The literary references in this song got me started on a whole summer's worth of reading and researching - John Berryman, Jack Kerouac - just an awesome time, plus it's such a great song even aside from the lyrics!
When I became a teenager in the early 1990's, I became a massive fan of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan...something about unyielding, anthemic rock and roll backing up absolutely brilliant lyrics...given the state of rock at that time, I never thought I'd hear a song that would move me like "Like a Rolling Stone," "I Want You," "Born to Run," "Backstreets" or "Jungleland." To Craig Finn and Co...Thank you so much for proving me wrong. You guys are the real fucking deal.
It's refreshing to see a band become successful based on their musical talent, and not their visual style. It's also good to see a music video that's just the band doing what they do best.
As a Minnesotan, it's always fun hearing "one of us" sing a song about places we know. Easily one of our greatest faults as a state, but nevertheless, it feels good
I'm reading On The Road right now, this is rather pleasing. I feel also pleased by the way they look, since they didn't get the contract thanks to a quick judge based on their appearance.
I'm eight years behind. Today was the first time I've heard this band. This is pretty great. Take mid 80s Elvis Costello, preserve him and change his accent to deep American midwestern and voilà. Great great stuff.
Craig Finn is my favorite songwriter of the decade. I listen to Hold Steady all the time. Hopefully, someone in the future will look back and realize what quite a bit of this decade missed out on.
Making a play for Rock & Roll heaven, with possessed magic, this song abandon with conviction. Rock & fucking Roll- and he's tired of all the dehydration if you get a chance, see em live- The Hold Steady deliver seen them twice and loved as did everyone else (The Fillmore & Great American Music Hall)
Craig Finn is my favorite songwriter of the decade. I listen to Hold Steady all the time. Hopefully, someone in the future will look back and realize what quite a bit of this decade missed out on. The reason they aren't given the attention they deserve is because of their look and performance. maybe one day we'll get past appearance and appreciate bands for their music, not for being cool or good looking.
I own 384738946387645634756437865438796543789658435643795643756437859634565846547465746574657465836589745683746578943658743654387564378567453657843783634765089475839475947543765786578468765 LPs and this is a great song.
Never cared much for 'em. But this song is one of the greatest things created. The best pre-1980 Springsteen song mixed with everthing that made the 'Mats the greatest band ever. Well, almost. The Mats had 4567 songs that were brilliant, of course. If you've ever lived yer life in a way that was really bad for your body but good for your living heart n soul you should feel perfectly at home in these lyrics.
Funny is, I was surfing through vids popping up on the right, the Vaccines 10 million views, Interpol 11 million, the Libertines 8 million, and I clicked this one 272.000 views and they are much better then all those bands combined. Gotta love YT and the taste of the masses.
No...that's not what I'm saying. I think there have been plenty of great bands and artists since Bruce. But these are the first guys that do the same style of keyboard flourish, lyric-driven rock & roll that have made the kind of impression that Dylan and Bruce made on me as a teenager
Im glad they put this song in Criminal minds as well as Lazy eye on criminal minds. i was watching it and I went "Oh shit, they actually put good songs on shows like these?". Now im hearing again listening. Love the guitar especially on this song.
Jut saw them on VH1 doing a song live. Must of been their mainstream music television debut or something. Anyways, I miss the hell out of Franz being in this band.
Now that's a music video. No fancy ridiculous artsy set pieces, no pretentious half-naked models pretending to act out a random story, just film the band rocking out in a studio. What more do you need?
@uvebeentagged I don't think anyone could cover his voice and do it justice. He is in tune and actually has a great vocal range. He just doesn't over style it like so many others so people think its bad.
@toren737 Actually, it in fact did not. The second top comment was from a year ago. it was there when you wrote your comment and it was there when I wrote my comment. it was there when i first watched this video around a year ago as well
Wow these guys are of the best bands around , they would have 20 # 1 hits by now if the world wasn't so screwed up--hey drummer with the Rush t-shirt , you're better than Rush and most other bands out there
I've listened to every Hold Steady song 1000 times now, and I can officially say this is the best Hold Steady song.
it took me a little while to get past his voice and realize how amazing they are...
Finn's a genius, damn.....
It was 13 years ago...

David F every musician in every city, in every state sing about places they know. Same for citizens....
God I don't know how else to say it. They're just a band that really, reallt matters.
I'm reading On The Road right now, this is rather pleasing. I feel also pleased by the way they look, since they didn't get the contract thanks to a quick judge based on their appearance.
Oh my god, a band that makes me think of, remember, and still love GBV...thank god rock and roll still exists.
... IN THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER!!!!
Love this band, man. My all time fave.
This song grows on you, great tune.
+Elvin Black all their songs have that effect!
I'm eight years behind. Today was the first time I've heard this band. This is pretty great. Take mid 80s Elvis Costello, preserve him and change his accent to deep American midwestern and voilà. Great great stuff.
This is a kind of band that deserves to make it mainstream.
It's disappointing this band is so unpopular. They're really good and have alot of potential.
I've listen to this song multiple times a day for the past 3 weeks. Read into that how you like.
Thank god you have become 50% of the reason why that problem no longer exists. Than you.
I couldn't agree more, love the video no BS and they hold a shot more than 2 seconds
God bless Matt Lech and his wonderful taste in music
Craig Finn is my favorite songwriter of the decade. I listen to Hold Steady all the time. Hopefully, someone in the future will look back and realize what quite a bit of this decade missed out on.
this band is beyond amazing. nuff said.
Hard to get enough of these guys
The best album of the 00s.
Making a play for Rock & Roll heaven, with possessed magic, this song abandon with conviction. Rock & fucking Roll-
and he's tired of all the dehydration
if you get a chance, see em live- The Hold Steady deliver
seen them twice and loved as did everyone else (The Fillmore & Great American Music Hall)
JEFFRO SUNN no such thing as a bad show at the fillmore
+JEFFRO SUNN Saw them at The Hollow in Albany in 2014. Amazing.
Can't wait to see em again. yesssss.
I wish people paid more attention to the music and the lyrics than how the band members look and what they wear.
@amazingrangers21 I'm 13 and I've loved this band for over a year
my best friend said he'd off himself to this song all the time and then he did and now that's why I'm here. Live on, Kyle.
I got Franz's book for Christmas! Yay!
7 people were drunk and exhausted but weren't critically acclaimed and respected
Argh! Why am I so obsessed with this song. I keep hitting replay! Literally stuck between stations?
Lead singer looks like he should be an accountant, rather than a musician. Love the music.
Randy Newman and Elvis Costello's love child. Good genes ;-)
I had him pegged as a broker-dealer
i couldn't dream of him any other way, haha
greatest record ever!
love this band
Sounds like Randy Neuman a bit, vocally. Didn't expect that.
gotta love the drummer's rush t-shirt

And yeah, I'm finally coming 'round to the rest of their stuff. Because why not :D
Saw them in Chico a few months ago, they were great
Great sound !!
2k8 baseball brought me to this.
These guys are pretty legit.
Funny is, I was surfing through vids popping up on the right, the Vaccines 10 million views, Interpol 11 million, the Libertines 8 million, and I clicked this one 272.000 views and they are much better then all those bands combined. Gotta love YT and the taste of the masses.

I heard a little Billy Joel influence in there as well.
Sweet! Just found u guys last night...awesome
Im glad they put this song in Criminal minds as well as Lazy eye on criminal minds. i was watching it and I went "Oh shit, they actually put good songs on shows like these?". Now im hearing again listening. Love the guitar especially on this song.

Agreed.
She was a damn good dancer...
I have this ringtone
why doesn't this have a lot more views?
"Drunk and exhausted" the camera shows Tad.
"but critically acclaimed and respected' the camera shows Franz.
No accident, meethinks...
God bless (this) America
Drummer's got an awesome shirt!
Don't know when this song came out exactly, but the aesthetic of the video has got a distinct 2007-2009 sort of vibe.
proof that you don't have to look like a jonas brother to "make it" in this business...fuckin love these guys!!!
great song
why does this video stop before the end... it's the best part!!
Sal Paradise is always right.
Now that's a music video. No fancy ridiculous artsy set pieces, no pretentious half-naked models pretending to act out a random story, just film the band rocking out in a studio. What more do you need?
What a cool song
@uvebeentagged

wow. they look MUCH better these days.
GOOD, VERY GOOD
mlb2k8! :)
Good stuff...
first time hearing these guys and I love it, but I think a better band name would have been "Bruce Springsteen and the Deviated Septum"
I. love. this. song.
Trevor..I agree to a point. I also think the music is just to smart for today's generation.
Yeah my IQ is too low to enjoy this
awsome
parece que si son los mejores
Stop mentioning stupid pop artists to compare these guys to. It just gives them extra attention. Enjoy the music for what it is!
👏👏👏
the eric wareheim band
@omegagamr umm they look damn good. rush shirts, drivers caps and awesome mustaches. how is that not cool?
@toren737 Actually, it in fact did not. The second top comment was from a year ago. it was there when you wrote your comment and it was there when I wrote my comment. it was there when i first watched this video around a year ago as well
First!
Old video, first comment.
Wow these guys are of the best bands around , they would have 20 # 1 hits by now if the world wasn't so screwed up--hey drummer with the Rush t-shirt , you're better than Rush and most other bands out there
I can't fucking understand why this video have only 59291 views... seriously
Hail John Berryman!
@toren737 They arent about the jonas brothers, they just included it in their sentences
"There are nights when I think that Sal Paradise was right..."
this is the most 2006 video ever
@ryananzaldi Couple others to consider: The Gaslight Anthem, Lostprophets, Back Door Slam, Gov't Mule, Aynsley Lister. But yeah, they're up there.
I miss Franz :c
I think it's a sin the video hasn't reach a million views, at least.
I miss franz
so weres the piano tutorial for this song???
Whatever rigs they are playing through...I'll take 5 scoops and an extra-large..
2nd! Slingerland makes the best drums.
Gonna walk around and drink
Gallagher was such a key member to this band.
why are both of the top rated comments about the jonas brothers??
@YouWantMeYouCantPay thanks. :)
i keep hearing snipets of soul asylum's "black gold". Hey, copy the best!
2006 says in description
@toren737 And actually. The second top rated doesnt even mention the jonas brothers
LOL!
@budihollijr And who is Franz Nicolay?
@amazingrangers21 Yeah, you're the only person under 21 that knows this band. You're an innovative trailblazer.
