Fun anecdotal story: I used to work at a liquor store, and most days I'd bring my Vita in. Every now and then my customers would sort of recognize it, and they'd always say something like "oh my god, is that a PSP?! I fucking loved my PSP back in the day!" They all had fond memories of the PSP, but _nobody_ recognized it as a Vita. And when I told them it was a Vita, _not one single person_ had ever heard of the damn thing. I always had to tell them that Sony made a follow-up handheld. Imagine if Sony had actually marketed the Vita instead of completely ignoring it.
Bro, same story here. I used to play my PS Vita on break at the hospital I worked at. A couple people said, "is that a PSP?" No one knew what a Vita was.
2:08 This actually unsettled me because I did buy a PSP from Japan and it WAS sticky and grubby. After giving it a thorough clean and buying an EU spec cable for the charger, I turned it on and the browsing history explained it.
I've spent like 10 years on RUclips and the last 2 years I've noticed a lot of channels under 50k to have high quality content. Since Patreon exists some of those little channel are able to do it full time while only racking up 20k views
Was torn between a ds and psp as a kid. Last second I went with the psp, very underrated. But it did suck that all my friends at the time had the ds and would play Mario cart on the bus.
I'd say "successful failure" is the best way to describe how the PSP performed commercially. It failed to undermine Nintendo's grasp on the handheld gaming market - which is what it set out to do in the first place - but it also enjoyed as much success as the 3DS would achieve later down the line, if not a pinch more.
When I'm deployed to Afghanistan in 2009, everyone took their laptop or DS with them, some even took their Wii or 360s with them. I took my PSP, as well as Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Dissidia, and God of War. I had plenty of use from the beast and with the ability to put it in sleep mode and not have to worry about losing hours of progress because you can't save the game was a nice added touch.
PSP was probably my favourite handheld. There was such a great line up of handheld games such as God of War, Ratchet and Clank and Metal Gear Solid to name a few. I do remember on launch they were really expensive compared to the DS and the PSP GO was such a bizarre version of the console which I wouldn't recommend at all.
Are you shitting me with this production quality right now?! How the hell does this channel have less than 25k subs?! I'm not exaggerating when I say that Junko easily has the highest quality game videos I've ever seen. They give me early internet/TechTV vibes.
A lot of the ports / rereleases to the PSP weren't just a "slices of the experience" or "lite" versions of the originals but they were perfect adaptations. Some of them were even better than the originals because they came with new features, content, etc.
Resistance Retribution, Killzone Liberation, Dissidia Final Fantasy, Persona, and PLENTY of older games made this one of the most fun times ever for me in highschool, even though I got mine a year before the Vita came out lol
My pebble brain couldn’t even play the games right on the psp. I remember getting it and I took the disc out of the white case thinking it was the case cover. Good times.
Bro really gets it lol. From the fuckin Indian voice "leaking" the Xbox "180" to playing spiderman PS1 specifically on that Mickey mouse tv. I swear if I didn't know any better I'd have thought we grew up in the same house. I played on that TV every single day
You say Crash had no real history with 2D games, but the Crash games on GBA were basically full game versions of the 2D bonus stages from the PS1 games. Nothing groundbreaking these days, but it definitely helped make Huge Adventure and N-Tranced two of the best post-PS1 Crash Bandicoot games until Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time! became a thing, especially during a time where Crash Bandicoot games on home consoles...weren't the best, to say the least.
I remember getting the White Darth Vader PSP which had Rogue Squadron. I played the shit out of that thing. I also used it as a media player(despite only having a small amount of memory on it). I sold it because I needed money for rent. Boy do I miss it. A lot of great memories of staying up late playing Battlefront 2, watching movies/tv on it, and occasionally doing multiplayer stuff with friends.
My older cousin, who's about 19 now, had one of these. That was like 6 years ago. I used to play some of the games she had on it alot even though I was terrible at those games. Those were some gud days 😌
I got a used model from gamestop in2007, a 1000 model an 4gig card, wipeout pure, battlefront 2, harry potter and the order of the phoenix (the game) and I think a couple of umd movies. I had to trade-in half my ps2 games, my ds and all my games for it and still had to owed my parents like 30 bucks. But man was it worth it. I loved that psp. Still to this day I always have my psp go that I bought a couple years ago. I doubt Ill stop until they make a small handheld that can emulate psp perfectly. If you never owned a psp, get one. Theres tons of fun still left in them.
Great video. I'm suprised that you didn't mention the Monster Hunter games on there which were probably the most impressive games in terms of graphics on there. The textures, shapes and details could be compared to early PS3 games. (If you ignore the resolution of the psp of course)
The nostalgia is overflowing. My first videogame thingy console was the PSP. I had a hacked version and had so many games, some of the ripped incomplete versions, but most times they had the cutscenes and everything. I later got a Vita, and play the hell out of that too. I traded it before I could get to the homebrew and piracy stuff, it was a shame. They are great handhelds but I never understood why the designers decided that having a second analog stick and a couple more of shoulder buttons was simply not in the table.
The PSP was a king. You want video on the go? PSP! You wanna watch Family Guy? PSP? Spiderman the Movie, buddy we got THE GAME TOO! Same system, ya can't do THAT on DS! Ratoullie? Of course! Sports games! Yes! Everything a YungJunko would love, garbage puzzle games? What portable system doesn't have em? The only other character I know named Junko? She's on PSP. CARS ON PSP UMD VIDEO YES SIR WE GOT IT! No Pokemon though, we uh, we couldn't make that happen. But we've got Digimon....anyone?
Keep making these kinds of videos and I know you'll blow up someday, such quality and great editing to your videos. Subscribed and looking forward to more! Take care.
Interestingly the PSP wasn't the first device to have the XMB. That was the PSX, which was a PS2 based digital video recorder released 2003 exclusively in Japan. Of course it's mostly forgotten today and people use PSX to refer to the original Playstation which used it as a preproduction codename.
I'm so happy you are covering the PSP so extensivelly. It's my favorite console of all time. Some things you might want to check out, if you haven't already. Ace Combat X and X2, two great high effort games released for the PSP that are as good (if not better) than the ones in home console. Also there are ports of Doom and Quake on the PSP that work great. 10 Years ago I was working on mods for these ports with the PSP in mind. Sadly those are dead projects, but you can still check out other stuff like this in the PSP page on ModDB. Also there are emulators that work really well inside the PSP! Worth checking out (although I don't remember their names, you could play stuff from the SNES for example inside the PSP and they worked great).
I always had a handheld growing up the psp 1000 and gba were my childhood. GTA VCS and Star Wars Battlefront, Tony Hawk Underground 2 and God of war were my favorites
Been loving this content so far man, and I gotta say I have finally talked to someone who speaks my language with the PSP and even Vita too, the hacking scene included too. I've used my Vita as a PSP lately, cause I got the space to try so many games and ports, and I have access to the extra joystick and touch-screen shortcuts making the Battlefront games amazing on the system, along with any other shooters. You just might need to also check out Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, if you actually do play and enjoy stuff like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts especially. ^^; Great video man 👍
I loved the psp... chili con carnage, killzone liberation, echo chrome, syphon filter, crisis core, monster hunter, grand theft auto, metal gear...oh the memories
The PSP definitely not a failure. It was the first to provide a near console experience. I remember playing GTA Liberty City Stories back in High School. I’ll get the game again and other titles too. Also, I enjoy the Vita regardless of the system being a failure.
Nice to see people really enjoyed the PSP I found one of my all time favourite games on it, gravity rush, fantastic concept and atmosphere all done with portability, meaning I could actually enjoy some time at work.
i really hope we do get a new PlayStation handheld. I bought a Vita last year, and also picked back up my old PSP. I’ve been having a BLAST. So many great games are on those two machines, many of them not available anywhere else. The Vita specifically is a tragic tale, so underappreciated. I’d buy a Vita 2/PSP2 as fast as I could if they ever announced it but unfortunately I don’t see that being very likely any time soon.
I owned a couple PSPs over the years solely for the Monster Hunter games. I was playing the og monster hunter and mh2 way back in the day and I absolutely loved them. I've still got a psp and monster hunter, but it won't read games for some reason.
Summed up well. I too never knew how to use anything but games on my PSP but it was still great with Battlefront 2, Renegade Squadron, Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, Gran Turismo, Lego Batman, Sims 2 the weird original different from PC or console type thing like with most GBA Sims games type approach and Sims 2 Pets and more besides expanding to Ghost of Sparta, WipEout Pulse, Ridge Racer 2, Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast (used to own Xbox version but not anymore but on PSP it's great), Everybody's Golf, Resistance Retribution, Coded Arms, Killzone Liberation, Practical Intelligence Quotient, Lumines, Medal of Honor Heroes 1&2, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo, Final Fantasy 1, Parappa, Minis being their mobile games for PS3/PSP program (had a few volumes but I have Volume 1), and more from first and third party some I never played on PSP or those IPs at all before and my introduction to them is on PSP in some cases. I do wish to play Crush and other PSP puzzle games I've seen though. Researched a bunch and excited to try them out. Already did Practical Intelligence Quotient 2 or Exit but still making my way through some others. Just looked on Metacritic for a bunch besides Dev research on Wikipedia as you do to see what's out there for titles, Devs, publishers and game connections. Always loved my PSP and do my Vita. The Wii U and Vita have been great 'niche with tons of good experiences' to make me really think about console gimmicks and niche things and not caring about what's popular (though had to research what they were at first as never saw ads or people talk about them until I did my own digging as before wasn't always looking at video game news heavily like I do now and collecting) while the PSP and Wii have tons of hidden gems and fun still in them I love to explore. To me the PSP was my smart phone for music and games and I always think in a silly way that handhelds were the phone/media player superior to smart phones as I honestly hate them but we have to have them. A PSP/Vita or PC/Laptop to get things done is all I need. Didn't have many but the more PSP games I get the more impressed I am. Even my first UMD movies this late (Spiderman 2 and Hitch) made me impressed. Sure the format is what it is but still cool to experience even besides streaming as still prefer physical tv shows and movies of favourites and those I don't care for leaving as streaming only and ignoring. Using a cable to my TV with my PSP this late with a 2000 model when having a 1000 model for years when I dreamed of being able to was so magical that even with the Switch the Wii U and PSP felt more magical doing it with handheld on a tv or dual screens different from the DS (had a DS but the Wii U got me to love dual screens and gyro more than I used to and care for the 3DS to buy one for the first time, the Wii coming out of the garage for Wii and first time playing a GameCube game and Switch for Christmas).
I picked up a broken PSP for cheap from Japan earlier this year, fixed it up and it's EDC now, it's so good. Luckily, it wasn't sticky, but someone did leave a whole Shiba Inu under the analog stick.
Psp was my main console for like 5 years before I got a PS3, my main console and the one I'm current collecting for, I do not see the PSP as a failure, sold more than NES, SNES, N64, Xbox, Xbox One... Need me say more? Oh yes, more than any Sega Console
My list of favorite/underrated games: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Gran Turismo Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (aka BF3!!!!) Modnation Racers Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai: Another Road Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Medal of Honor: Heroes
8:30 well on the bright side you can still play Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on iOS or Android devices which has better graphics and performance then Lego Star Wars II on PSP and it's even compatible with certain mobile phone controllers it's a really underrated mobile phone port.
I accidentally wiped my entire PSP library because I didn't know what "format" and "delete" meant. And I torturously played every game again because I was down bad.
Fun anecdotal story: I used to work at a liquor store, and most days I'd bring my Vita in. Every now and then my customers would sort of recognize it, and they'd always say something like "oh my god, is that a PSP?! I fucking loved my PSP back in the day!" I always had to tell them that Sony made a follow-up handheld. Imagine if Sony had actually marketed the Vita instead of completely ignoring it.
All they had to do is call it PSP 2 and have standard micro SD cards for memory, that's it. People just didn't understand that vita was PSP 2.
You are not alone with that story. It's a shame ppl don't know about the power of the vita! If you haven't modded it, I recommend it, it is quite epic
absolutely loved my vita such a shame it was so sidelined
Bro, same story here. I used to play my PS Vita on break at the hospital I worked at. A couple people said, "is that a PSP?" No one knew what a Vita was.
It looking too similar to the PSP also didnt help.

This actually unsettled me because I did buy a PSP from Japan and it WAS sticky and grubby. After giving it a thorough clean and buying an EU spec cable for the charger, I turned it on and the browsing history explained it.

I Got the Psp first with the AtV game and Lords of Dogtown UMD, I’ll never forget. Ended up getting a DSi down the line and enjoyed both
I thought this was a big channel I never heard of before. Great video!
Me too this is pretty brilliant can’t wait to see him blowup
I'd say "successful failure" is the best way to describe how the PSP performed commercially. MEASURED SUCCESS, _that's_ the phrase I was thinking of!
When I'm deployed to Afghanistan in 2009, everyone took their laptop or DS with them, some even took their Wii or 360s with them. I took my PSP, as well as Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Dissidia, and God of War. An insomnia game I can play while suffering from insomnia? Sold.
One day we will be able to experience the sweet euphoria of sleep again. For now, all we have is PSP brother
3:47 you unlocked some deep rooted memories in me they have been locked away for a decade. That fucking boot up sound oh my god.
PSP was probably my favourite handheld. There was such a great line up of handheld games such as God of War, Ratchet and Clank and Metal Gear Solid to name a few.

The PSP still surprises me 17 years later
A lot of the ports / rereleases to the PSP weren't just a "slices of the experience" or "lite" versions of the originals but they were perfect adaptations. Some of them were even better than the originals because they came with new features, content, etc.
Yup. PSP version of Force Unleashed is still my favorite version to this day because it has a longer campaign and tons more extra content.
There's a treasure trove of Japanese exclusive games on PSP, and as a Kamen Rider and Super Robot Wars fan I couldn't be happier
Resistance Retribution, Killzone Liberation, Dissidia Final Fantasy, Persona, and PLENTY of older games made this one of the most fun times ever for me in highschool, even though I got mine a year before the Vita came out lol
the "pls 5 star my video" really got me.
Mortal Kombat Unchained the PSP port of Deception was pretty much the exact game but also having the content of the Game cube and home console in one.
My pebble brain couldn’t even play the games right on the psp. I remember getting it and I took the disc out of the white case thinking it was the case cover. Good times.
From the way you described it on Reddit, I was unsure what I was in for but I love the vibes. Feels nostalgic.
Patapon was legitimately my most played game for years before I got a gaming PC. It's so good that I wish it was more valued by the gaming community
Seriously my Favorite Handheld Console.....
I have so many fond memories of the psp.
I've never seen such great and frequent content in a channel this small. You are going places my dude, I love your work!
LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!!!!!
Every song in every video back in the day

Yea the Crash Huge Adventure was a great game spent lots of time trying to beat that one as a kid.

Nice! I used to have a GO but lost it almost a year ago now. But I’m thinking of getting myself a 3000 so I can relive nostalgia
I got a used model from gamestop in2007, a 1000 model an 4gig card, wipeout pure, battlefront 2, harry potter and the order of the phoenix (the game) and I think a couple of umd movies. @@YungJunko How do you know I'm not your father.
Gonna be real with you Juko. I'm currently been writing a PSP vid in my script folder. I'm glad to see more love for the system.

Great video.
I'm suprised that you didn't mention the Monster Hunter games on there which were probably the most impressive games in terms of graphics on there.
The textures, shapes and details could be compared to early PS3 games. (If you ignore the resolution of the psp of course)
The psp is technically an adult now
The nostalgia is overflowing. My first videogame thingy console was the PSP. I had a hacked version and had so many games, some of the ripped incomplete versions, but most times they had the cutscenes and everything. I later got a Vita, and play the hell out of that too. They are great handhelds but I never understood why the designers decided that having a second analog stick and a couple more of shoulder buttons was simply not in the table.
I got a used PSP back in 2007 just to play Crush. Such a unique game on a system with so many unique games.
Dang you....you made me nostalgic for the psp and wanna start collecting for the system again.....the magic of the psp is strong
I have many memories of this handheld as a kid. Most of it playing socom fireteam bravo 2/3. Had such a great online community.
3:30 Coded Arms was my favorite psp shooter.
That windows movie maker leak was spot on. My account is old enough to know.

Great video. Such a nostalgia.
I’m thinking about getting one again just to have a portable emulator console
I always had a handheld growing up the psp 1000 and gba were my childhood. GTA VCS and Star Wars Battlefront, Tony Hawk Underground 2 and God of war were my favorites

PSP is life
I like the death Jr series and dead head Fred. Some of my favorite psp games that aren't talked about that often
I remember how cool the psp was they would show it in the movies In the mid 2000s and the cool character was always playing on it

THUG 2 Remix is the best portable Tony Hawk game in existence. PSP felt like a portable PS2
A finger on a monkey's paw curled when you said we'll get another PS handheld one day
Oh shit, Crush 3D for 3DS is a cleaned-up, lameified version of a sick PSP game? That had an actual art style?

And an excellent tour of all the things I loved about the fantastic little PSP.
490th subscriber. Great channel!
Why can‘t Sony just release another handheld..
I've always wanted one of these when I was a kid and unfortunately I still don't own one
Even now, as an emulator app in my phone; the PSP is still impressive.

For something that was none nintendo 80 million units is impressive
Psp was my main console for like 5 years before I got a PS3, my main console and the one I'm current collecting for, I do not see the PSP as a failure, sold more than NES, SNES, N64, Xbox, Xbox One... Need me say more? Oh yes, more than any Sega Console
My list of favorite/underrated games:
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Gran Turismo
Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines
Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (aka BF3!!!!)
Modnation Racers
Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai: Another Road
Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Medal of Honor: Heroes
8:30 well on the bright side you can still play Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on iOS or Android devices which has better graphics and performance then Lego Star Wars II on PSP and it's even compatible with certain mobile phone controllers it's a really underrated mobile phone port.
You should do a video on the ds now.
You know whats scary in two more years the psp is going to be old enough to drink
He sounds like a deeper voiced videogamedunkey
I accidentally wiped my entire PSP library because I didn't know what "format" and "delete" meant. And I torturously played every game again because I was down bad.
