Something we noticed is that while, duh, Appa resembles a bison, he also seems to share similarities to Lhasa Apsos. We clued into this when we noticed that our Lhasa Apso looked like Appa. Considering that just about every animal in the Avatar universe is a mix of two or more creatures, and that Lhasa Apsos are believed to be spirit animals by Buddhist monks, I can see where the creators may have drawn inspiration for Appa. Possibly along with his name.
