Actually, someone edited the code in the game and made it safe for the people who play now. So, you can still technically play the game without your ip address getting stolen.
There's a way to make the creator suffer, just like how someone recreated the deep web game sad Satan and put it on gamejolt (it was a free of viruses version) someone out there can literally recreate sonic gather battle, pretty sure the creator will lose his shit about that and will go nuts.

DRM utilizes available microsoft functions like FindWindow as confirmed by SFGHQ. It stopped closing browsers after an update in December and is in a stage of rebuilding for the removal of DRM
They made this decision because when it was first a mod, people already hacked the game, when they did what we know today, they wanted no one to steal or change their product. The way they did this is wrong, but it is sad considering they did work on throught to make the game.

At the end of the day I think it all comes down to delivery, this isn't exactly a new situation, but rather an older, odd story that's worth reminiscing on. Was it bad that people's data was at risk? Absolutely, but this series is comparable to a show, meant to entertain, so I told the story, added my remarks and opinions, and poked a little fun at the creator, and to be honest, I think it's worth being optimistic now that the creator faced the consequences, and we can all look back on a weird and interesting story.

There actually is a way to download earlier versions. You need to get somebody (like me) who has version 1.3 or earlier.

I have a question. Is the game safe if you have the version before the update that has the malicious DRM?
From what I can tell, yes, it's just every update after that. Someone recorded footage of themselves testing the older build and it worked fine.
From what I heard, actual working builds are hard to come by since a lot of people started deleting their copies once this came out since (obviously) nobody wanted to have their data stolen over edited sprites.
