  • Ka Ipo Lei Manu
Kendall Kanoa Hawley, alakaʻi of Kuhai Halau O Ke Kukui Malamalama O Ka Hula, dancing a hula solo to the well-known hula song Ka Ipo Lei Manu, sung by Sean Naʻauao on his album Ka Eha Ke Aloha. Hawaiʻi's Queen Kapiʻolani composed this song for her husband, King David Kalākaua when he left for San Francisco for his failing health. He died there in 1891, never having heard this beautiful mele about their love.
Hula dance an art form accompanied by chant (oli) or song (mele). It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. The hula dance dramatizes the words of the oli or mele in a visual dance form.
Hula dance costumes play a role in illustrating the hula instructor's interpretation of the mele. From the color of their attire to the type of adornment worn, each piece of an auana costume symbolizes a piece of the mele auana, such as the color of a significant place or flower. For slow, graceful hula dances, the hula dancers will wear formal clothing such as a muʻumuʻu for women and a sash for men.
