Not a lot of the new generation know, Iloilo port was controlled by the Espinosa family. The last time I was there it was under Iloilo Port Authority.

I have read that the Iloilo River is actually an estuary. An estuary is an extension of the sea near it which penetrates inland and its water is tidal. Many rivers I have seen do not have tidal levels and if they do it would be only at the end of the river where it meets the sea. Moreover, since mangroves are thriving in the river banks here, the river water must have high salinity to consider it having brackish water (50% seawater and 50% freshwater) in order for the mangroves to thrive. I noticed this because the color of the river is very similar to the sea near it. Another thing, most rivers are longer coming from elevated terrain and do not have the same color of the sea - some of them reflect the color of the soil where the river passes. These kind of rivers are almost entirely freshwater which are not suitable for mangroves. Iloilo River which is only 16 km long winding on a flat plain may be the reason why sea water has always encroached inland. Having it rehabilitated successfully though, allows also the restoration of its freshwater marine life and allow the entry of sea marine life, which will thrive in a brackish environment.
