@@bodkie Dan Harmon actually found out he had Asperger's while researching for Abed's character. Fans loved the accuracy of the Asperger's representation and he decided to do more research
I think Abed helps Troy grow a lot by encouraging him to embrace his nerdy side more. Just looking at season 1 Troy to season 2 or even late season 1 Troy, and it’s clear to see Abed’s effect Plus Troy gives Abed comfort by being the one who’s most willing to play along and enjoy his antics
@@Karanshu which is a perfect commentary on how a sitcom writing staff really needs to try and pay attention to where the characters themselves want to go instead of just "telling them" early on in an ensemble piece like this, given how Troy was originally intended to be much more of a straight up jock and mostly paired with Pierce.
I love that Jeff and Abed are literally the 2 sides of Dan Harmon(he said in multiple interviews that he started the series writing Jeff as himself in his community collage days, but he's in actuality Abed) This is why Jeff knows every one of Abeds references and truly understands him, because they're the same person at heart
Both of them also were raised having similar traumas and almost the same coping mechanisms. Except that abed used movies and shows to understand people and express his true self but Jeff used them to become someone else, someone that people like and trust, the leading man who is calm during emergencies
this is the ultimate 'deeply personal bond constructed almost entirely of reference humour and witty bickering'. jeff mostly just does this to avoid personal connection or vulnerability by shifting the topic to an 'easy celebrity target' but since abed already relates to the word through these references anyway neither really has to try that hard to understand one another. on multiple occasions jeff expresses that 'real' conversation is when people can ignore all the mushy complicated stuff to straight-forwardly say whatever they want to - almost exactly what abed has always done.
You're right. And it kinda helped me conceptualize a dynamic between a longtime friend and myself. They're polar brothers. Complete opposites on one axis, but sharing the others
23:16 It’s the way Jeff genuinely takes the time to sit down and understand Abed. Most people just go “I don’t understand him” and leave it at that. But when Jeff doesn’t understand something he stops and asks and learns, thus he has one of the deepest bonds with Abed out of anyone. Even when Abed says “please don’t make a special episode about me” Jeff responds “I wouldn’t dream of it”, he talks in the way Abed understands, and communicates in the way Abed is comfortable with
the comments made me realize that they get along so well not just because they were raised the same way (through TV) and handled it differently, but also because jeff imitated the characters he admired and abed wanted to understand those same characters and saw their motivations and actions as very clear. jeff is straightforward enough that he’s not confusing to abed because he imitates what has always been understandable to abed
iirc, Harmon said that when he started writing the show he thought he was writing Jeff as his avatar character but began to realize how much he related to Abed.
@@sanityisrelative He did. These two characters were the most pure author self-inserts on the show. Their relationship has always been the most interesting.
8:57 My favorite exchange between the characters in the whole series. It's so simple but I think it just perfectly encapsulates how much Jeff and Abed care for each other.
@@kaj9869 the exchange is indeed opposite which is especially important because of their opposing values. these two have such a unique relationship thru the whole show. they both feel like the outsiders of the group in a way. i wish jeff apologized more for hitting abed tho :/ thx for this compilation!!!
@@NobodyYouKnow10174 I think Abed respected Jeff more as a friend than Troy, and I think its because of their shared love of cinema. Plus, Jeff is more of an independent thinker than Troy, and far more intelligent. Jeff doesn't need Abed to show him something nerdy because he already enjoys it, even if he won't show it. A good example of this is when Jeff immediately recognizes the Raiders of the Lost Ark miniature in Troy and Abed's apartment. Abed also values his emotional intelligence. Jeff claims several times that he does not feel certain emotions, and Abed also claims to not feel certain ones.

I watched community for the first time after watching mythic quest, and that line caught me so off guard because it was such an accurate description of mythic quest
you can notice it in troy and brittas personalities as well. troy went from moody jock to a lovable misfit, while britta went from a grounded laid back girl to a crazy hippie. all the cast double down the crazy season 2 onwards.

They honestly have one of the most realistic friendships in television history. It's rare that you meet people and immediately become best friends like what happens in so, so many sitcoms. Sure, it does happen, but it's super rare. Now meeting someone who you're forced to spend time with and someone you really don't like all that much, but over time you begin to embrace their quirks and what used to annoy you starts to endear you to them. Those friendships are ones that truly last. My best friend in the world is a guy I met in middle school. I was a center, he was a QB, so we were forced to spend a ton of alone time together over the 7th grade football season because, well, he was my QB so we spent hours a week practicing and a lot of that time was just he and I practicing snaps for different formations. I couldn't stand him at first because he seemed so arrogant and, to be completely honest, he was dating the girl I had a crush on. So I only saw him as my middle school romantic rival. They broke up about halfway through the season and he kinda leaned on me through the break up just out of necessity because he didn't have time to talk to many other people that much during football season. Once he started to really open up to me I started to realize something, he wasn't arrogant, he was insecure and masked that with machismo. By the 8th game of the season we were really becoming close. After the season ended I asked him if he wanted to come to my church and he started to get super involved in our youth group. By Summer he was truly my best friend and that Summer we had a church youth group trip to Colorado State that was a week long and he and I fought hard to be roommates. Two weeks before that we had a school trip to NYC/DC and he and, again, he and I fought hard to room together. By the end of that Summer he was spending like every other night at my house, usually with a few of the other guys too, but sometimes just us. All throughout high school we were inseparable. He went to Baylor and I went to Texas Tech, but we still talked every day since our friend group had a constant group chat. All of us either went to Tech, Baylor, of A&M so we'd all meet up in Dallas at least once a month and just get wrecked for a weekend while going to fraternity parties at TCU, UT Dallas, SMU, or wherever else in the DFW area. Long story short, in 7th grade we started as enemies who were forced to get along. Now, 15 years later, I'm the godfather to his first child and we make an effort to have an all guys vacation at least once every few months (even during the pandemic) and he's still my best friend to this day and that's not changing any time soon.
I think the best thing about this friendship is that nearly every episode, it's just a repeat of their pilot interaction: "I see your value now". They are drastically different people and both quite selfish and egotistical in their own ways, but they have a wealth of emotional range and understand each other at the end of the day.
I love how Dan Harmon’s main characters evolve from smart badasses to hopeless man children , and the sidekick characters evolve from sweet and naive to jaded cynics who are completely done with the main character’s bullcrap
The bit about Abed not wanting to put Jeff's business phone number on the screen of a commercial because it started with 555 and that made it "sound fake" was perfect
Having watched the show through several times now, I have come to think that Abed is the member of the (original) group who Jeff respects most. While he might occasionally roll his eyes at Abed's childish impulses or his sci-fi references, he rarely subjects him to the kind of outright ridicule that he does Britta or Pierce, he listens to him more seriously than he does Shirley, and he doesn't patronise him like he does Troy (and, in a different way, Annie). Part of this is probably affection and a recognition of Abed's genuine qualities. But, of course, Abed is also the only member of the group who ever displaced Jeff as the group's de facto leader: if so motivated, Abed is the most significant threat to his dominance, and both of them know that.
I love this Community compilation format! We need one of "Pierce Hawthorn being the father figure" cause his character was used a ton for the groups character development. Also, "Britta Perry actually being a good therapizer". She really does have her moments. Finally, and this one I really stand behind lol, "Frankie Dart tries to fit in". Frankie is such a dork when she gets out of her tightly wound character just to try to relate with the group, and it's hilarious. Sorry for the long post. I just love the format, and there is so much that you can do with it. Hope to see more of your content.
I really want the Pierce Hawthorne being the father figure of the group (so edible) for _ minutes video because people treat Pierce like he wasn't a great character
I’m also so sad when Jeff gives Abed that second hug when he drops him off at the airport I feel like they understood each other the best of any of the group
I know this is about Jeff and Abed but do you ever notice that Frankie is the best late addition to a TV show ever. Like, the way that ahe contributes to everyone's dynamic but especially Jeff and Abed is amazing. It's like every main stayer in a show is a factor in a system and Frankie sometimes seems like the missing link from throughout.
By a country mile. The only character I can think of off the top of my head that comes close is Sayid in Superstore. (Although technically Tracy in HIMYM counts)
The cynical "I see your value now" followed by a honnest and heart-breaking "that's the nicest thing anyone ever said to me" is extremely strong and promisses a great character dynamic. AND THIS SHOW DELIVERED!
fun fact: these two are the characters that harmon put most of himself into, which is why these two are the most interesting, they have the most depth, and it also makes their relationship especially interesting, knowing that their friendship is harmons relationship with himself
Surprised no one has mentioned that the majority of the video is from the first two seasons, especially season 1. The charm of the early episodes really punch above their belt.
5:47 My favorite line deliveries of the entire series from both Jeff AND Abed happen in not just the same episode, but the very same scene. #1 is Jeff's "The next person who offers me pity or charity will be mentioned, by name, in my suicide note", and my #1 for Abed is his deadpan "Hence AIDS" reply to Pierce
this is like a distilled injection of everything I love about Community. Everyone talks about Troy and Abed. but Jeff and Abed will always have my favorite dynamic
Troy, to me, always merely served as a positive reaction to Abed’s quirks that served as a write-in for the audience in how they felt about Abed’s character (who was arguably the most unique in the show), Jeff was always the true foil to Abed, but his characterization meant denying that part of himself and consistently shutting down Abed when he could. Troy even admits this when he admits in the lava episode that not even he truly ‘got/understood’ Abed. What Troy’s jealous nature may not have ever allowed him to see was that Jeff understood Abed more than anyone, as he was constantly fighting the part of himself that Abed represented.
I love to think that in the first episode, Abed was over doing his personality because it’s the first day of school, and that’s what characters do to introduce their character traits to the audience!
At this point I see Jeff as Abed’s older brother in a way. The kind of brother who sort of brushes him off because he thinks he’s too cool to hang out with him. But really does love him and can’t help but dropping his “cool guy” act whenever they hang out because damnit if that’s not HIS little brother and no one understands either of them the way they understand each other
when senior chang mentioned the Mexican Halloween as a sex position, Abed turned around to look as Jeff for confirmation and Jeff gave it to him. That was really cute, ngl
I love how Jeff and Abed are so alike despite seeming totally different. I love the episode where Jeff moves in and Abed tells Jeff he's a huge nerd. It's so true
Unpopular opinion: i like jeff and abeds relationship more than troy & abed For example when jeff is mad at abed for ruining the surprise party he set up, abed recreates the party and surprises jeff with it to make up for it. But in a similar instance with troy (when abed gets in debt by hiring celebrity impersonators) abed doesn’t understand troys frustration with him and brushes it off instead of feeling for him and doesn’t try and make it up to troy
I would guess that what's a notable difference here in why this may be is that, in the case of the Dinner With Andre episode, he's self-aware enough to realize the obvious fact that he is very much directly at fault for the transgression. The whole thing was specifically about just himself and Jeff, and due to the waiter's untimely mistake, he gets blatantly called out for it in the moment. Plus he gets genuinely surprised (& likely regretful) at how seriously and introspective Jeff wound up taking the conversation. Whereas with the celebrity impersonator party, the overall activity is spread out amongst the entire group, and the detail that "ruins" the evening has nothing whatsoever to do with Abed at all. It was the conclusion of Jeff's own anxiety storyline that episode, him freaking out. Even though, for the bday party he still winds up happy cause he thinks it was somehow planned. So far as far as Abed could basically tell, mostly everyone there still had an okay enough time. Plus strictly speaking, there's not really a clear way to "make it up" to Troy. They were doing the kid's party because they were just fulfilling an obligation that was now complete. There was still a 'party' that never actually happened in the first place, so there was a bit more natural of an avenue for Abed to walk back his actions. He was genuinely worried about losing what he'd had with Jeff in season 2, thus the impetus for the dinner. He didn't really seem to be in that sort of a head space much towards Troy at that point in season 3. But please don't get me wrong, I think I'd agree with you that it could easily be argued that Jeff and Abed's relationship was indeed more deep and meaningful than his with Troy's. Of course, part of what helps really settle the foundation on that for good is what Abed goes thru in losing Troy completely for the last 1.5 seasons. We obviously can't know how things would be if Troy had stuck around.
6:36 "You can do whatever you want, you just have to know what that is." These words are golden in my mind. Also, 9:04 is the moment this show found it's heart.
Thank you for this video!! I know that Troy and Abed's friendship is the heart of the show, but Jeff's and Abed's friendship is so underrated! This is the third time I'm watching the show, and only now have I started appreciating how amazing Jeff actually was. Not only with Abed, but Jeff was a great friend to each member of the study group.

that last moment with role reversal of jeff hanging onto the meta facade and abed calling him on it is so heartbreaking what a great conclusion to this video
And what a great conclusion for the whole series!
Turns out Jeff loved greendale more than anyone else
I love Troy and Abed, but these two help each other grow the most and I would argue are co-lead characters of the show.
I like how they are realistically co-leads, but Jeffs narcissism and Abeds lack of need for attention leads to jeff being the main character (from an audience perspective)
Considering Dan Harmon has seen them both as his own self-inserts to some degree, it makes a lot of sense.
@@bodkie Dan Harmon actually found out he had Asperger's while researching for Abed's character. Fans loved the accuracy of the Asperger's representation and he decided to do more research
I think Abed helps Troy grow a lot by encouraging him to embrace his nerdy side more. Just looking at season 1 Troy to season 2 or even late season 1 Troy, and it’s clear to see Abed’s effect
Plus Troy gives Abed comfort by being the one who’s most willing to play along and enjoy his antics
I love that Jeff and Abed are literally the 2 sides of Dan Harmon(he said in multiple interviews that he started the series writing Jeff as himself in his community collage days, but he's in actuality Abed)
This is why Jeff knows every one of Abeds references and truly understands him, because they're the same person at heart
Both of them also were raised having similar traumas and almost the same coping mechanisms. Except that abed used movies and shows to understand people and express his true self but Jeff used them to become someone else, someone that people like and trust, the leading man who is calm during emergencies
When I think someone who is so charming and good looking that it practically defines his personality, I think Dan Harmon.
I always thought he was writing jeff from harmontown. Like he wrote abed from harmontown
this is the ultimate 'deeply personal bond constructed almost entirely of reference humour and witty bickering'. jeff mostly just does this to avoid personal connection or vulnerability by shifting the topic to an 'easy celebrity target' but since abed already relates to the word through these references anyway neither really has to try that hard to understand one another. on multiple occasions jeff expresses that 'real' conversation is when people can ignore all the mushy complicated stuff to straight-forwardly say whatever they want to - almost exactly what abed has always done.
You're right. And it kinda helped me conceptualize a dynamic between a longtime friend and myself.
They're polar brothers. Complete opposites on one axis, but sharing the others
This is what Dross Whedon wishes his work was composed of
"I can tell life from TV, Jeff" is one of the most impactful scenes ever.
“we have you.”
It'd have to be devastating for Jeff to hear that, since he seemed to pattern his life after many of the cool, likeable leading men he'd seen on TV
I love how they had a bit of a messy friendship at times but they ultimately helped each other grow into better people 🥺
"I know I'm not Batman. You could try not being a jerk." That might be the moment when they finally started to understand each other.
23:16
It’s the way Jeff genuinely takes the time to sit down and understand Abed.
Abed absolutely slathered the "Really?" with sarcasm at 1:07:12 and it's one of Dani's most amazing deliveries of the show.
In that exchange. I think that Abed realises just how mentally unwell Jeff actually is. He realises that in some areas, Jeff has lost forever.
4:56 WHEN ABED LOOKS BACK AT JEFF TO SEE IF THATS TRUE 😭
I didn’t ever catch that!! Thanks for pointing it out, I think it adds a whole other layer to this scene🤣
Troy thinking hes looking at him then realizing hes looking at Jeff 😂
yknow what, feels like these are two aspects of dan harmons personalities loving each other
The only self inserts who work
iirc, Harmon said that when he started writing the show he thought he was writing Jeff as his avatar character but began to realize how much he related to Abed.
agree 1000%
@@sanityisrelative He did. These two characters were the most pure author self-inserts on the show. Their relationship has always been the most interesting.
1:07:08 one of my favorite moments in the show, Abed’s sarcastic “really?” Gets me every time.
Abed, what did we discuss?

Inflection is soooo interesting
I love how Jeff gets the most annoyed by the fourth wall breaks, but is also the second most frequent breaker

I feel this comment in my soul
8:57 My favorite exchange between the characters in the whole series. It's so simple but I think it just perfectly encapsulates how much Jeff and Abed care for each other.
they also did the same dialogue earlier but the exchange was opposite right? or am i imagining things
@@kaj9869 the exchange is indeed opposite which is especially important because of their opposing values. The first time round Jeff calls Abed a nerd and Abed says Jeff is trying to look cool, both digs at each other, yet traits they are proud of. By the end of the episode they understand each other better, and Jeff who likes being cool thinks Abed is cool and Abed who likes being nerdy now knows Jeff can be nerdy too
these two have such a unique relationship thru the whole show. they both feel like the outsiders of the group in a way. i wish jeff apologized more for hitting abed tho :/ thx for this compilation!!!
@@android217 I've only watched the Indiana Jones movies once and I recognized it easily. It's a very iconic scene from a very iconic movie. I get your point and agree with it just that specific example is kind of weak.
@@Chris-ks4sw there is also one when abed destroyed pierce's guitar, jeff immediately know that its a reference from animal house which i dont even what that is.
That Goldblum moment at 20:39 is perfect.
one of my favourite jokes in the whole series
“JEFF. You must return to Annie’s party, she’s feeling unpopular.” Underrated line lol
I like how you included that short clip at 47:34 of Jeff moving Abed outta the way. It’s so subtle but so sweet
Right
What if troy accidentally killed him
Those text exchanges with Britta’s nephew Marcus always gets me. Jeff had the audacity to tell Abed that “they” screwed up when it was all Jeff’s fault lmao!
Then when Abed doesn’t want to help he says “screw you abed” lol
1:16:24 the show Abed describes sounds eerily similar to Mythic Quest, a show Danny Pudi would star in 5 years after this episode aired. The Community wiki suggests it's a reference to the fact that Joel McHale stared in the failed US version of The IT Crowd.
I watched community for the first time after watching mythic quest, and that line caught me so off guard because it was such an accurate description of mythic quest
Now you can watch HarmonQuest and you'll be right in your lane...
Except in this case it's got a dash of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
"it's Wednesday, sometimes I eat in Jeff's car" this caught me taking a drink and now I'm cleaning my window
another thing i like about abed is that we can clearly see in the show that he is getting better with his film skills
Abed’s character in the pilot is so… undecided. So different from literally the entire rest of the series.
they're all really different in the pilot. you can see it in their eyes. it's a little more intense of an episode than the rest of the series.
I mean that’s just most pilots in general
That's what the first day of college is like though lol
I was the same way
Not that much different from other early season 1 episodes, really
you can notice it in troy and brittas personalities as well. troy went from moody jock to a lovable misfit, while britta went from a grounded laid back girl to a crazy hippie. all the cast double down the crazy season 2 onwards.
Man Abeds character dramatically changed for the better after the first few episodes
I like how abed is at first clearly the weirdest one. But with the continuation every character slowly because weird and unhinged. In the end abed is still the weirdest. But the gap is a lot smaller
They learned how to write him after a bit
i like to think it was a consequence of him becoming more comfortable with the group, rather than poor writing, but you’re absolutely correct
"You can do whatever you want, you just have to know what that is"
goddammit
1:06:14 “Campuses across the area have seen a dramatic increase in guerrilla marketing.”
“Why do they need marketing? They’re amazing.” UNDERRATED LINE!!!!!
25:22 very cool to see Abed wearing a shirt of Huey from The Boondocks. He mainly references relatively old things, but it's good to be reminded that he's nerdy about everything.
woahhh never noticed that
They honestly have one of the most realistic friendships in television history.
Sounds like a great friendship Max. I hope it lasts for life.
That's beautiful, Max
"I think you should play the role of my father"
"I don't wanna be your father"
"Great you already know your lines"
I love their friendship but I can’t believe I just watched an hour long video of them lol
It's pretty much a glimpse of every episode so it's a good lil recap lol
The trick is to watch it in multiple parts. Makes it feel less sad.

The way Abed screams when they turn on the light and see Pierce at 50:16 sends me into the stratosphere every time.
"You can do whatever you want. You just have to know what that is."
Abed is a prophet.
Abed Abed Abed Abed...
Aaaabeed
The bit about Abed not wanting to put Jeff's business phone number on the screen of a commercial because it started with 555 and that made it "sound fake" was perfect
It's one of the best lines in the show. It's the neighbours loudly having sex against the 4th wall of the show
45:12 Jeff picking the toppings off his pizza because he doesn't eat carbs always gets me.
It's a shame we get less of them as the show progresses, they really were my favorite duo of the group.
I guess Abed was the only one in the group who was on par with Jeff in terms of raw intelligence and they were both very much aware of that.

Never really thought much about the relationship of Abed and Jeff... until now. Thank you for posting this.
Their relationship was truly the heart of the show while Troy and Abed were the soul of the show
Soul? That's racist
The fact that Abed wakes up in an open drawer never fails to make me laugh.
The cynical "I see your value now" followed by a honnest and heart-breaking "that's the nicest thing anyone ever said to me" is extremely strong and promisses a great character dynamic.
AND THIS SHOW DELIVERED!
I never noticed just how much of a nerd Jeff actually is
He's usually the one who points out what Abed is referencing.
Jeff is just the anti abed, a nerd pretending to be cool whereas a bed is so unapologetically himself(nerdy) it makes him cool.
yeah, it shows lack of insecurity
fun fact: these two are the characters that harmon put most of himself into, which is why these two are the most interesting, they have the most depth, and it also makes their relationship especially interesting, knowing that their friendship is harmons relationship with himself
Thank you. Was waiting for someone to say this.
" We're in a toy comercial! "

Abed takes Jeff’s shirt and suspiciously his dad is wearing one eerily similar the following episode.
Jeff and Abed was my favorite dynamic on the entire show , thank you for this video
underrated duo right here, thanks for this video
8:57 is my favorite interaction between the two of them. it's when Jeff realizes what it felt like to have people actually care about him.
30:40 "shut up winger" probably one of my favorite sayings in this show 😄😄
John Oliver’s delivery really sells it for me
I love to think that in the first episode, Abed was over doing his personality because it’s the first day of school, and that’s what characters do to introduce their character traits to the audience!
oh my god, i love this interpretation
At this point I see Jeff as Abed’s older brother in a way. The kind of brother who sort of brushes him off because he thinks he’s too cool to hang out with him. But really does love him and can’t help but dropping his “cool guy” act whenever they hang out because damnit if that’s not HIS little brother and no one understands either of them the way they understand each other
YESSS!!!!
THIS!!!!!!
And whenever somebody makes fun of Abed, Jeff is one of the first people to step in, because only HE is allowed to bully his younger brother!!!
That double hug at the end gets me every time. This show really did have the best characters and relationships
when senior chang mentioned the Mexican Halloween as a sex position, Abed turned around to look as Jeff for confirmation and Jeff gave it to him. That was really cute, ngl
Danny Glover's reaction was hilarious too. 😎
I love how Jeff and Abed are so alike despite seeming totally different. I love the episode where Jeff moves in and Abed tells Jeff he's a huge nerd. It's so true
Unpopular opinion: i like jeff and abeds relationship more than troy & abed
For example when jeff is mad at abed for ruining the surprise party he set up, abed recreates the party and surprises jeff with it to make up for it.
01:22:08
I think it's simple. Troy and abed are best friends, and Jeff is like their older brother that they look up to
Unpopular opinion: best friendship in the show
6:36 "You can do whatever you want, you just have to know what that is."

Jeff was always most happy when he let down his walls and bought in to Abed’s playfulness.
Thank you for this video!! I know that Troy and Abed's friendship is the heart of the show, but Jeff's and Abed's friendship is so underrated! This is the third time I'm watching the show, and only now have I started appreciating how amazing Jeff actually was. Not only with Abed, but Jeff was a great friend to each member of the study group.

this made a bigger impact on me. i didn't know why on my first watch but now that there's a whole hour of a compilation with them hanging out, i now know why.
26:52 my favorite Jeff & Abed clip ever🤣 gets me everytime
The episode at 22:38 kinda makes me think that jeff and abed are the “main characters” of the show. The others are given different ways how they used abed but really it revolved on them both-they’re both the outsiders, the witnesses to the shenanigans of the whole group. But in their own way lol. Idk the way I’m explaining it doesnt really make sense but yeah I really like their dynamic/friendship. I relate a lot to abed and even a bit with jeff with the whole dad missing in his life.

@@minimooster7258 exactly! Im glad you got what i meant. Before i typed that i had the thought and then when while typing it, I struggled trying to put into words lmao but yeah, jeff is almost as much a nerd about movies as abed
