  • On this day in 1971, George Harrison and Ravi Shankar staged two concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden that brought together a star-studded cast of musicians to alert the world to the plight of the Bangladeshi people, victims of simultaneous floods, famine and civil war.
The Concert for Bangladesh, which supported UNICEF’s programs in the country, pioneered the all-star concert benefit model, which continues to move hearts and raise funds today.
Please support the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF and its ongoing work to help get critical aid to the children who need it most.

I am from Bangladesh. During our liberation war in 1971, that money from that concert helped us a lot. And now the name "George Harrison" and his great work for our liberation is written in the text books of every children in our country. I am a 12th class student and I am giving entrance exams for different universities and I literally have to know the details of this concert to appear in the tests. Thank you George Harrison.

I came across the name "George Harrison" in my text book when I was around 10. The passage was about how he helped us during the war by gaining the attention of the west world over the war crisis. Then, I didn’t know who he was very well but now I'm 16 and a huge Beatles fan and genuinely very proud of that.
Love and Respect from Bangladesh and we are really grateful for what you did for us 🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩

I, a boy who was born in an independent country named Bangladesh, grew up in the country that was first introduced to the western world by this wonderful gentleman, been listening and playing "Now and then" on my guitar. My eyes got all teary seeing the young George Harrison in a new Beatles music video probably for the last time. So I had to come to this video. There's probably no proper word to thank this man. @@tapashchakravarty7443 You have got wrong idea. Bangladeshi people also respect Ravi Shankar. Though he always mentioned that some of his friends and family members used to live in Bangladesh, so he was anxious for them and as so far he was also aware about the serious political environment of this country. He knew it that no Western countries were making any news to let people know about the circumstances of Bangladesh. So, at first Ravi explained everything about Bangladesh's domestic scenerio to George. As like other western people Harrison also didn't know anything about that times Bangladesh. When Ravi asked for help to do something to let people know , in reply George told him why not arrange a concert with lots of good singers and in that concert they will tell people about Bangladesh's miserable situation. Ravi liked George's advice. He agreed with him.Later this Beatle ranged many singer artists for a month prior the concert. Many of them agreed except Paul McCartney. John was also interested in it but had to left for London. So, he missed the concert. For your knowledge, also want to tell you that Bangladesh govt has given all these artists their deserving respects, award s etc. Towards these musicians including Ravi Shankar. So, don't get emotional unnecessarily. Every thing is alright here.

I want to tell you a very harsh and funny thing about most of the bangladeshi people's perceptions about these 2 men. Most of the Bangladeshi people at least know that Pandit Ravi Shankar is a legendary Indian setar player. But can you believe it that they have no ideas about worlds most iconic, most influential and greatest rock n roll boy band ' The Beatles'? Only those like me knows about them have ideas, knowledge about them. This country's most of the people still don't know that George belongs to that group. In fact they still believe/know it that Harrison is an American. They have zero percent interest into knowing that who is this man George Harrison. Now what you will say about this? What you r seeing or reading in comment section is just bullshit love and respect for this man.Got it Tapash! Such shame that 50 years have passed but we still doesn't know about this man , his work, other great music creations, his legendary band and about his nationality. But, don't worry as Mr. Ravi Shankar is from our neighboring country may be that's why people here have much more ideas about him. Ignore any comment sections related to this concert. I've always felt very moved & humbled by Harrison's contribution & love towards my country. It was more than a performance. The way he stood beside Bangladesh & tried to help in one of the the most brutally horrifying genocide & war is something that makes me respect him immensely. I always say people don't talk enough about him. But when I saw his face & heard him beautifully singing Bangladesh on one of the local TV channels, I felt gratitude. I remember you Sir, will always remember you Friend of Bangladesh. I hope the upcoming generations will also know you, your heart & music. RESPECT & LOVE ❤️

So much talent, like he said, want to know him, listen to the music, the Beatles had their time,it was the 1960s, different era, Eric Faulkner of the bay city rollers said the same thing, you want to know him better listen to his music, he admired Paul McCartney, with fans, how he felt with it, ten years before as the beatles.eric talked about life, your a woman, don't stop the music, don't let the music for, money honey was not written for the band, or co written with woody as written, he wrote it at twelve, and played it at the top story club in Edinburgh, from twelve to thirteen, when he started a high school band until seventeen, getting into the band pilot, also from Edinburgh, who went onto the Alan parsons project.it was called sugar, then kip, which went onto his solo stuff talking about being in a band with a thousand names, called playing in a rock and roll band.the rollers like badfinger, who John Lennon named, cause he was in a bad mood,Paul giving them the song come and get it, George wanting to manage them, but whenever America gets involved, bad things happen, ripped off, no money, deaths,so much talent, just kids by today's standard, but more grown up then kids today, people after all, very sad, problems inside the band, as well as outside.

Mom dropped me off at the State Theater to see this. I was in 6th grade. All my friends went to see "Song of the South" by disney. I sat on the front row...me and a bunch of hippies lol. I remember Ravi Shankar more than anything (his daughter is Nora Jones). And bob...his performance was stripped down and raw.
Still have the album and used to have concert on VHS.

      John Lennon:
Personal Issues: John Lennon initially expressed interest in participating in the Concert for Bangladesh and was in talks to perform. However, according to some accounts, his then-wife, Yoko Ono, wanted to perform alongside him, which led to tensions. George Harrison, who organized the concert, reportedly preferred that Yoko not perform, leading to John deciding to withdraw from the event altogether.
Conflict with Yoko Ono: Some sources suggest that John’s withdrawal was partly due to ongoing personal and creative differences with Yoko Ono and George Harrison. These tensions were exacerbated by the fact that Yoko was not welcomed by George in the same way John might have expected.
      Paul McCartney:
Estrangement from The Beatles: By 1971, Paul McCartney was deeply involved in his solo career and his band, Wings. He was also estranged from his former bandmates due to the legal disputes surrounding The Beatles' breakup. Paul was reportedly reluctant to reunite with any of the former Beatles members at that time, as he felt it might be seen as a sign of reconciliation, which he wasn’t ready for.
Legal Battles: Paul was involved in legal battles with the other Beatles members over the band's dissolution and the management of their business affairs, making any potential reunion at the Concert for Bangladesh complicated and unlikely.
