I've got one. Bought it new in 2003 and it's done about 47,000 miles. Apart from a new clutch a couple of years ago it has only had the odd bulb and new tyres once. It is cheap to run and very reliable. Love it.
I had a Jimny once and it was truly hellish to drive, generally hellish all round come to think of it, but for some strange reason I really liked it!! I traded it for a luxurious and expensive 4X4. That was years ago and I’ve moved on to be able to afford more expensive cars, but out of all the cars I’ve owned I still miss that stupid little Jimny - I even might buy another one.
On this car you should enter the rear seats from the passenger side not the drivers side. As the passenger's seat moves forward when tilted, the drivers seat does not. It's a great little car i have owned one for the last 3 years. Reliable, cheap to maintain and they hold their value. It's true 4x4 car that does not cost a fortune to run. Its a little mountain goat and I love mine.
Seen several reviews on this where the reviewer gets in the drivers side...Suzuki designed it for right hand drive markets, where tend passengers get in from the kerb side (left). The passenger seat tilts and moves forwards when the handle is pulled up, and also has a kick peddle for passenger in the rear to easily exit. Why do reviewers always say its hard to get in the back of, its no worse then any other 3 door.
Indeed, with the passenger seat slid forward you practically just walk in since the 4x4 is higher than a regular car... easier than many 3 door modern hatchbacks! The rear passenger area is actually a surprisingly nice place to be, very airy with those big windows and plenty of space to the sides on the shelves that exist above the rear wheels. The only caveat is rear leg space on the drivers side can be limited unless the driver is short.
jimny is great i have this car more than 5 years. The real reason is to go offroad and fishing. This car is not to drive more than 120 khm in motorway but is the best car and value for money to go offroad and drive in the city.
I’ve had two Suzuki Jimny’s and driven plenty of other 4x4s, but there’s something about a Jimny, they just have character. I bought the Suzuki Vitara expecting it to be as good as the Jimny but with a slightly bigger engine but I was wrong, the Jimny really is in a league of its own.
I bought my missus one (nearly new) and we had it ten years. She absolutely loved it! Best thing in my book was it's incredible reliability:- In the time we had it, we covered 120,000 miles, and when we sold it, it still had the factory fitted clutch and exhaust (although I did re-weld the hangers). The only non-service parts needed were a radiator, a thermostat, and two brake discs. Most reliable and easy to maintain car we have ever had. Does anybody know why you can buy a diesel one in Europe but not the UK?
Had 3 of these over the last 3 years. Solid little 4x4's. They go anywhere and are very capable offroad. Just slap on some good all terrain tyres and you're good to go. Can't wait for the new version, hope it comes with a bit more power and longer gears
You've driven to many cars.. people whom buy a truck... don't care about radio, or getting in or out.. just want reliable.. go anywhere.. Wish We had one here in North America.. !!!
Good honest review by a man who knows what he is talking about. A lot of these so called presenters have no clue and don't know a back axle from a battery!
My 2001 Jimny has been involved in 5 car crashes of varying intensity. It's getting it's 5th repair done on the 8th of January and I have no doubts that it will be still running fine until it's next mandatory inspection in december. :D Tough little SUV. ^^
@@greenfalcon1568 Very good. Unlike the Suzuki Samurai, the Jimny has a nice low center of mass. I used to park mine at a 45 degree angle horizontaly. Just because I could. :D On a rainy day I drifted it on a old cobblestone road and it was awesome. And it was stock. Nothing modded.
@@greenfalcon1568 Depends on the driving conditions. On a very windy day you can feel it pushing the car. It only has a top speed of 140 km/h. It handles alright but you will have to check the wheel alignment after serious off road driving.
Titanic came out in 1997. I think its great that Suzuki keep making the jimny and jeep make the wrangler proper off roaders with ladder chassis and solid front and rear axles.
1998 for us Brits according to google :). We agree, think they all add a little more character to the roads. Would love the Defender to come back too. We know there's a concept of it but still... C'mon Land Rover :')!
The problem the Defender had was that is wasn't updated sooner so it lost its relevance where as jeep update the wrangler so its still current, I hope Suzuki don't fall into the that trap of not updating the Jimny.
I saw several of them in Africa and South America (sometimes as a Maruti ) as a vehicle that normal people can afford and can withstand the roads found outside of the cities in those continents!
Me too. Here in British Columbia SUVs are everywhere even though most never venture off the pavement. I have a Jeep TJ and love it. It is fabulous off road and even better with the roof and doors off, just cruising by the lake. It is way more fun than the E320 I drive most of the time.
Eugen Niedaszkowski ..all optional extras ..and after market..suzuki designed a cheap affordable jeep those options would have priced it out of the market it was designed for. I agree diff lockers would be great
This is the best review I have ever read on the Jimny written by someone with some common sense unlike a lot of these so-called motoring experts who talk a lot of "Bollocks". Well Done.
One of the best vehicles I have owned !! Loved it I just need a second vehicle for long journeys although saying that I have driven from Yorkshire to Stranraer in it and back and good
Phil Lowe Not driven one of these, but I did regularly drive the old Suzuki SJ410 about 30 years ago. Was a bit ropey, was the gardeners car and full of mud but entertaining all the same.
I had one for 3 years......Suzuki please update it!!!! It is both charming and infuriating at the same time - charming off road, infuriating on the open road! Make no mistake, it is utterly rubbish on the highway and it is actually not that fuel efficient! My pipe dream.....slap a high power 1.6 in there and give it a traction control system that uses the brakes to mimic a diff lock for off road...sorted! But that being said...my D-Max replacement is so so sweet! never look back!!
J BouWa it has abs...traction control now available from 2017..does 500km to tank of fuel, depending how you use your right foot, define rubbish on highways..
Jimny are quite car. Two year ago have jimny.. But old one. 2002. So I made sound proofing. 100%. All interior plastic I cove with fabric skin. I put 4 big speakers. And dvd GPS radio. Led interior. After this modes car was amazing. Silent inside. No road noise. But car was old. So I sold. And now I think to buy jimny. Good years. And make luxury interior.
Sorry wrong entry again, passenger seat moves all the way forward for easy access in the back, clue the manual tells you this or do you need it on your mobile to read it.
I live in India. This generation (3rd) was not sold in the Indian market. But the 2nd generation of the Jimny was sold to us under the name "Gypsy". But still we're waiting for the present generation of the Jimny to come to India.
As long as you don't regulary drive on motorways, this is great. If you go over 60 it shudders like an earthquake and there's no solution except changing the front suspension with some complex shock absorbers and anti roll bars
I have a 2nd gen, a 93. Imported to the USA from Japan. Its great off road and around town but terrible on the freeway. At 65 in 5th gear, you're at 5500 revs
We agree on the infotainment system Jamie. Not sure where we would welcome the soft touch materials though, would hate taking the dog out in it and it ripping some nice leather.
Jamie Pickles there is/was an option for a infotainment system but I couldn't get one for my 15 model so mine has a basic DAB radio not like the one in the video
The Suzuki Jimny is what it is. A small car with 4x4 capability which will get you out of a tight spot where a 2 wheel drive car would struggle or fail, such as in deep snow or muddy fields. It is not an all terrain vehicle capable of extreme adventure ‘rallying’ as some have claimed to have tried and then it is dangerous. Well frankly I’m not surprised because if trans continental rallying is your thing then the Jimny is the wrong tool for the job. As I’ve stated before, there’s no such thing as a dangerous car only an inept driver. A safe and informed driver chooses the right vehicle for the journeys they intend to make and then drives thy vehicle to within the parameters in which it was designed to operate. A policeman will tell you when asked how fast a particular car can go ‘it can go as fast as the road and weather conditions will safely allow it to go” anything more is unsafe practice. I wouldn’t choose a Jimny to cross a desert or Siberia in but for the average driver who wants a cheap little car with the added functionality of a 4x4 at the weekend or on the winter roads it’s perfect.
Good one. I own a Suzuki Jimny 1300 JB43 (2006) since a few weeks. Love this little 4x4.. I agree with you. Very small gas tank - I do almost the same miles with a full tank on my GSXR1300R Hayabusa (2000) Gen.1!! Hehe ;-)
Gregory Korvin Congrats! Take care of the front kingpin bearings, they are one of the few weak points in these lovely machines...and yeah, gas tank is really small, i live in the Patagonia and usually need to carry fuel with me because of the distances between cities here...
Gregory Korvin 500 km to a tank of fuel 40lt. Drive it at 100kph and 3k rpm is its best range, mind you i have driven it at all speeds and its consistant for 500 km even with my thule moab roof basket...oh it tends to increse its stabability in cross winds with it on...i though it would kill the mpg surprised it does not.. :)
Gregory Korvin yes king pins are the jimnys weak point.. 7 years of ownership on a 10 year old 65k mile jeep i have had them done twice and its never gone off road.. im not complaining just saying the one thing to watch out for and give the diffs checked and lubed.
It really needs an update. The Ignis' mild hybrid system would make this car just that slight little bit better. Any maybe the steering and gear shifts of a Swift Sport.
i think the older vitara is far better... has IFS, a wider wheelbase and 1.6L carby/injection 4cyl, a 1.8 4cyl, a 2.0L 4cyl, 2.0L V6 AN even a turbo diesel model for certain countries. also modding is rather affordable with things like rear suspension from solid axle commodores providing 2+ inches of lift and falcon alternators providing a boost to power for the additional winch and lights.
Sidekick ftw! Best part of having a sidekick on 30s is its weight lets it float around nice, and it being a 93' I can get it stuck and leave it for a day and not worry about it as much as something 2017 lol
Cheap and scratchy. Well if you run your nails along the interior plastics, yes you may scratch it. Fucking hell, I can scratch some of the trim in my new Audi if I want to, so the point you are trying to make is what exactly? All cars have plastic trim in one form or another on the interior. Wish reviewers would stop making negative comments like this on car videos, it proves nothing except your own personal dislike for so called "cheap" cars just because they are not as premium as some high end models.
The best value 4x4 sold is the lada niva Edit: it isn't designed to be a comfortable ride and and lack of performance because be real if your gonna buy one (I will list what I have done to mine 4.5inch lift Liana 1.8 turbo engine swap F/R winch bar Full under body protection Gear reduction Air lockers Rock sliders Light bars And of course the essential seat heater kit
Car Keys UK I prefer jeeps to be honest, they can be stylish and go offroad at the same time. The range rover can too, but its pricetag is quite so large when compared to a jeep
If you have the budget for a Jeep then that's definitely a good call. We absolutely love just how hardcore the Wrangler is too! I think we would all love a good old Range Rover :')!
Had a Jimny as a hire car in Iceland this January. It was awful. The windscreen would ice up on the inside, a/c and 4x4 doesn't come as standard, the gap to enter the rear seats was absolutely tiny plus it was plastic as fkkk. Yet, somehow, we did affectionately give the car a nickname and it has stuck whenever we see one on the road in the UK; 'shitbox' . The thought still leaves a smile on my face. Ahhh shitbox, you are strangely missed.
Carl Versus Life ..the jeep offers selectable 4wd for conditions as needed.it does really need full time 4wd as your suggesting. My jimny does not have a/c it was an optional extra up to now ? Anyway ac zap 1/3 of engines power and being 1.3 it kills it. Defrosting of front window ? Did you not put dial to full widow demist, once engine warms up windscreen becomes clear and stays clear so you can change dial to windscreen and cabin. You can run the ac on window and have heat to cabin at same time...maybe if you learnt the heater controls first and bullshitted the jeep you would have had a better drive. The gap between front seats was never designed to allow fully grown adults or children of certain size and age to get through. Yes the jeep has lots of plastic why do you think its so reasonable to buy to keep cost down ,!,,, the rear passenger windows will mist up just like many cars as there are no vents to clear them. Mixed with the heat given off by the body and cooler air in rear you get condensation forming. Any way january in iceland what would you be doing with an a/c anyway...clearly to me you know feck all about the jimny and just wanted to knock it...the great thing about things you dont like with any vehicle is the ability to change or up grade.. my jimy is 10 years old, has 65k miles on it. Upgrades stereo to 1100 watt system, has sat nav, phone,cd and dvd and digital tuner for tv to name a few things. It has two light bars totalling 24k lumens of light power a moab thule roof rack oh and an arm rest in between the two seats which makes long journeys a doddle.it has 10 mini cams for cctv recordings around inside and out and is bog standard ...but you know what i would never sell it as it does what i want from it and thats a big smile.
kallasnikov yes available in automatic by advance ordering. Also depends on what importer agents wishes to stock for consumer market and tend to cost more.
I had one as a loan car for a week. The handling was horrible on tarmac roads when cornering into a side street or round about. It felt like the front end was kneeling under on the outside wheel. That and the short wheelbase made the whole car feel unstable when sharp turning, and on a wet road it felt like it would spin out very easily. I was disappointed with it.
I HAVE driven and owned several live axle Toyota and Daihatsu 4x4 over the years (I have a farm) and they all drive differently. The Jimny front end feels too soft, and with the short wheel base it feels like it's tucking under when sharp cornering (round about). Maybe you should try driving one.
I don't know about anyone else but I like the body roll and high up seating position. It means you can see more and I much prefer to move with the body of the car rather than in a lower car where the body stays still and you're moving across the seat round corners.

He is worried about getting in back ..?-- Its not a 100k Range Rover with a million thing that are going to break and go wrong dude ---If you really know cars you know that the jimny is an amazing all round car - talk about the servicing / ability to work on with a couple of spanners / the parts are pennies / that’s what a real car should be- simple and durable- I have had Porsche- Bmw - Audi and currently have a new Amarok alongside my jimny- what do I use every day - what do I enjoy driving the jimny of course - it’s proper old school and shows Japanese car makers ability to think long term and sell a product that you are not going to throw away after xxx years cause it’s going to cost 5 k to fix -

JB43 had a 1400 engine
Why these bloody things aren't for sale in Canada I really don't understand. Suzuki, if you are listening, these things NEED TO BE IN CANADA!
We need this car in America
honestly i want one asap
You went down a slightly muddy track. That’s isn’t off road. My seat Leon went through worse than that when I went to the Brecon Beacons haha.
Is this car fast though?
It really needs an update. The Ignis' mild hybrid system would make this car just that slight little bit better. Any maybe the steering and gear shifts of a Swift Sport.
Hybrid system would probably make emissions better too :)
Are you Scouse or Dutch?
What's the ncap rating???
Shout out Hot Waters Green Room 💪🏼
Now if only we could get them in the States...
i think the older vitara is far better... has IFS, a wider wheelbase and 1.6L carby/injection 4cyl, a 1.8 4cyl, a 2.0L 4cyl, 2.0L V6 AN even a turbo diesel model for certain countries. also modding is rather affordable with things like rear suspension from solid axle commodores providing 2+ inches of lift and falcon alternators providing a boost to power for the additional winch and lights.
Sidekick ftw! Best part of having a sidekick on 30s is its weight lets it float around nice, and it being a 93' I can get it stuck and leave it for a day and not worry about it as much as something 2017 lol
compactt, toff, pricin gotta love that that accent
Cheap and scratchy. Well if you run your nails along the interior plastics, yes you may scratch it. Fucking hell, I can scratch some of the trim in my new Audi if I want to, so the point you are trying to make is what exactly? All cars have plastic trim in one form or another on the interior. Wish reviewers would stop making negative comments like this on car videos, it proves nothing except your own personal dislike for so called "cheap" cars just because they are not as premium as some high end models.
Great off road, twitchy on road. Tax expensive unless early model.
Good to have , better if engine were 1.8 or bigger , I wouldn't mind having one , It looks sporty ...
A Jimny with a 1.8 would be as bad as driving a TVR or Lambo in the wet.
joey jenks the 1.6 vitara engine is direct swap.but insurance and tax goes up
Wish i could get one here in the USA.
You are complaining in your video... what can you expect, that is Suzuki Jimny...it is the cutest 4x4 out there for that price.
The best value 4x4 sold is the lada niva
Edit: it isn't designed to be a comfortable ride and and lack of performance because be real if your gonna buy one (I will list what I have done to mine
4.5inch lift
Liana 1.8 turbo engine swap
F/R winch bar
Full under body protection
Gear reduction
Air lockers
Rock sliders
Light bars
And of course the essential seat heater kit
i actually thought the stereo was installed by someone as soon as i saw it in the car.
Yeah.. So did we when we first saw it to be honest. What do you think of the Jimny as a whole though?
Car Keys UK Its a nice car but i guess not for me as i would do motorway miles in the car mostly
Fair point. That's definitely not what it was made for :')!
That gave us a good laugh here in the office :')!
Carl Versus Life WTF..! 4x4 is standard in every Jimny, they have 2 solid axl ...
dammit...just rented this thing for iceland...haha
Henry Rollins they obviously have no clue what their talking about!
I want one here in Canada for my outdoors adventures. Oh wait, only manual available
kallasnikov no they did do automatic models. Quite a few about in the UK for sale. Manual is the way to go though.
kallasnikov yes available in automatic by advance ordering. Also depends on what importer agents wishes to stock for consumer market and tend to cost more.
Too bad that the 3rd gen never came to india and 2nd was sold until 2016 i hope the forth gen comes to india it can be my first car...
A very good car but only for couple's in my opinion
If only the interior was up to date
Tyre size?
I had one as a loan car for a week. The handling was horrible on tarmac roads when cornering into a side street or round about. It felt like the front end was kneeling under on the outside wheel.
That and the short wheelbase made the whole car feel unstable when sharp turning, and on a wet road it felt like it would spin out very easily.
I was disappointed with it.
We agree it isn't the best car on the road. Think it has it's purpose and fulfils that purpose perfectly.
xynudu what do you expect from a live axle 4x4? Try driving a y61 or older nissan patrol or 80 series landcruiser around a corner lol
Robert Sanders I prefer high up positions and that movement in corners. I find it more relaxing.
Love, fan from India.
Awesome Vehicle.
Reminds me of the old Gypsy.
All I ever wanted
I wish I could understand him where is he from ??
Liverpool! Where else????
Probably for dwarfs - try a diesel Duster 4x4 mate!
Duster would be total crap compared to a jimny good on road off-road leave it to the jimny !.
Yay, Jimny.
very fun to drive
when in india

Its like he is reviewing the car through the glasses of an S class mercedes. Its an utilitarian rugged offroader, it isnt supposed to be comfortable or quick.
There's not much choice in europe for new offroad cars. You either got jimny or land cruiser or... g wagon. Thats it.
Sad but true.
True!
TWBJ jeep
a great car
Lovely
stupid you are suppose to access back seats from passanger side when you recline the seat it slides forward making it easy to get into the back seat
This guy should not be doing car reviews. He is worried about getting in back ..?-- Its not a 100k Range Rover with a million thing that are going to break and go wrong dude ---If you really know cars you know that the jimny is an amazing all round car - talk about the servicing / ability to work on with a couple of spanners / the parts are pennies / that’s what a real car should be- simple and durable- I have had Porsche- Bmw - Audi and currently have a new Amarok alongside my jimny- what do I use every day - what do I enjoy driving the jimny of course - it’s proper old school and shows Japanese car makers ability to think long term and sell a product that you are not going to throw away after xxx years cause it’s going to cost 5 k to fix -
Two years later and this video became obsolete..new one 5th gen came out.
D'uh...Not everyone buys new cars...I've just watched in in 2020...my brother is buying this model.
