The special things about (G)i-dle are not limited to their great talent or massive success(they were called super rookies back in 2018 w awards right from their debut w Latata) but it is also that they are a self composed group meaning that their leader Soyeon composes and writes the vast majority of their song and ALL of their title tracks meanwhile she is also acknowledged as one of the most talented female rappers in the kpop industry. Also half of the members are foreigners 1 from China(Yuqi), 1 from Thailand(Minnie) and 1 from Taiwan(Shuhua). You should def check out more of their songs! I would recommend their Queendom performances tho:)
Don’t forget Minnie and Yuqi also write and compose huhu (even if of course it’s Soyeon who did literally 80% of their discography gehehe)

Starting from the name, it is pronounced like the English word "idle", with "G" being silent. It can also be pronounced as "gee idle". The meaning is rather complex: in original, they are (여자)아이들 (yeoja) aideul ("(female) children"); 아이 ai means child, 들 deul is plural. They always introduced themselves just as 아이들 "aideul"; it is believed the parenthesis part was added so that you can Google them without getting a bunch of kids. It is also very obviously reminiscent of the word 아이돌 aidol (idol). For their English name, they changed the "female" part into "(G)" to stand for "girl", and changed 아이 ai into the English letter "I", with the added meaning: me, an individual. With that, they are a group of individuals that come together to make great things. How individual? Very. Among other amazing things their leader Soyeon (the rapper) has done was to forbid her members from taking vocal lessons, because she believed they would "correct" the individuality out of their voices. So each of them sounds completely different. Soyeon, who conceives, writes, composes and co-produces almost all of their music, uses this to guide her songwriting: unlike most groups who receive a ready-made song and then assign parts to members they think would do best at them, Soyeon writes the song FOR her members, using them as instruments, placing their unique voices into the song where they will be used to the best effect, even going as far as to select the words that she knows members will be able to pronounce well (since half of the group is non-Korean). As their name says, they hope to be children forever, not afraid to have fun and explore, and their fan name Neverland also alludes to it (the land of Peter Pan, where he hoped to never grow up). You can also see the fans refered to as Nevie(s) in English, or Neverver 네버버 in Korean.
The best intro to the group is The Rise of (G)I-DLE by lovinsoojin (probably the best (G)I-DLE fan channel), though it is an hour and a half long. Another good one is An unhelpful guide to (G)I-dle - Updated 2021 by
Adriana Sandoval, and there are many others. In short, Soyeon raps, sings, leads, writes, composes, skates to work and is totally a kid, except when she's scary. :) She is widely regarded as the best female rapper of her generation, and a genius. Miyeon is technically the oldest, but also totally a kid; she was one of five trainees in YG that were supposed to debut together; after many years of delays, she left and joined CUBE (whereas Jennie, who entered YG at about the same time, didn't, and the rest is history). Minnie has a dreamy voice, is Thai, and speaks three languages fluently (Thai, Korean, English) and has basics of two more (Japanese, Mandarin) - basic, but enough to argue with Yuqi in Chinese (the famous "sofa incident"). Yuqi (when not speaking Chinese, she pronounces it in the Korean way, as "oogy" or "woogie") has a surprisingly deep voice that she is way too cute for, and is a master comedienne; also, she's the one with bangs in Hwaa, a different person from Shuhua, who you proclaimed to be your bias in Latata. Shuhua is the group's visual maknae from Taiwan; she has the most trouble with Korean, so for a while she asked Soyeon not to give her many lines; fortunately she got more confidence speaking; she did get that confidence, and is a savage. Finally, Soojin is no longer in the group. It is a sad story of unproven allegations, but a lot of the public jumped on the hate bandwagon and eventually she stepped down (or was made to) to protect the group. She was the mom of the group, the main dancer, the shyest member off-stage and the embodiment of confident and sexy when dancing. Most of the members also have side-gigs: Soyeon and Miyeon participate in K/DA, a virtual group composed of League of Legends characters, Minnie is also an MC and a radio host, Yuqi was on several reality shows, notably Learn Way (which is hilarious), Minnie collaborated with Wengie, Yuqi has several solo songs... Also, Minnie and Yuqi started writing and composing under Soyeon's tutelage, and I think Miyeon might also do it one day.
Latata was their debut song. Their company, CUBE, is pretty good at failing to support their artists. Among them, it seems they have trouble getting their artists songs. For a long time their debut was getting delayed while CUBE was looking for the right song to debut them with. Soyeon got sick of it and just wrote one (or rather, if I am not mistaken, several), made a powerpoint presentation for the execs and even though she was a rookie her vision was so strong that they okayed it. It's a fun debut song, expressing the joy of dance, and casting a love curse on the viewers. Latata is a nonsense word, that Soyeon picked up watching some show or drama and thought it sounded like a spell. Of course the fire on Soyeon's hat was CGI.
Oh My God... As far as I can tell, the MV works on two levels. On one level it is deeply symbolic story of innocence, temptation and fall into depravity. Soojin has been confirmed to be a seductress demon, and the other girls her victims. She is bound by the purple straps, then gets free. Some resist her charm and remain pure, some fight her off but are tarnished in the struggle, some fall for her and fall hard. There's all this Christian imagery, the white of heaven and red of hell, the crosses, the apple, the Latin, the wine/blood, everything in the video works to support this storyline.
On another level, it seems to be a social commentary. The name of the album this song is on is I Trust, and Soyeon has said that it is about staying true to oneself, even under adversity. While the girls have never said so directly outside the lyrics, it seems to paint a picture of lesbian love, particularly in a restrictive, conservative society (such as South Korea). The chorus, in English, uses "she", and even in Korean parts (specifically Soyeon's rap verse) the female pronoun is used (which is not really used in natural Korean, except when you want to be absolutely clear on the gender, like in translations). The height of this storyline is in Soyeon's verse, I feel. People sometimes think that she is in a toxic relationship, and that she is trying to get away in order not to get hurt by the other person. I interpret it differently: what she is afraid of is the pressure of the society to conform. Her cry is basically "why could I not have fallen in love with someone I will not be judged over?" She tries to deny her feelings, but in the end accepts that this is who she is, this is what she feels, and she should trust herself over whatever anyone else thinks. Even if she ends up suffering, love is worth it.
I also think that the title is just trolling Nevies. Because almost everyone ends up saying "Oh my god!" when they see it. And then they'll laugh self-consciously. Just how transparent are we, to Soyeon? :) This MV (along with Lion, which you have not seen yet) are film-making masterpieces, really: pure art.
Hwaa is the last part in a trilogy that started with Hann in 2018, continues with another song ALSO called Hann that is on the same album as Hwaa (I Burn; though this newer Hann sadly does not have an MV), and flows into Hwaa. The thing you need to know about is what "han" is first:

But the same pronunciation also has other meanings as well. The 2018 song is originally named 한(一), where the Chinese character in parentheses gives the intended alternate meaning: "one". The song sings about getting over an ex who hurt you: "I erase your trace in my bruised heart", and the MV styling is a desert. This is why the English translation is "Hann (Alone)". The second Hann, on this album, is titled 한(寒); here, the Chinese character says "cold" (with the English translation "Hann (Alone in Winter)". The lyrics there are about feeling as if your heart is frozen, realising that you were lying to yourself about erasing the ex from the memory, knowing that you still think of them every single day, and you wonder if the winter in your heart will ever turn to spring. Here's where Hwaa comes in, with its multiple meanings, again explicitly stated in Chinese characters: 화(火花). Both characters are pronounced "hwa" in Korean. The first means "fire", but is also used metaphorically for "anger" ("I am angry" is literally translated as "fire is coming out"). The second is "flower". The combination of the two characters ("fire flower") means "spark" in Chinese and Japanese (pronounced "huǒhuā" and "hibana", respectively), though I don't think it's a word used in Korean (but if you replace the Chinese characters with native korean words, you get a word for "fireworks", which was Soyeon's hope for this song's impact). The song uses all of these meanings: wanting to spark up the fires of anger to burn up the leftover resentment ("han"), and warm up the heart so flowers of new love can blossom again. Super cool, super deep, in the way how all the wordplay about "han" and "hwa" was used. And it's not the end either: Soyeon and Minnie said that Moon was postponed to be on this album, because it matches the mood, as you look at the sky and... feel. The rest of the songs are also meaningful in their own place in the album. In Miyeon's words, "We tried to express this album as cold winter, hot fire and beautiful but stinging flowers. It also has the meaning of overcoming the scars of separation and being in full bloom again."
As others have said, all three of these songs were also translated into English. Soyeon said they paid special attention with the British songwriter Phildel to make sure the English version of Hwaa captures the exact same feelings like the original. One of the very few English translations in Kpop I wholeheartedly recommend. English version of Oh My God is much more explicit than the original, though: where she wouldn't officially explain what kind of love she is talking about in the original lyrics, the English lyrics are much less ambiguous. I don't know much of how English Latata was made. Of the three, I vote the English Hwaa the best one.
Still, my number one is Put It Straight (Nightmare version) performance on Queendom. The best stage of anything I have ever seen so far, ever.

Soyeon is my favorite female K-pop rapper…her lyrics are out of this word. So talented.
Something about (G)I-DLE is that they have a unique and different colors of their voices and you can def know every voice of them, also the culture diversity of the members, taiwanese, chinese and thai, half foreigners and half koreans. Soyeon, the leader and main rapper produce, arrange, write and compose the 95% of their discography, also minnie and yuqi did some songs of their albums.
Also their discography are so various of genres, that most of the media call them the gidle genre, they did 27 different genres: Moombahton, synth pop & dark pop, ballad, electropop, electronic, R&B, Soul trap, hip hop, dance pop, deep house, latin pop, trap, chill trap, dream pop, pop, house, disco & retro style, funk, tropical, soundtrack (OST), EDM and pop rock
