A lot of people have asked me to put up a video showing how to program the Map of the Problematique effect into the Molten Midi 2, so here it finally is. I have included thorough step-by-step instructions in the annotations, just because it would've been too messy putting them in during video editing.
For the record, the Whammy is set to Octave Up/Down harmony, and the steps that I programmed into the Molten Midi are as follows (where -8 is octave down, 0 is unity, and +8 is octave up): -8, 0, +8, 0, +8, 0, -8, 0, +8, 0, +8, 0, -8, 0, +8, 0.
The Molten Midi needs to have a positive-tip plug powering it. Your standard Boss adapter will not do - it needs to have a polarity reversing jumper like the Godlyke Power-All reverse polarity jumper cable (the red cable you see in my other Molten Midi 2 video). The red cable powering the Molten Midi in this video is the positive-tip cable that came with my Cioks AC-10 power supply.
If you want any pedals custom-built or modded, hit Tim up at www.toyroomguitareffects.com/. He does good quality work.

Has anyone succeeded at this or is it just as ridiculously impossible as it looks.
NOW I undestand WHY that song blew my mind from the first instant I listened for the very first time!!! Thank you!!!
This a great video! it helped me alot...one more thing WHY DOES MATT BELLAMY HAVE TO BE A FREAKING GENIUS!!!!
Here's a friendly advice: DO NOT BUY a molten midi just to get the MotP effect. The sequence changes frequently throughout the song, so you'd need to program it on a computer anyway to get it accurate.
here's a friendly tip: DO NOT BUY any of matt's gear to try and get close to the sounds he makes, because in the end, you don't have his fingers.
haha :D Well, in terms of playability, most guitar parts in Muse songs are fairly easy to mimic imo.
Yeah i think the sound in this is correct, but there is another guitar part played over the top of the first one that changes sequence, thats the difficult one
Actually you can just buy a looper and problem solved
letsgetcarriedaway haha salty butthurt twit! There's a reason you only got 120k views in 6 years 😂 fuck you!
I gave up figuring that intro years ago, thanks for doing this
you really have the intelligence of all the Universe to figure out this song!
keep on rocking, thank you for the video!
we just came out with a version for the whammy 5 - molten midi 5 - it works the same. also, turn the knob a little slower when selecting the interval and it switches more quickly. thanks for the video!!!!
you're a genius...excellent work, thanks
im gonna try to do this tomorrow, thanks for your video !
haha cheers. i was pretty stoked when i finally figured out how to recreate the effect.
Thank you for answer and merry christmas
Awesome tutorial. Thank you!
lol. nice i seriously didnt know what was going on for the most part of it but i was still impressed
Oh my god. This is pure genius.
Wow, perfect. I think Bellamy would be impressed if he saw this setup.
Awesome stuff. I was browsing these Midi controllers and thought, "Hey... that's probably what Matt Bellamy uses there..." and what do you know. Just a thought; If you were to put a compressor after this group of effects, do you think it would give more punch to the other octaves? Given, the effect here sounds great, but some of the octaves come out a bit weak in the sequence.
@AskoyFK what do you mean it won't change the tone? are you able to scroll up/down semitone by semitone with the click wheel? where exactly does it go wrong?
cool video, mate!!! pretty useful, hope will get my hands on whammy soon and will try this.
anyway what's the red button on the whammy?
What distortion pedal do you use?
does the molten midi T do this aswell?
@greendaycovers1000 the whammy isn't a part of matt bellamy's tone, it's just a pitchshifter. if you want bellamy's distorted tone, you can either use a high-gain fuzz or distortion - i used my amp distortion for this demo (kustom 72 coupe combo).
You, my friend, are an absolute genius! Can it work with other digitechs? is it just that one?
so I need that molten midi in order to hear the whammy??
A Whammy V + Molten midi V Or a Whammy IV + Molten midi IVFor «Map of problematic» of Muse ?
trying this with a molten midi 5 and whammy 5 but just doesn't sound right at all tried adding fuzz and hi gain amp but just makes the smallest difference ever
Is there any way to recreate this effect in the fender fuse software?
Does he use the same sort of effect on Big Freeze? at the start there is some weird effect that almost sounds like delay but varies in pitch and frequency?
does this effect works with the digitech whammy 5 + molten midi 5 (I think you are using the previous version)?
is it possible to have multiple loops (and maybe switch through them using one of the buttons?
the whammy you could get for about $150 used, the molten midi 2 maybe $90-100 used. new prices are $199 and $130 respectively. plus the midi cable and power supply for the molten midi which might be an extra $20 all up.
@letsgetcarriedaway Hi! Awesome video, but I have a little prob. Everything went well until the programming of the octaves. It wouldn't change the tone. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, or something I didn't do? Thanks man!
yes, the lead channel on my kustom 72 coupe combo.
@xStinger1987x thanks mate! because my whammy was modded for true bypass, it involved installing a new switch for the true bypass. however, you still need to be able to have access to the original footswitch somehow, so you can recalibrate the whammy when needed. i had tim replace the original footswitch with that red button so it's out of the way, but still easy access when needed.
Yes, possible to create the same with Whammy 5 et Molten Midi 5 ?
does the whammy pedal work with the voodoo lab pedal power.
It does sound different, do you think it could be recreated with these pedals? I just bought a whammy of eBay and am yet to get a molten midi, so Im not 100% sure what they are capable of doing..
Where can you buy a molten midi?
dig it. wish they had midi thru so one could continue the midi chain.
Could we use the software without the pedal to send program to the whammy?
How do u get Matt belays tone just with the whammy pedal with no mods I don't want a map of the.... Tone but just a regular muse tone
I went to listen to videos of the ZVEX Seek Wah and compared it to the song and I guess you're right, filters doesn't cut it,
funny you should say that, i've been wondering the same thing! it sounds like a sequenced pitch shifter, but it's not the same pattern as the map of the problematique sequence.
i have this pedal and can never get the timing right with tap tempo or with the usb interface that's pretty much the big downside because you can't play a long to the song. any tips? seems that you might now how to get the timing right
You = Awesome
are you modified the whammy too?
it's work if whammy still original?
@hondansr91 the true bypass mod removes the whammy's buffer from your guitar signal when it is not engaged. the buffer of the whammy forces a rather unpleasant, digital and trebly quality on your signal.
I've always get that sound with the tremolo effect from the amp, i got a Fender champion 60
will it work with just the digi tech whammy or is the molten midi needed
Do you need that molten midi thing? What does it do?
Is there anyway to get this effect if you're not using MIDI? kind of on a tight budget :/
No I meant can u do this with the midi 5 and the whammy 5 as well ??
do i need the molten midi thing for what?
@corey3110 haven't used my computer, no. the only thing i can think of is make sure it's set to harmony octave up/octave down; make sure it's not just on octave up, or octave down. past that i'm not really sure, sorry.
where can you buy this in the uk??
Does this work with the 5 as well???
As for his Fuzz, if this hasn't been answered yet, he has ZVex Fuzz Factory pedals built in his guitars. I had one but traded it for a Whammy WH-1 straight up.
yeah, work your foot really fast and precisely.
correct.
where can i buy the molten midi 2??
yes it will work with a non-modified whammy.
Can someone please explain to me what is going on here? I'm doing a Viva Voce (Music Speech) and I'm trying to word what exactly is happening here.
It works with a not modified Whammy ?
Do you need that molten midi thing? What doesn
hey managed to get a hold of a molten midi, trying to follow your instructions but the annotations won't show up can you help ??
I’ve lost the annotations as well unfortunately, and I no longer have the pedal, and can’t remember how I did it. However I remember doing everything very slowly and deliberately in the video, so please pay close attention, and read the description as well as the molten midi manual. Maybe even look up some of their old videos.
i followed the instructions at 0:34 but the lights on my whammy wont flash. Please help
An easier way to get a sound similar to the MotP effect is to just play alternating C notes the A and G strings.
@Pescado2020 yeah i have this problem too. i just use the tap tempo to correct the speed when i feel it's getting out of sync. crude, i now, but it's the closest you'll get without rerecording the song yourself to a strict metronome beat. lol.
@letsgetcarriedaway Sorry man, found out of it. I've just started using the Whammy, so i didn't put the output in the "wet-added". Great video, got it working now. Thanks!
Very cool to see you share this. But that is about the clunkiest interface I can imagine for the effect. Ever used Ableton Live? :-/
yeah, but my laptop wouldn't fit on my pedalboard.
yeah ...play octave C in this kinda rhytem:
1222-122-12
yeah i have no doubt that the molten midi 2 can handle it. there are a bunch of other demos on the molten midi, it's pretty straightforward to use.
yes it will work with an original whammy.
Is that a GORM pedalboard?
Has anyone got one for sale ? I am in the UK. And can't find one anywhere. I am looking at building one if can't source the mission is real.
About how much would this effects rig cost?
yes.
Might explain greetings friend with another tutorial handling MIDI 2
is the molten midi necessary ? can you just do this with the wammy ?
CopyAndPasteTheTitlerino Kripperino yes, but your foot will get very tired.
letsgetcarriedaway where can you buy one ?
CopyAndPasteTheTitlerino Kripperino google 'molten voltage'.
I did. They discontinued the pedal
CopyAndPasteTheTitlerino Kripperino their new sequencer should do the same thing.
No, you just need the Digitech Whammy and the Molten Midi 2 :)
i know what you're thinking of - because MotP has more than one sequence. and no, you can't switch between different loops without stopping the loops.
Well, if it were me I'd feel the same!
@420Chema that's what it is.
Alternatively you could use Cubase to control the Whammy via MIDI.
there is no molten midi 4. and neither the 2 nor the 5 are compatible with the dt.
So how does one know what the appropriate speed is?
You are a Godsend.
***** It's actually 125 bpm. The official sheet music for most of the songs on BH&R was abysmally transcribed. If you import MOTP into logic or cubase and sync the tempo that way, you'd see that it is 125bpm.
You need a sustainer pickup but good video
aww, shucks! and the molten midi 2 only works with the whammy 4.
Lol, thanks
no. the software tells the pedal how to talk to the whammy.
no. the molten midi 2 is for the whammy 4. the molten midi 5 is for the whammy 5.
Couldn't you use a seek wah?
You must be Matthew Bellamy.
I don't understand how the whole thing is connected... Could you tell me? Like "guitar -> whammy -> amp..." or whatever hahahaha
guitar - whammy - amp. the molten voltage is connected to the whammy via midi cable and is not in the signal path.
Oh I see, thanks a lot... I've never had this kind of sets, so I couldn't realize where the Molten Midi fitted in the circuit
nope. a wah is eq based. you need a pitch shifter. it might sound a little bit similar, but not nearly enough to be convincing.
Omg why so many steps. or it's just a jike from Molten Midi?
molten voltage don't make one for the dt.
you need the molten midi.
actually doesnt matter, figured it out myself. Whammy wasnt calibrated to OMNI :L silly me
vecio ghea feto?
Little faster , but Good !
