  • The new eruption of Kilauea volcano on Hawaiʻi island nears one-month, and today is showing some changes in the configuration of the active vent at the summit caldera.
    A synthesized voice was utilized in the narration for this story. Video and photos are from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

      Its about 200 feet tall, the lake is now around 1800x2300 feet in size, the floating island is 880x440 feet still. 2018's lava lake was just over half the size the floating island is now. (they're unrelated). Total flow into the lake has consistently been slowly increasing.

      I thought there was something eerie about the voice so I tried to find a face to the audio on the channel.

      @@joshuagilchrist4116 Nope. I have high quality external speakers for my computer because I am a musician. What you are hearing is overlapped sounds of the vents spewing lava. I carefully listened several times for a human breath, and there was none.

      @@jazzcatt Definitely some spots where there was a breath being drawn in, but if it's true that this is a synthetic voice, then I'm sure that would be the easy part to incorporate. I'd think the hard part would be the way words and phrases flow together depending on the syntax of the words. That's usually the parts that tips that part of your brain off that something isn't right. Of course I'm not a linguist by any means.

    Hey, Geologists out there: When its reported that the eastern half is "stagnant" does that mean its slowly solidifying, cooling because its too far away from the vent's molten stream to stay liquid? That the area closer to the vent is actually the molten liquid lava lake?

    • @jazzcatt
      @jazzcatt 3 года назад +1

      When the large floating island became lodged where it is now, it stopped the slow circular flow around the entire lake. The lake is still very much molten under the crust on the stagnant side.

      Great question, I had wondered the same thing!
      @Cat Jefferson - I‘m curious as to how thick the crust is. Do you by chance know? Like, if someone were to walk on it, would they sink down into the lava or is it hard enough to walk on? Not that someone should go walk on it to test it out 😅😅

    • @seriouslyreally5413

      @@jazzcatt
      Thanks for the info. Why is this "stagnant" description important information? so much that it is mentioned each time a news update is released as an apparently important description? How does it impact the molten lake? What keeps it molten once the vents slow or stop erupting lava to the surface? Unless the bottom of the crater is in direct contact with the magma chamber the temperature in the upper cone couldnt possibly keep the rock molten right? Like a blast furnace needing enough heat to keep metals molten in a crucible.

    • @jazzcatt
      @jazzcatt 3 года назад +4

      @@seriouslyreally5413 You need to realize that new lava is being introduced constantly and realize that the lake is over 600 feet deep. If I remember right the last lava lake was there for over 8 years and it never did solidify. It was three months after the last eruption before anyone could walk on the very edges of the lava river, and they still could not walk across it. It would take years for this lava lake to completely solidify just because if the depth and the fact that it is insulated all the way around by a huge mountain.
      I believe they keep mentioning the stagnant side of the lake because it's kind of a 'new' thing.

    I was Blessed to take the trip all the way from New England to the Big Isle 12?...14? yrs ago..Lord time has flown by. We hiked out 2 hours onto the lava field along with so many people. From above we must have looked like ants, like when they travel kinda' single file in opposite directions. when you shut your flash light off you could see the faint glow here and there and only could see the "flow" way up the hill (The entire time it was the closest thing you will ever feel to being in an oven... We were all traveling nearish' the shelf by the ocean vent. We traveled up to the Keck Observatories up the narrow winding road for sunset. But the best time of all was the acclimation area around 9? thousand feet at night you had several astronomers literally vying for your attn. to check out what they had zoomed in on. Equipment of thousands of dollars and they would have a little competition if you will, as to who could show visitors the BEST of the cosmos. I saw Jupiter's rings and the sombrero galaxy among so many other things. Literally seeing fresh acres of earth to a close up of the Cosmos. Leaving the hotel on the beach 80 degrees in shorts no shirt...to fully dressed and cold with blankets atop the Mars like landscape up at the observatory..all the while the trip up you saw shades of green a lush scenery amid jagged black glass vistas. The big Isle is a Geeks dream come true. The people there down to the last shared nothing but the Aloha spirit. I thank you all. As you can see by this post...part of me never left you. Forever Mahalo. :)

    Pardon the elementary question but I'm curious if there is much monitoring of conditions BELOW the surface of the lava lake? Is it still molten and fluid across the full width of the caldera opening? Are there some areas cooling enough to solidify, either at the original lake bottom, or sides? Has flow completely stopped at the North fissure, are there any new hot spots forming under the lake at some other point on the caldera sides? Is there any group attempting to do that kind of measuring, if HVO is not, for whatever reason?
