      Heck, I mourn the fact that most of you didn’t get to enjoy the growls of the Mark 75 and Mark 78 Tower of Power engines. To me as a child, one of those, especially when backing our little 16 foot Crosby runabout into the river behaved like a living creature, turning to the left and to the right looking this way and that way as it growled backwards into the river. Then she would smoothly and unhesitatingly start forward as dad shifted her seamlessly thru her non-existent (AKA “silent”) neutral. Pure poetry.

    This video was awesome man. Huge 2 stoke fan here. I grew up with OMC in my blood. It's sad that BRP discontinued it's Evinrude line and Merc no longer produces a 2 stroke. I feel the general public got dubed into believing 4 strokes were the answer in the outboard industry.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 года назад +22

      Yeah, I don't know if Evinrude's claims were true or not, but the fact that snowmobile companies have been able to clean up their 2 strokes and continue selling them makes me think it would be possible. I think part of the issue is that high performance boating has just grown far out of reach of "average" people. A normalish person could have afforded a 200hp Merc and 20' high performance boat, but today, nothing in that category is even really produced. All the high performance stuff is focused for gigantic offshore cats for ultra rich people. I don't know if the market led things this way, or boat companies just had more ROI on larger boats so they focued there, but if the emphasis is placed on small/light/go fast (like snowmobiles) then 2 strokes tech is still pretty relevant.

      @@ADDvanced I was patiently waiting for an outboard with power valves. Brp
      finally made one in 2019. But as you know too little too late.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 года назад +4

      I think it'd be possible, but it just wouldn't sell enough to justify developing it.

    • @GT-mn3bx
      @GT-mn3bx 2 года назад +12

      @@ADDvanced The sled industry has already passed 2024 C.A.R.B emissions standards. EFI and 100 % biodegradable synthetic oil. Also, they have proven less emissions than 4 stroke sleds on a HP/cc basis. Meaning a 180 HP 2 stroke is cleaner than a larger 180 HP 4 stroke. Especially the 2 stroke turbos.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 года назад +5

      @@GT-mn3bx Yeah I'm aware.... I just don't think the people with money to purchase brand new boats (skews pretty old if you look at the data) want something fast/fun/exciting, and they don't want to mess with checking oil levels. If boating became more affordable again, aka, something that younger people, who often want something faster/more exciting, then... maybe we'd see a resurrection? Sure would be interesting to mount a modern 2 stroke snowmobile engine on a midsection of an outboard....

    Love this stuff! I grew up in Minnesota. Like many families, we had a weekend lake place . Nothing special. Just a lot we cleared . Mom and dad slept in a 17 ft old camper trailer. That was our cabin. Us kids slept in the tent. But I grew up on that water. I was a baby when we started working on it. My first boat? A 17 ft fiberglass squareback canoe. Paddles it. Then we got a Johnson 4 hp. In 76 we got a johnson6 hp. I mastered driving that thing. If you can drive that, you’re a qualified boat captain. I too had an 8 ft little hydroplane. Dad found it on the road somewhere in his travels. I was 10. Put that 6 horse on it. Did about 21-22 mph. Drove it for years. Had a 16 ft Larson with a MerCruiser 140 hp. Then we got a 84 Glastron/ Carlson CVX 16 115 Evinrude. My favorite boat of all time. I just picked up a 1979 CVX 16 with a 115 Evinrude. Boat motor trailer. $300. Orange with yellow. My favorite! So I’m gonna try and do like you do with your fixer uppers. I just need to redo the interior. Wood is junk. Floor is solid and dry. Transom doesn’t even have and stress cracks in the usual places. But there is a possibility of seepage around the aluminum trim piece. I was gonna start this with a smart ass comment. If you know Hudson Wisconsin. The St. Croix river is right there. Separating our two states. There is a little sandy island towards the Minnesota side. Named Beer Can Island. Yesterday I read an article about a mid 80s 50 ft Bluewater motor yacht. Somebody had abandoned the vessel. It’s need perched on the island for the better part of the summer. Free for you guys to claim and restore ! On lake Minnetonka. Most of the dinner boats are these type of 50 -60 ft Bluewaters. You can Google it and get the story. I was just seeing if I could make ya laugh about it. Thanks for your knowledge. Techniques. Content . Work on putting these together. I like your style! PS lots of Glastron like ours on our lake. So they were about the fastest setup. Until a guy got a 20 ft Hydrostream w/ a 200 black max. Dad F’d up. Didn’t trim it back down after going fast. Hammered the throttle stuffed the transom. It wasn’t 3 weeks old. Kept the Black Max. Put it on his new 17 ft Hydrostream! Still the fastest boat I’ve ever been in. 95 mph

      Good stories man! Just googled the beached motoryacht; lol yeah that thing is stuck GOOD. I wonder what failed on it for it to take on so much water. Not sure how they are getting that out of there; I would think inflating something might lift it?

    Those 2.5L Mercury Racing motors were/are the sickest motors ever made. The sound of a single 2.5 is enough the get the hair on your neck stand up... But a pair of them at 7500rpm must be experienced to comprehend the way the sound of those 2stroke Mercury Racing motors to get your adrenaline flowing. Absolutely awesome.

I don't care tho I just build what I'm into, and I need to build cars, sleds, boats, and now apparently a bus and off grid land. Stay weird!

    Excellent video. I used to have a mercury Bridgeport 225 on an old Astro glass bass boat. I had a 150 decals on the cowling and all my buddies at the bass club used to hate the blast off at the tournament because even in that heavy Astro glass I would still smoke all of them. Of course, it burned about 18 gallons an hour at wide-open throttle and I only had an 18 gallon tank. Fortunately, I will get to wherever I need to go in just a few minutes so I never really ran out of fuel on a tournament. Anyway, I know this is lengthy, but I just appreciate someone else who loves these old motors and if I can ever find a sleek craft tunnel hole I will be getting my hands on it. Or I would settle for Allison also. But I’m a man of small means so whatever I get it’s gonna have to be a fixer-upper. I wish you the best of luck in this boat build and I will be watching with anticipation.

      150 decals on a 225, classic 😂 Yeah, I can't afford an STV or Allison either, but hopefully this channel inspires a few more people to rebuild that really cool looking hull rotting in a yard down their street. Restoring a boat is a lot easier and more affordable than a musclecar, and way more fun.

    I just found/purchased an extremely low hour, as in like almost still in 'brand new' condition..... 1983 Merc 200 hp sitting unused for at least 20+ years at an estate sale ?
    I mean the exterior cowls/decals were covered in dust but when wiped off were pretty minty, and when removed the clam shells I couldn't believe the foams and Engine was almost sparkling with no residues/staining anywhere etc., nada, zilch, donut.
    So I guess I'll be following along with your build because I'm guessing that this one is a 2.4L as well ? and I'd like to repower my old 1980's Astro/Procraft 18FS with this 200 hp and remove the later 135 Merc.
    Were the '83 200's a 2.4L ? Vertical or Horizontal Reeds ? Were they any good to Hotrod a bit ?
    An Update to this....
    I found out this Engine was indeed a first year prop-rated 1983 200hp 5 Petal Horizontal Reed 2.4L example.
    Not wanting to potential ingest a steel reed/damage.... I proceeded to install CC Fibre Reeds and the Rec'd CC Stuffers while I was in there.
    I repowered my 18 ft Astro/Procraft F&S ..... and all I can say now is WOW !

    I grew up on a lake and my dad had the fastest boat on it. People would build special light weight boats to race us with. It was so fun. Me and dad decided to build our own fast boat. And we did from scratch and so many people wanted to buy them we started Hurricane Performance Boats in the 80's. We made some slick boats that were the fastest around. Dad died and I was left with everything but the economy was tanking and I had to work for other people for a while. I never had any advertising, just word of mouth. But I still have a tunnel Hull that I designed and built with a 2.5 liter Drag Mercury and I love that motor and will never sell it. Best motor ever. Mine is a 1997 Mercury 2.5 liter. This was on Wooten Lake in Belfair Wa. Fun times we had...

    F'n Awesome. Yamaha man here, but I'll say it, that Two Five is maybe the baddest mug all time. Grew up hearing these things in the 80's as well. Old man was involved with the S.O.R.A. (Southern Outboard Racing Association). When Japan came to Dallas in very early 80s we became one of the first Yamaha Outboard Dealerships in America. OMC and Mercruiser we're already in our lineup at the dealership. Hydrostreams filled the showroom with brand new Johnsons as new power plants for sale. Yamaha entered the business model and it was a beast. That V6 Special was an incredible machine. 1985 introduced us to the legendary Pro-V 150. Then the black and gold Excel, the V76X, VMAX, Big Block VMAX, OX66 and HPDI injection systems. Blue smoke on the water, mid section exhaust snouts, nosecone gear cases and short shafting outboards. Damn that was a cool era.

    • @ADDvanced

      From what I understand there are benefits/drawbacks to both types, loop charged engines run REAL well at Wide open throttle, and not as well at idle/midrange. I could be wrong tho, I'm learning as I go here.

    • @nerd1000ify
      @nerd1000ify 2 года назад +2

      Broadly speaking loop charging is a much better strategy than crossflow. Mostly because it does a better job of flushing the exhaust out of the cylinder without mixing it with the fresh charge. Loop charged engines also have better combustion chamber geometry (no deflector on the piston) so they can run higher compression ratios.
