  • I remember standing at Kilauea five years ago in total awe, witnessing both the beauty and devastation of this magnificent and life-giving volcano.

For a semester when I attended UH Hilo I rented a room in a house right next to the Kapoho fish ponds. I loved to snorkel there and I always thought that someday I would live there again. When the lava took the ponds I cried for days. I still feel tears welling up whenever I think about it. I never felt more at peace than when I was floating in those ponds surrounded by fish and coral. Calling them fish ponds did not do them justice as many of the ponds were basically miniature coral reefs. Even as I type this now I can’t stop the tears.

I agree the ponds in Kapoho was so Heavenly when I snorkled 12 years ago. So sad now it's been taken away from us.😢

It's a very beautiful, magical place. I understand why people stay. That's not just steam that comes out of fissure eight. There is a lot of sulfur outgassing down there that few talk about. There is magma still underneath. It probably will happen again like it did before. So far lava is not returning to Halemaumau. . A lot of earthquake activity around the crater and yet it doesn't. They say it can give little or no notice and can come up somewhere else. All newcomers to the area should know this. Don't think it's a safe place to live or that it will never happen again
