    I wish I had this information 30 years ago. I was never able to conceive due to my weight and never diagnosed with PSOD until it was too late. Makes me wonder what could have been. So glad you are helping the young women now.

    I had an endocrinologist that refused to diagnose me with PCOS despite having high testosterone and oestrogen, having ultrasound scan showing cists on my ovaries and irregular menstrual cycle, hirsutism, weight gain and hair loss. He said "Yes you have these symptoms but its not PCOS. Do regular exercise and eat better." He gave me a list of foods that I already was eating and I was exercising.
    That was the final encounter that made me take my health into my own hands. Do your own research. There are many fat idiot doctors out there.

    I'm a huge fan of Dr. Fung's science-based explanations for metabolic diseases. People with big bodies, especially women, get brushed off constantly as just needing to eat less and exercise more. No one ever actually explains how our metabolisms work like this. Fat bias in medicine means we're treated like cows eating too much grass, not like people who just want to understand why we struggle so much to lose weight. Finally, a real answer.

    • @chloetetrault-kearney7491

      I work in metabolic health coaching and I hear this same sentiment expressed so often as patient's experience. It is an actively harmful approach to human beings and their health, ignorant and void of compassion. I really hope this changes soon.

    I have now watched this video twice and I am both in awe and angry. In awe that FINALLY someone made sense of this nightmare I've had for 30+ years and there is a way to fix it and angry at the many, many, many doctors who just scratched their heads and said 'we dunno, here have some more birth control pills.' I will be joining IDM very shortly! Thank you, Dr. Fung!

    Oh Dr Fung where were you when I was diagnosed with PCOS 30 years ago? I was offered an ovarian wedge resection but declined it in the 1990s. That was the best explanation of PCOS that I have ever seen. I love the message that you are getting out to the community instead of pushing drugs like so many other doctors. I remember sitting in the endocrinologist office at the Obesity clinic at a major Australian hospital and there was a poster on the wall behind his head about PCOS. It stated that women with PCOS are 5 times more likely to have a heart attack and 11 times more likely to have a stroke by the time that they are 50 years old. I wished that someone had explained the connection between insulin and PCOS when my insulin level was 221. It is negligent practice.

    It is interesting that Dr. Fung mentioned getting to the 'root cause' of the disease. I actually had a doctor tell me that I was looking for the "cause" and they (the doctors) didn't do that. They saw symptoms and treated that. I lost all respect for the medical community due that that. It is refreshing to hear there are doctors that actually do what I had sought.

      Same experience here. In my early 20s, I got diagnosed with PCOS. I asked my doctor how to prevent infertility, diabetes, and heart disease while I’m in early stage and young. She said those things will happen in 10-20 years, why worry now, deal with it then and prescribed BC pills. Mind boggling and infuriating to think back now.

    I was diagnosed with PCOS in my 60's. And not because I never went to doctors. I had regular gyn checks, saw MD's and was told I'm hairy because I have a Mediterranean heritage. No discussion about weight, hypoglycemia issues I was having, cystic ovaries or anything else. They just didn't know. It's great to know this is better known. Now, I only hope mainstream medicine knows how to help younger women showing up in their clinics and offices and they teach these approaches in medical school and OB/GYN residency programs.

    I have a feeling I have this condition, and it's really frustrating that my doctors never said anything. I brought up some symptoms I had with my skin, and I have hair growing on my chin...so I don't know why they never tired to look deeper. They just told me to use a lightening cream and to watch what I ate because it could lead to diabetes, but they never said why this caused anything I was going through. My sister probably has it too, and the doctors were trying to prescribe medicine to control her hormones. I feel both relieved and upset, relieved that I found the name to what I could be suffering from, and upset that so many doctors never told me anything about this condition. I'll make an effort to change my diet, I have a better understanding of the root cause, so now I know how to help my body work better for me, and ultimately feel better about myself. Either way, I need to lose weight, but at least I know more about why my body is the way it is. Thank you so much for this presentation!!

    I am so delighted with myself; Been on Keto and stable weight for some time, but just finished a 5 day strict water fast and lost 2.2 pounds. Woot! Done plenty of 2 or 3 day fasts, but no weight loss, but I don't know why I procrastinated before trying a longer fast. Now I am going to schedule a 5 day fast once every 6 weeks. I eat one meal a day and I am happy that my weight remains stable with no effort, but it is oh so nice to be able to lose a couple of pounds fasting as I am still overweight.
    Apparently I am not close to diabetic, so I figure I am just very efficient with my bodies fuel. Thank you Dr Fung for the confidence to try longer fasts.

    The information in many videos coming from Dr. Fung and partners lines up so well with the good science-based videos by others about the evils of fructose and dietary glucose.
    It is absolutely crazy how many health issues are associated with so-called insulin resistance, which I think seriously need re-naming. In hindsight, it all makes sense, tying all these disparate doctors and studies together is the challenge. Gut health is right up there too, and while I haven't seen him say it, the carbs Dr Fung recommends (high fibre) also are the ones good for gut health as I understand it. An all-around thumbs up. 👍

    Insulin Resistance is related with around 50-70% of PCOS cases, so what about the part, who are NOT YET Insulin Resistant, but have PCOS with Hyperandrogenism already? So Insulin Resistance cannot always be the main root cause, often it is enhancer or kickstarter of underlying pcos. Interestingly lowering Insulin in non-Insulin Resistant pcos patients lowers Androgens, but not in controls, so low Insulin definitely helps.
    But it is not the main and only root cause.
    There are many different genetic and environmental causes for Hyperandrogenism. Very important one is Enchanced 5-alpha Reductase Activity, which turns Testosterone into most potent Androgen = DHT, which by many different pathways will make you and keep you Androgenic and cause PCOS without having Insulin Resistance (yet).

    I was diagnosed with pcos and was given medication to induce menses. The doctor told me to induce it for every 2 months and told me to loose weight.
    I stated keto and my menses started to come back naturally (about 36th day cycle). Apart from loosing weight, getting my period back was a bonus. I don't have to depend on medication. Once i stopped keto my period started to get delayed from 36th day cycle to 40+th day cycle. I was worried and got back to keto again.
    On the side note, I have a few strands of hair on my chin before keto and it didn't go away after i started keto. I wonder why.... still too much testosterone?

      It's because hairs have two forms: vellus and terminal. All hairs on the body start out vellus, and appear thin and colorless like peach fuzz. Children have these all over. At puberty, many hair follicles morph into their terminal form. On women, it will be the armpit hairs and the pubic hairs, and on men it will be those as well as chest hair, leg hair, arm hair, and facial hair. Terminal hairs are thicker and darker.
      Women with hormonal disruptions like PCOS may have the male pattern of which hairs turn from vellus to terminal, or something like a male-female hybrid pattern.
      Unfortunately, once a hair follicle has switched from vellus to terminal, it can't go back. It's a one-way switch. However, individual follicles can be turned off entirely, by laser hair removal or electrolysis. Sometimes they can just give up from exhaustion too, if the same hair is plucked over and over and over again.

The postpartum were really hard with depression and anxiety. I remembered the doctor saying that I will not be able to become pregnant others said that I need to start early in my 20s.
    The only way that I had been able to lose weight had been lowering my carbs between 70-100 g a day, intermittent fasting 16 hours and going gluten and dairy free. I lost 30 pounds in 4 months.

    What happens if you are not insulin resistant? Or do not have high insulin. My doctor has run all the tests and I am not insulin resistant, pre-diabetic or diabetic, I'm a little overweight but only just over healthy BMI.
    I have slightly elevated testosterone and Dr Fung has indicated that insulin is the issue here. I'm on low carb/no sugar now through choice but my Dr (who specialises in PCOS) has said I was likely born this way.
    So what the hell? I'm more confused now than at the start.
    I have conceived twice with clomid and I do not ovulate naturally, again Dr Fung suggests insulin is the issue. How can this be If all my tests are normal? Beyond frustrating!

    • @rheidarisafa
      @rheidarisafa 3 года назад +5

      All the tests the doctors run look at blood sugar not insulin levels. So maybe you still have high insulin levels , but everything looks great like your blood sugar and your hA1c is normal.

    • @AisforAlondra
      @AisforAlondra 29 дней назад

      @rheidarisafa Exactly. This is what happened with me. Most doctors don't typically check all of these. My A1C and blood glucose had been in normal ranges for years (likely due to intermittent fasting) but my NP through Allara Health recently checked my insulin and it was high.

    I hope uterine fibroids come under the umbrella of too much insulin eventually. Right now doctors are clueless as to what causes it. I've heard estrogen dominance vs progesterone as one cause. There are no diet related practices that have been proven to work, however, there are anecdotal hints suggesting limiting/eliminating meat (and saturated fat), sugar, and coffee, and increasing your intake of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, grains; double your fiber! Basically, a plant based diet to the rescue. However, once you understand how a high carb diet will eventually spiral insulin out of control, it's hard to see plants as the long term answer; especially when a lot of vegans have fertility issues also. But a reduction in carbs will promote weight loss, which will prevent the body from making estrogen in fat cells, rather just in the ovaries.

    • @HR_sailor66
      @HR_sailor66 5 лет назад +7

      So the answer could be less plants, and more meat. Perhabs a pure carnivore diet. Just look at Michaela Petersons experience with her many autoimmune diseases.

    • @akasuzq1970
      @akasuzq1970 5 лет назад +5

      @@HR_sailor66 Yes, makes sense. Carnivore diet, or keto/carnivore diet, would support the body in making healthy hormones from cholesterol, while lowering insulin (and eventually estrogen), at the same time. Better hormonal regulation is a huge benefit for overall health, and might prevent fibroids from growing too big.
      Fibroids are not popularly treated as inflammation caused by something else. Like a lot of diseases, the drastic approach has always been the first option; the solution for fibroids used to be a hysterectomy. The current solution, UFE, is minimally invasive, but does not prevent the fibroids from returning, which may suggest diet is a key driver in their creation.
      I really wish doctors like Jason Fung, and his colleagues, would come along and offer some insight into the prevention, or reversal, of uterine fibroids through diet. I have been doing my own N=1 trial for the last 6 months; about 80% carnivore without counting anything. I had noticeable improvement after 3 months, and significant improvement by the end of month 6. This is without bioidentical hormones. Unfortunately, I am in perimenopause with the usual decline in estrogen, so I can't say for sure diet was the key. I also managed to reduce physical and emotional stress and that may have played an even more important role in lowering my estrogen.

    • @haylslouise8428
      @haylslouise8428 3 года назад +1

      @@akasuzq1970 But low estrogen is not a good thing, it puts you at risk of developing osteoporosis, not to mention, low estrogen is the cause of belly fat in menopause. Low estrogen means irregular periods in younger women, no ovulation. That's not good. Fasting has messed up my estrogen levels and my periods have become lighter and lighter and more close together since doing it :( I agree that intermittent fasting and keto are two of the healthiest things you can do for your body, but there needs to be more studies on women. How do we keep our hormones in balance while fasting? Seems it isn't as simple as just fasting and cutting carbs, there is more to it for us women.

    I am looking for an answer to my question concerning einkorn wheat. My whole life, I've been an athlete...and had pcos. 8 years of infertility and somehow, the Lord blessed us with 2 boys.
    I have spent a lifetime eating well...but not necessarily low carb.
    My question is in regards to fasting and a low carb diet in relation to the ancient grain, einkorn. Studies are now showing that this genitically unmodified wheat variety can actually stave off type 2. It has a chemical make up that is totally opposite of modern wheat. It doesn't set off the bodies inflammation response, it is low glycemic and doesn't spike insulin( steady release), packed with vitamin B's, has 30% more protein than modern wheat, and has a much weaker gluten bond. There are probably more wonderful things about einkorn...but my question is....with doing OMAD and low carb, would einkorn wheat, noting it's obvious superiority over modern wheat, be something that I could add into my diet occasionally and still keep my insulin at a level that allow weight loss?

    • @JYAN2852
      @JYAN2852 4 года назад +4

      I agree with Elma Karic about getting a serum insulin test to see what your fasting insulin levels are. The problem with this is that most doctors will not understand insulin-driven diseases so he/she may not order that test for you. If that is the case you could order a C-Peptide blood test instead. C-peptide bonds with insulin when they are produced in the beta cells then they break apart. It's also cheaper than a serium insulin test, which you can pay out of pocket for if your doctor refuses to order it for you.
