The only possible choices were to sacrifice his clan or to let Uchiha fight against Konoha, which would most certainly result in the other nations attacking the village, which would kill many more people than the victims of the Uchiha clan massacre. In Narutoverse, there are wars, death and revenge everywhere, so if you hate Itachi, you would have to hate every other character.
