamlet1415 and then I add the Dr Pepper with 25 more flavors plus some lime
That stuff is disgusting. 🤮
At least in the EU, in addition to the alcohol content requirement (at least 37.5%), a liquor has to be fermented from sugar cane, not have added flavorings, not have more than 100 g of added sugar per liter, nor have coloring other than caramel (E150d) added to it in order to be allowed to be marketed as rum.

I loved this episode simply because I am from Panama, the place that Capt. Morgan raided and massacred so many, and yet in my country we learn so little as to why he did what he did and really who was he. We’re just thought to basically hate the man, this was absolutely interesting to learn about him and how much of a bad ass he really was, the crazy part about this is that I’ve been plenty of time in Portobelo and the city that he destroyed, it’s intense to see. just found this channel, definitely subscribing! Thanks
Found another reason to love the rum even more.
Man, this is some rich history information. If done right this could either be a standalone movie, TV series, or a nice addition to the Pirates of the Caribbean
They forgot to add why he was on the island Jamaica in the first place. He kept crashing his ships there. After he crashed so many, the king refused to get him another ship. lol
If you were our history teacher maybe I wouldn’t have fell asleep everyday in class (he got used to it and left me alone)
