Berklee was and still is my dream university. as an international student, i was shocked when i got my acceptance letter! Unfortunately, it was too expensive for me. EDIT: i am now doing Online Berklee!!!
I'm applying for Berklee Soon ,but I'm sure that going to Berklee is not gonna make things easier. Because you are damn sure that the outcome of you going to berklee will be John Mayer or Charlie Puth . Its just it gets u closer to your dream and its all on you how unique and different you are , Coming for talent Many have Talent but they aren't unique so yeah . But girl your Decision made you happy than duh , you realised Berklee isn't for you ✨
My daughter took the summer week program when she was 15 back in 2017. She called me a few days later. She said... "OMG Dad!, Thank you! I love this school and all the things I'm learning, I even wrote a song with one of the seniors!." Later when she came home we talked about it. I asked her... " so do you think this school will be good for you?" She said "YES!" We planned for it and now it's her first Fall semester at Berklee C/O 2025. She says it's really great. I hope you find your path in music and it all works out the way you would like it to. Thanks for sharing your experience. Have great day!
North Carolina! Woohoo! My 🏡 state! As for Berklee. I've been accepted there, twice, but financing... I'm glad that you were able to find your path. I am hoping that Berklee will be possibility for me some day. Be blessed, and I wish for you the very best of luck with your academic career, and beyond! 💐
I enjoyed your video very much and am happy you are back at the school you like. I believe you made the right decision :) I went to Berklee College of Music for a dual major piano performance and music composition and I was excelling in my classes, straight A's. After 2 years my debt was almost $100,000 so I began getting very scared about the debt. I had to take out "personal' student loans because I maxed out my government loans. I tried to get a Scholarship but was told, "We don't give Scholarships to the "A" student who spends their life away in the practice room. We give Scholarships to the "C" student who is out their doing gigs." I would be $250,000 in debt after I graduated. I was soooooooooooooooo scared of the debt. With a Bachelor's I would never pay that off!-Unless I became famous or something. I made the decision to drop out of Berklee, throw my dreams away of being a great pianist and composer, and took out a 30 year loan for my debt and got a job at bank.:( It was a 2 hour total commute to the bank back and forth each day ( 1 hour each way) and I worked about 50 hours a week so I stopped practicing piano completely. My dreams were shattered! I was so sad that I couldn't practice piano anymore that I got very very sick and almost died of my sickness. Thankfully, a few years later I got a job teaching piano and have been doing so since. And at the same time, I also started taking private piano lessons again myself. I also recently added private Theory and Composition lessons and private Voice lessons and changed Piano Teacher's to one of the best in my city. I am now working towards my dream again. With the guidance of my 3 Teacher's I know I will get there. All 3 of these Teacher's are the best Teacher's I have ever had. I have been thinking of possibly going back to a music school to finish up my degree. I would make my family very proud as I walk across the stage to get the degree. I don't know how it would benefit me though because I am getting everything I need from the 3 teacher's I have. They are so good, that after I complete the degree, I would go right back to them and continue lessons with them. So what is the point of getting the degree? I am thinking in about 5 more years, maybe I will be so good at Composing that I can possibly get a Scholarship to finish up my degree. The degree would be an accomplishment in my life. Something that I was not able to do simply because I couldn't afford it. I wouldn't make more money after the Bachelor's Degree, unless I got a Master's. In the future however, I plan on solely teaching on my own- not for a company so I guess the master's wouldn't make a difference anyways. I wouldn't make any more money per hour so is a degree worth it? Plus, I am learning everything I need to know with the 3 teacher's I have. So I am not sure at this point if I will ever get my degree.
I believe we live in a new world where we could excel in music through more ways than one. I spent many years regretting not going to music school (I studied law instead) but today I realise that, while it’s challenging to juggle practice, learning, composing etc with a full-time corporate job, I should not run away from this juggling. I used to be very prolific and improvised at my piano everyday, then I became depressed and stopped for maybe 7 years (I still composed but only managed very short phrases). But I finally realise that there are so many ways and resources to nurture one’s musicianship, and while a degree in music will always hold a charm or a feeling of credibility, it really isn’t the exclusive avenue of education anymore. We just need to remember that we are not incomplete or an inferior musician without the degree! God bless. I’d love to hear your works
@@Sonibabe555 Thank you. God bless you too. I am now working on a piano course I will publish. I'd love to send you a copy. It won't be complete for a very long time though. I am glad you are still finding time for your music studies. I hope you reach all your goals. Because you have limited time each day it might take you a little longer but you can still reach your goals.
Hey sorry I just saw this!! I think as long as you’re working hard on your music you will be okay. We are lucky enough to be pursuing careers that don’t necessarily require a degree to be successful so I wouldn’t use that as a benchmark of your overall success. Good luck with everything!!!❤️❤️
Getting homesick is true of a lot of out of state college experiences but it wasn’t the reason I left! The school that ended up being a better fit for me just happened to be in my hometown around familiar things. It was a perk but if homesickness was my only con of going to Berklee I would’ve stayed. Don’t let that fear sway you from your aspirations!💞
I went to Berklee for one semester back in 2016. It’s a great school, good atmosphere and people… but you can honestly get the same credits at a muucch cheaper school. And you know the joke at Berklee - if you graduate you failed because you didn’t get picked up by a band 😬
But it is so true, I know people that dropped out to tour with everyone from Beyoncé to Kanye and others that graduated and spent literally millions of their family money and have not made a profit on that investment yet. Music is wild!
Thank you for this, I’ll be a senior in 2 months and Berkeley has been my dream school for the past year but now that I’m researching more I’m seeing more negative things about it and now I’m sort of loosing myself but your video has helped
Great video. I fully respect your decision. I went to Berklee in the late 90's and graduated in 2002 when it was much, much cheaper. I felt very similar as you when moving to Boston. I didn't know a soul in that big town and was very close to calling it quits the first month I was there. Although most musicians can get educated by RUclips, etc., my personal take away from Berklee was the connections I made (which led to my career in music). Good luck at NC State!
My brother was a professional rocknroll drummer in several bands but he could do other genres . His experience is that the rock bands didn’t like BERKLEE musicians . One front man told him that he would take a street Drummer any day over a BERKLEE one . The guy had used one and mumbled some negatives “ And those Berklees are always into some new gimmicky thing and buying this or that . Charlie Watts has had the same drum set for 30 years .” My brother knew a guy who played a Chapman Stick . He was a virtuoso and also a BERKLEE dropout . When my brother asked him why he dropped out , he said “ They steal your ear ! “
I’ve actually heard this before! A lot of Berklee musicians tend to sound the same because their whole mission is to train musicians towards a certain rounded-out level, but that leaves little room to nurture diversity and pioneer new sounds in terms of musical ear. By trying not to miss a single piece of Western music theory, they end up putting people into boxes that are hard to break out of later.
This just randomly popped up on my feed lol, but I wish our paths had crossed at Berklee last year!! I’m a FS and Comp major. :) Glad you are finding your path in life, though, and good luck with your musical journey! :D

You have clearly touched every part of my confusion in this video. Though things definitely would have changed a lot with Berkeley since you made this video, I am gonna work on myself and push through it all. Hope to meet you one day. Thanks. Emmanuel John.
My dream college is to go to berklee and it's very expensive of course so I'm trying to do youtube for I can save up on money and get into college and probably help my friends
I’ve been so set on studying music bc I’ve been playing piano for basically my entire life but my first week in music school, I’ve already felt kinda out of place and like this isn’t what I really wanna pursue. I’m really sad about it bc I love playing the piano but I feel like music school just isn’t the best option for me☹️
Don’t get discouraged! Remember you can simply change directions but still stay on the same path. Music school isn’t the only option to pursuing your passion💘 good luck!!🍀
I am thinking of applying to berklee but like you, I never had vocal lessons or can play guitar, piano or anything like that lol. And your audition process is already making me cry. What should I do??😭😭😭
Try it! You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. When I was auditioning I told myself to think of it as practice for future auditions. It’s stressful but it’s also a part of life. You got this!

hi! if they accept you but don’t have room in the fall semester then you can be accepted for the spring semester, it usually depends on when your audition takes place. They should be super clear about it in the acceptance letter whether or not you got in and for which semester post-audition! good luck💖🌟
I’ve been at berklee for 2 years and it has felt like a scam the entire time. I’m definitely not dropping out because staying in college is my only available alternative to living with my parents, and I don’t wanna go anywhere else because I’d hate college no matter where I went. If you’re reading this, DO NOT GO TO COLLEGE unless you already know for a fact that you need a degree for your desired career.
Hi. Am from Kenya, Africa. was thinking of schooling there but it seems quite expensive but anyway thanks for sharing your experience it has really inspired me
That’s so cool! It’s true, it is very expensive but if you want to focus solely on music than it can be a really great path to work towards. I’m really happy that I went even if it wasn’t the right fit for me.
I am Indian, and I am a very passionate producer, but i made some major mistakes and rolled into cs Engineering in India. Now i wanna drop out and study music pref berklee, what advice would you give?
My advice would be to apply to Berklee, and if you get in/can afford it give it a shot! You’ll always regret not trying if you don’t, and you can still study engineering while pursuing music if it ends up not working out. Just because Berklee wasn’t for me doesn’t mean it might not be the path for you, good luck!✨
hi! I really liked your video! How was the audition process? Did you audition online or in-person? Also, how did you get scholarships if any? I'm auditioning for Berklee in a few months and I'm excited but way nervous! also, I'm glad that you are doing what you feel is best for you! life is so crazy but its important that we follow our gut and our dreams. I really liked your perspective and will definitely be subbing! :)
Thank you so much babe! I auditioned online because I wasn’t within 200 miles of any audition location. Check out Berklee’s financial aid options and also look into some grants and scholarship programs; that’s my best advice. Good luck on your audition! You got this🤍
I liked " u r not a failure if u changed ur mind" + that's a nice decision if u r not comfortable + my dream is goin' to berklee one day insha'allah 🙏 Im still learning English and stuff. ( cuz am Egyptian) + wanna ask about that is berklee got international students there or not?
Your English is very good! Berklee has so many talented international students. I got to meet a lot of cool people from around the world. You should definitely apply!🤍
Thank ya❤️ I will apply but yhe next year cuz am in 2nd year of high school + wanna take a scholarship cuz its so so expensive to me.. I can't afford it!
Sorry I just saw this!!! What’s your instrument? Don’t stress too much about improv they generally like to see potential and room for improvement I think
Look up the top music programs in the country and you’ll find a lot of good universities with nice music programs that aren’t necessarily private schools! That’s where I would start
I think I needed to hear this story bc it’s almost exactly the same as mine (minus the hatred of the Patriots I can’t deny that one I’m a New Englander 😂) I also auditioned late, got in and started spring of 2019 (a semester “late” is what I usually say). I also made no friends and was unhappy my first semester. With Covid everything kind of came to a stop but I’ve been feeling that sort of “stuck” feeling for a while now :(
Aww I’m sorry love. Covid has been really hard to deal with I know what you mean. It’s kinda crazy how similar our experiences are! Just remember you’re never alone🤍
No offense but any of you applying to Berklee just don't it's a waste of time no great artist took Berklee it's in you u don't need to waste money on tution for 4 years for a fucking music school.the quicker you understand this the better .
thanks for voicing your opinion! Honestly the decision to go to music school is up to the musician themselves and for some people they don’t need it, while others do.Take John Mayer, an example of a great artist, he went to Berklee before deciding to leave and follow his dreams. St. Vincent attended Berklee for about three years before she felt the pull to do other things too. Everyone has a different path to follow, and if music school is it I think that’s fantastic.
@@MeeraDahlmann that's not an rational option.if you aren't unique and u just go to music school without considering what the final outcome would be.it will never be what u thought it would.lets take for example ,Micheal lemmo,he went to Berklee for an year and his teacher told him to leave and that's what he did ,he is one of the most unique and unorthodox guitar player I have ever seen and his voice is so different.he started to get a little big in the industry in the starting, and guess what he works as a full time worker at a guitarshop even though he was talented af.so you can't just take music school it will a lotta debt for the rest of your life, and many kids aren't rich so yes
I currently go to North Carolina State University. It is cheaper than Berklee because I have in-state tuition here. NCSU doesn’t have the types of programs that Berklee offers but I’m choosing to pursue music in different ways :)
@@MeeraDahlmann thank you for your answer☺️.i am thinking of applying to Barkley. But i now i am completing my MBBS in final year. Do they have a age restriction in Barkley?
My 18 years old son who has completed Level 10 in Royal Conservatory Music (RCM) in piano and has been playing guitar since the age of nine is majoring in music at Indiana University. He realizes that he will not make a living as a musician, far from it. Instead, he is learning cloud computing, like Amazon Web Service (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. He is already certified in AWS technology and at the age of 18, he is getting paid $100/hour doing cloud migration consulting work, while pursuing his music dream. Best of both world.
@@darkhorseisheartshaker9783 Yes, he is still pursuing his music dream but he is also realistic that music will not be his meal ticket. If it happens, great. If music does not happen, at least he still gets a high paying job and use his music skill to woo the ladies. Work out either way for him.
Just because you change your mind it doesnt make you a failure 🔥🔥

@@MeeraDahlmann thank you so dam much, a life saver and a godess
hehe THANK U💕💕
@@MeeraDahlmann oh, thank you. I will see if i can get an alternative. I will think about it. Many thanks!
@@MeeraDahlmann Thanks!
You got this🤍
@@MeeraDahlmann okay will do! thanks so much girl! :))
Ofc!!🤍
I liked " u r not a failure if u changed ur mind"
+ that's a nice decision if u r not comfortable
+ my dream is goin' to berklee one day insha'allah 🙏
Im still learning English and stuff. ( cuz am Egyptian)
+ wanna ask about that is berklee got international students there or not?
Your English is very good! Berklee has so many talented international students. I got to meet a lot of cool people from around the world. You should definitely apply!🤍
Thank ya❤️
I will apply but yhe next year cuz am in 2nd year of high school + wanna take a scholarship cuz its so so expensive to me.. I can't afford it!
Totally understandable. Money was a big factor in the decision for me because I didn’t get a lot of scholarship money. I believe in you though :)
Thank ya ❤️
I hope u stayin' in place that comfortable to you
And yeah maybe one day make song together! Who knows
Yes haha! Good luck on your musical journey🤍🤍
thanks for your video XD I am planning to go there but I have trouble with improv. Can I ask how great did you play during the improv part?
Sorry I just saw this!!! What’s your instrument? Don’t stress too much about improv they generally like to see potential and room for improvement I think
Could you please suggest me an affordable music college to study Undergraduate in Vocal?
Look up the top music programs in the country and you’ll find a lot of good universities with nice music programs that aren’t necessarily private schools! That’s where I would start
i wanna ask, do they accept IGCSE? and what is the minimum requirement for igcse
I’m not exactly sure what they accept or require but all of that info should be on the web site somewhere! :)
What song is playing in the background?
All songs in my videos are linked in the description!
@@MeeraDahlmann Ok thank you so much !
hii , i auditioned from SA . could I just ask , did you need to give your GPA ?
I can’t remember if they asked for GPA but I remember that they did not ask for test scores like ACT or SAT stuff.
Thank you
Can I ask what song you auditioned with?
I can’t remember which song I went with but I would recommend picking something within your vocal range that also showcases your range :)
Did you get a scholarship at berklee?
I didn’t get any financial aid for the semester I was there but they do have scholarship opportunities!
I think I needed to hear this story bc it’s almost exactly the same as mine (minus the hatred of the Patriots I can’t deny that one I’m a New Englander 😂)
I also auditioned late, got in and started spring of 2019 (a semester “late” is what I usually say).
Meera Palm thank you! ❤️
Ofc!!
I'm not sure about going to Berklee because I'm a huge Yankee fan...
It definitely just depends on each artist’s own unique situation; music school has its pros and cons!
What is ypur current university?is it cheaper than Barkley?
I currently go to North Carolina State University. It is cheaper than Berklee because I have in-state tuition here. NCSU doesn’t have the types of programs that Berklee offers but I’m choosing to pursue music in different ways :)
@@MeeraDahlmann thank you for your answer☺️.i am thinking of applying to Barkley. But i now i am completing my MBBS in final year. Do they have a age restriction in Barkley?
I don’t think they have an age restriction; I met lots of people that already had other degrees that wanted to expand their musical repertoire!
hi meera, r u a nepali?
I’m South Indian🇮🇳 :))
@@MeeraDahlmann oh wow, i am an indian as well, and yes, i edited this again just to say you are so beautiful.
You are so sweet! Thank you🤍
Fun fact: my name is Berklee
My 18 years old son who has completed Level 10 in Royal Conservatory Music (RCM) in piano and has been playing guitar since the age of nine is majoring in music at Indiana University. He realizes that he will not make a living as a musician, far from it. Instead, he is learning cloud computing, like Amazon Web Service (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. He is already certified in AWS technology and at the age of 18, he is getting paid $100/hour doing cloud migration consulting work, while pursuing his music dream. Best of both world.
Well now that doesn't prove that Music don't pay you its just you give up !! congratulations to him but he should still do music as Side thing
@@darkhorseisheartshaker9783 Yes, he is still pursuing his music dream but he is also realistic that music will not be his meal ticket. If it happens, great. If music does not happen, at least he still gets a high paying job and use his music skill to woo the ladies. Work out either way for him.
Glad to know he is both pursuing his passion and getting food on the table👍🏽
Others can do it
ever drop that song? 😂
HAHA I’m workin on it
