By way of respect, Filipinos call older women “Ate” (older sister) and older men “Kuya” (older brother). But on formal scenarios or when they meet strangers they use the words, sir or ma’am.
@@AForeignerAskingQuestions also, out of courtesy if you want to speak to anyone {male, female} you can use ate=female or kuya=male if you think they are within your age range until such time that he/she will ask you to use their names when you address them..if you think they're older you can say noy-male nang-female. Noy for male is short for Manoy which is actually another term for Kuya and Nang for Manang which is the same for ate. These terms apply to any strangers you want to converse in the streets. like asking for directions or inquiring for something. If you're introduced to older ppl from your friends like their moms and dads., uncles etc. you can call them Tito(insert male name here) or Tita(insert female name here).
If you call someone you know by just their "names" that is not your age or older than you, and your mom/dad hears you, then for sure, mom will slap you right there! 🤣🤣🤣

I feel a safe in Manila as i do in Skandinavia. I am a man so maybe is more safe as a young woman but if you go on publiv places you are safe. People in Phillippines are the nicest people i have ever meet.
There's a difference between fear and respect. Most of the Filipinos are having fear of mistakes when communicating to foreign people. And the first move to say to not offend a foreign and to avoid getting scolded is to say "Ma'am/Sir".

Try to go to Iloilo one of the safest city in Asia! A lot museums, heritage old Spanish buildings, cathedral & very nice churches & of course beaches & foods!

You should visit Davao, ranked second safest city in SE Asia behind Chiang Mai. I have lived there 26 years and never had an issue. It's great for tourists, islands and beaches, mountains, plenty to do. And compared to Luzon a lot cheaper. However if you are a party person then not really the place for you. Typhoon free as well. She should definitely visit Moalboal, my family had a 4 day vacation there last month. Swimming with turtles is my favorite thing and I wasn't disappointed. It's redeveloping so lots of good quality cheapish accommodation popping up. Good night life too.

My wife, Sumitra, manages the place. OMG is, with no exaggeration, the most beautiful restaurant in the country.

During my first time in Europe, particularly in Spain I had a culture shock, when a girl around ten years old call her uncle his name. In Europe, I think its normal to address someone as their name even at work place.

Filipinos are great people, and they treat the foreigners nice and with respect , so we are also expecting the same manner( not being racist at all to the filipino people who are abroad.
As a Pinoy guy when we ask this to a lady and if shes not single we automatically set boundaries. We don't want to be labeled as "creeps". So if she's single we might strike to try to make conversations with tons of confidense and think and say the right English words all at the same time. Me honestly I'm so shy and too scared to say something to such beautiful girl like her. 😮😢😅
Hey native Filipino here. I used to have a real blonde hair as a kid I have cousins here who have real blonde hair too but it's rare to find them honestly because most of them dyed their hair haha.
I can relate to her when I'm walking alone I do feel uncomfortable even as a native Filipino. The young people would even start screaming at me when I walk alone so I stay at home waiting for me to afford a better life. But I still feel the good vibes if I'm in a part where I'm occasionally traveling here in Cebu I feel like I'm seen some sort of a special person. But when it comes to my everyday normal life it gets cranky and people just need love to survive. That's why I'm planning to live elsewhere to gain access to normal life again while I'm living healthy you know.
Hi Julie, visit Manila because there's a lot of a decent place to see like Venice canal in BGC, San Francisco in Eastwood city, Makati business district, Intramuros where you can see a walled city inside a city and more places to explore. Go to Baguio where it is cooler all year round and go to the north part of the country. Stay safe and God bless.
In my province here in Philippines , we prepare to call kuya or ate , but its defend , if im in school maybe maam or sir. Even even my co students as long you respect each other . Its ok .
Hi there Julie, I’m sure you are enjoying your stay in Cebu and if you’re planning to see more of beach resorts go to Boracay which is close to Cebu, rather than go to Palawan first. I think SIQUIJOR is also not very far from Boracay, You might also try to go to BOHOL for SIARGAO, the Chicolate Hills and the TARSIER. In Palawan they have EL NIDO & CORON where you can also see the Undergtound River. Just around the locals in the area they will help you find nice places to stay. In Manila you can visit the Mall of Asia and Manila Ocean Park nearby. I’m from Manila, now living in here in California, USA.

I am working with Danish people and they are one of the most cool headed people. Part of their culture is that they are equal no ma'am or sir they just call everyone via their first name. We speak to higher ups with just their names casually.
Theres a mermaid resort in puerto galera that is owned by a danish..very nice hotel and resort. you mam julie should visit there if you are into diving..
In Manila, you should visit Intramuros, Fort Santiago and Rizal Park. You should go to BGC and Makati as well. They are part of Metro Manila. The most affluent part of Metro Manila.
We call them ma'am or sir as a sign of respect, we also call elderly people who are not blood related as grandpa or grandma, even middle aged people who are not blood related as uncle and aunt, called Big Sister or Big Brothers to people slightly older than us, we also addressed Miss, Mrs or Mister, that's just our normal way of addressing people politely if we don't know them personally or don't know their names or Surnames. If you call someone, "hey, or yo" to call their attention, that is soo rude. Philippines is polite and friendly but don't be rude and disrespectful.
Because we filipino honored and valued the foriegner showing dept respect and appreciation by saying Maam and sir.

What is "older women" to you? Filipinos call "ate" any female that moves as long as she is not old enough to be a grandmother.
They call Tita (Aunt) or Tito (Uncle) for a bit older people and Nanay (mom) or Tatay (dad) for elders.

Hi Julie, visit Manila because there's a lot of a decent place to see like Venice canal in BGC, San Francisco in Eastwood city, Makati business district, Intramuros where you can see a walled city inside a city and more places to explore. Go to Baguio where it is cooler all year round and go to the north part of the country. Stay safe and God bless.

In my province here in Philippines , we prepare to call kuya or ate , but its defend , if im in school maybe maam or sir. Even even my co students as long you respect each other . Its ok .
Hi there Julie, I’m sure you are enjoying your stay in Cebu and if you’re planning to see more of beach resorts go to Boracay which is close to Cebu, rather than go to Palawan first. I think SIQUIJOR is also not very far from Boracay, You might also try to go to BOHOL for SIARGAO, the Chicolate Hills and the TARSIER. In Palawan they have EL NIDO & CORON where you can also see the Undergtound River. Just around the locals in the area they will help you find nice places to stay. In Manila you can visit the Mall of Asia and Manila Ocean Park nearby. I’m from Manila, now living in here in California, USA.
That's part of the culture. Mam and sir are common. Even when they're already in another country, they still call others mam and sir.

I am working with Danish people and they are one of the most cool headed people. Part of their culture is that they are equal no ma'am or sir they just call everyone via their first name. We speak to higher ups with just their names casually.
Theres a mermaid resort in puerto galera that is owned by a danish..very nice hotel and resort. you mam julie should visit there if you are into diving..
In Manila, you should visit Intramuros, Fort Santiago and Rizal Park. You should go to BGC and Makati as well. They are part of Metro Manila. The most affluent part of Metro Manila.

We call them ma'am or sir as a sign of respect, we also call elderly people who are not blood related as grandpa or grandma, even middle aged people who are not blood related as uncle and aunt, called Big Sister or Big Brothers to people slightly older than us, we also addressed Miss, Mrs or Mister, that's just our normal way of addressing people politely if we don't know them personally or don't know their names or Surnames. If you call someone, "hey, or yo" to call their attention, that is soo rude.
Philippines is polite and friendly but don't be rude and disrespectful.
