"my character has extended combos and long reaching attacks" "oh yeah well my character can block forever and nullify any attack" "oh yeah well my character is just immune to all projectile attacks" "Oh yeah well my character is invincible" "oh yeah well my character can hack around your invincible character and kill them" "Oh yeah well my character will crash your game" "Oh yeah well my character will crash your computer" ... And it just goes on from there until they can make characters jump out of your monitor and literally kill you.
It's pretty much a hacking competition disguised as a fighting game now. Might as well call it DEFCON: The Game. Wait... That actually is a game. >_>; (Doesn't have anything to do with hacking though.)
That cheapies tier list is some of the most surreal shit I've heard all week. It's like if it was possible for them to program a gun coming out of your computer and shooting the player, they'd do it.
Can't wait for MUGEN developers to take advantage of the inevitable neurolink-PC integration and play a constant loop of Bruh Moment Sound Effect #2 inside the player's head until they die
What? So mugen is in reality a meta fighting game where the real fight is of programmers trying to outsmart each others and inject malware into the opponent. Damn
Well really, that kimd of shit is extremely EXTREMELY rare with MUGEN Most of the cheapie war shit comes from back in the early days of mugen, these days there is more creative effort into making more balance playable characters

This is the exact same phenomenon you see on the VS Battles wiki. You'd think power tiers would reach their limit once a character is literally defined as "omnipotent", but unfortunately we live in a world where comic books and visual novels exist, so a smoothbrain scheme like that is pathetically insufficient. Through sheer determination to prove that Goku could beat up Superman, however, the wiki admins extended the tiering system using concepts from transfinite mathematics, creating progressively higher orders of infinity for their characters to inhabit until apparently reaching a fixed point after 14 layers of diagonalization. Defining a character past this final tier would presumably require logic, or at least semantic language, beyond all human comprehension, thus finally providing an inarguable rationale for purging the thousands of Sans edits who could supposedly kill Lovecraftian elder gods.
One Lyonel Suggs conceived of even more ridiculous peaks of power. Why? Because he got butthurt over being banned from a vsbattle forum and decided to create a setting with the sole purpose of being unbeatable in vs debates.
Out of curiosity, I decided to look at their tier system and see just what constituted as being in 'Tier 0', which paradoxically is actually the _strongest_ tier possible and is the aforementioned 'fixed point', since it literally requires a character being able to manipulate an uncountably infinite number of infinite levels of infinite realities above the next-highest tier, High 1-A, which already did the same thing to the tier below *that* as well, 1-A itself. The wiki itself states that there's no higher (lower?) tier than 0, as there's theoretically an uncountably infinite amount of large cardinals (which are seperate from regular transfinite cardinals, somehow) of ever-increasing levels of infiniteness that it occupies as it's own (yet are also somehow occupied by High 1-A? Not sure _where_ the split along the chain of power even is, as there's tons of defined (and yet-undefined) large cardinals of varying scales of huge), and I don't think they consider Absolute Infinity (Ω) as being existant (as that would mean there's a true final power tier that's completely unsurpassable), so that's basically as far as the scale's physically capable of going anyway. All this to say that they literally are straining the very definition of numbers themselves so they can section away the numerous conceptually-undefeatable SCPs from the rest of the wiki. No, really, 2/3rds of the Tier-0 characters are either SCPs or are in some way related to the SCP Foundation's canon, same with the other 1-A level tiers; the highest tier with a rounded set of characters is Tier 1 (which is seperate from Tier 1-A and High 1-A).

It's funny how everyone ended up getting their hands on the edited/custom sprites and not even use them just to rub it in the fangame creator's face, it suits him well.
It’s kinda funny how he started talking about the sopranos, then switched to the main topic, that being sonic gather battle and how it’s like a creepypasta. THEN it culminated in a discussion about fricken, Ronald McDonald being in a fighting game with cornel sanders and some Tom hanks lookin guy shooting dvds at you! What a trip I must say.
the ronald is just another example of a japanese created characters that have an insanley OP CPU that wont even give you a chance to fight back....theres also dante and vergil and a couple of touhou and vanguard princess characters who are like that as well. theres also the infamous naruto and sasuke-kun who pretty much just cheat by using supers even though their power bar is empty
@@ripleyandweeds1288 haha yeah, the funny thing is about vergil's CPU is that, its soo aggressive that sometimes it acually takes over your control of the character and just starts pulling off his scripted combos

A close runner up to the Gather Battle scandal is the first proper demo of Sonic 2 HD having DRM that even the project leads didn't know about. When they asked the engine guy to remove it he just vanished. Years of work put on ice because nobody thought a guy who makes custom sonic engines wasn't an insane weirdo
"Years of work put on ice because nobody thought a guy who makes custom sonic engines wasn't an insane weirdo" You know who else made custom Sonic engines? The people who ported Sonic 1, 2, and CD and made Mania.
You've missed the final cheapie tier, one that is so secret and forbidden that it's not even on the wiki. Transcendence tier: these characters function much like Dragon-tier characters, but additionally come with spyware that tracks the computer's IP, location and files, in addition to hijacking the camera to acquire a picture of the player. All of this information is sent to the creator of the character, allowing them to track the player's identity and location and kill the player in real life. ... This tier isn't real. I made it up. But it doesn't sound too farfetched, does it? In fact I'm pretty sure that just by writing this I've probably inspired some batshit crazy MUGEN coder to do exactly this. Or maybe it's already been done and I just *think* I made it up. Honestly neither would surprise me at this point
Lazypackmule true. But that’s if you’re doing that all day. I figure most people would be watching it from time to time. But you’re right. I underestimated the power of free time that someone may have
hey there! 1-month late comment here! was binging your vids and heard "mugen cheapie" so i figured i'd drop in and talk about some stuff! now i'd like to think i'm sort of an expert about this whole thing (creator of a so-called supernull named "theorem," a null named "ασιν," and currently a nuke named "Beatrix Repha" if you need a basic portfolio) so don't worry, i'm not just talking out of my ass here. i also know the guy who made the mugen database article (same guy who posted mathrus screens on his now-deleted deviantart page) so there's that too. now i kinda don't like the name "cheapie" personally so i'll just stick to calling them "cheaps" or their proper tier instead, hope this doesn't make things too confusing OTH is an absolute classic cheap, and i was waiting for the moment you talked about OTHK because it's so iconic to the nuke community; always has been and will for the foreseeable future. i think your description about it is good (and i love the sort of build up to the new class of "Omega Tom Hanks Killer characters"), but i'll explain it a bit more here for those who don't fully understand just yet. the ReversalDef mentioned is actually a normal state controller and is used for things like parry throws and the like. all of OTH's movie posters and the exploding pug are affectable by this, so through stuff i'll just call "complex transmutation magic", you can ReversalDef the movie posters to a kill state, create a projectile that turns him into the same poster, ReversalDef him to the same kill state and he just dies. it's surreal to see for the first time, huh? shoutouts to okihaito for crazy catastrophe and sustina for will of hades btw, they make high-quality stuff (mostly winmugen only though) the mugen database article is a *bit* outdated these days, and there's a fair bit of inaccuracies. hell, the nuke part about it not using exploits has always been because null overflow is itself an exploit lol. there honestly doesn't need to be so many tiers either, but that's the guy who made it for you. japan has it divided into "crazy/狂" (Dark Donald, Rare Akuma), "god/神" (Will of Prison Flame and other nukes), and... "isolation/隔離" (Crazy Catastrophe and other null+ characters) tiers, but that's it. at least it's funny to think about 16 fucking levels of MUGEN cheapness though. again in the japanese side of the community, we're actually beginning to see the exploits used by (super)null and void tiers of the past be used in things like more standard cheaps and nukes. it's mostly used for gathering info, breaking the limits of what you can do further, or defense versus other, higher-tier cheaps (SN defense is the most prominent example). with the advent of "infiltrative direct death," there are now even ways to use the opponent's own %n code against them. by the way, the same guy who made this article hypothesized many subtiers of dragon tier (LAN, MAN, WAN, and my personal ludicrous favorite, "SPACE DRAGON," each detailing the reach of their destructive power) and a fucking *17th* tier, "Nebula," only possible with alien technology. i wish i was joking. at this point we don't even know if Mathrus was actually as dangerous as the guy said it was, of if the guy literally just made it up to sound cool. if there's anything you want to know, like more of the story i heard about Mathrus instead of me just trying to fit a snippet in this youtube comment, i'd be happy to answer! it's always enjoyable to see new people learn about this side of the community the mini-donald rant and you describing at how "majestic" the mugen database's tier list were hilarious by the way lmao
Thanks for elaborating! I'd be interested to hear more about Mathrus, about characters that were maybe created with malicious intent and why they were dangerous, about stories or anecdotes of unexpected strangeness that you've experienced or heard of, and more about the upper realms of these tiers and the alien technology stuff, please:)
Honestly, I'd reason that the list in the MUGEN Database article's mostly-accurate up to Letter or Omed-tier, and past that it starts getting stupid. I mean really, how many times have people created malware-infested MUGEN characters to necessitate 5 tiers to describe their methods alone, not including the other, weaker ones? Hell, you probably could condense the tiers past Null (Uses in-game engine exploits to win, like contained buffer overflows or state manipulation), into just Supernull (Manipulates the game's process and code directly to win), Hypernull (Uses external executables or programs included with the character to win), and Ultranull (Breaks free from the game engine entirely and runs it's own remote code seprerately, often malicious beyond just winning the round), and that'd be perfectly explanitory as to what the characters really do...

That ending honestly was kinda sad, it’s like he’s been alone for ages and he only realised that after the time over in sonic 1, so he turns off the game to ponder, then he picks up the phone and considers calling... *someone* but he just puts it back and goes back to thinking, *really powerful stuff In all honesty* (That chinematrography was amazing too, honestly if cybershell ever decided to make a movie I’d watch it because of how well he did the camera angles here)
Mckinnell Family Trio Plot twits: The channel known as cybershell was just a tool to tell an incredible story. He left to go to film school and is back to tell the most impactful, and gut wrenching story known to man kind.

I always wanted to see a big deep dive into Mugen cheapies. They're VERY interesting and I've been interested for years now, although it's a bit hard to search. This isn't a deep dive, but it's still great to see.
I love how this video derails into talking about Mugen. It's a treasure I feel is being lost to time as the internet gets older. Thanks for shedding some light on it 👍
Ever since I first learned about cheapies in a 4chan thread I have always wanted to see somebody make a video about them. Baron Dimache heavily disturbed me when I first saw a video of it. As for Mathrus, I vaguely remember hearing some story about the character completely messing up an entire College dorm. Broke the wifi or something.
>Doesn’t want people to steal his sprite edits >Force closes browser for words like *_”cheat”_* Am I the only one who sees the problem with this guy’s logic? Edit: I dunno if people are just joking in the replies, buuuut for anyone who doesn’t understand what I mean, the creator’s reason (graphics/sprite “edits”) doesn’t match with the causes (“cheat”)
The M.U.G.E.N. Cheapie wars were a battle to go far beyond the absolute limit of overpowered cheater characters, and then figure out how to go even further than that. I was half expecting a tier of Cheapie that forcibly takes you, the player, to the astral plane, killing you instantly.
Pokemon at its surface isn't especially creepy, which is what makes the haunted house/graveyard tower level stand out a little. But then a little beneath the surface you realize the ghosts of dead monsters (and dead humans) can be trained and commanded in battle, fed, petted and pampered as pets, there are creepy balloon and hypnotist monsters that abduct children, and _lots_ of huge, durable apex predators.
I've been recoding Mugen battles for almost a decade, and yet I never knew all of these in depth layers of coding all these characters have. This was so awesome to learn about! Thanks, dude.
I would assume "Dragon Tier' characters are rare simply due to the difficulty of developing one. It either formats the hard disk (this is possible if it sits in system RAM to do so), or just fucks up your file system so you get an bootloader error when the BIOS trys to read your hard drive. The only thing you could do beyond this is destroying the actual system hardware. This can already be done rather easily by wiping a systems BIOS to blank at which point it becomes impossible to reflash it without de soldering the BIOS chip and reflashing it with a chip flasher. Which I doubt any exist for modern BIOS chips. But further destruction could easily be done by directly attempting to cause electrical faults via overclocking. Draw too much on a power supply and you might just fry the entire system. Or blow the breaker. At the point of blowing a fuse in a breaker you're actually getting to the point of causing an electrical fire and potentially actually being able to kill with it if the person doesn't run their system through a UPS already which would, hopefully, take the shock and just blow the internal fuse in it instead.
"Huh, Mugen sounds pretty fun. I've heard of it before actually, maybe it's time to play." "That "post or no downloads" shit is gay, I'm not gonna play."
i thought it was about the prolonging struggle of not having anything to do and trying to replace that loneliness with video games, begging that it will bring you the joy it did when you were a kid.
2 blunts deep and i just remembered this video was supposed to be about Creepypasta games but here I am, listening to an explanation of how many Ronald McDonald characters there are in Mugen
So from what I understand is that either Cybershell or even ourselves are actually in a coma and these videos are just part of a dream to distract us from crippling loneliness
Hey, I see you've talked about MUGEN. I really think MUGEN's a really great thing that came to be, and the chaos that occurs within the game does make it rather unplayable at times, due to how different characters can be from one another even for people who are into fighter games, sometimes one character can be too overpowered, or underpowered, etc. I agree on this myself, too. It's still always nice fun to poke around playing with characters whether you win or lose. As for the cheapies, I have to personally say that the majority of exploits that are depicted online are winmugen exploits, winmugen being an older version of MUGEN itself. Generally I see people using MUGEN 1.0, which I consider to be what everyone's using these days. I can agree that there's some scary stuff here and there with various cheapies, like preventing you from using task manager, or deleting the opponent's files off your HDD, etc. winmugen was really exploited to hell and back, I'll say that; But you should know, even MUGEN 1.1b, which was supposedly the 1.1 beta version, has winmugen-esque exploits; One I'm very sure of is where you can actually run another executable of MUGEN, which works with the beta version too, and makes killing even the most sturdy in-game character piece of cake (since the cheapie is essentially using out-of-game methods to do this). I'm afraid that even 1.0 may have these exploits, someone out there somewhere has probably already exploited the engine and made yet another cheapie who can do similar things like the above. So all I'm saying here is, regardless of MUGEN version, there is most likely someone out there who has already exploited the engine. Though the weird thing is that it really seems like Elecbyte, the guys behind MUGEN just.. stopped working on MUGEN. I am not sure, but I've heard rumors that one of the reasons might've been the exploits of the engines. I am not betting this 100%, there are probably other important reasons. But I'm saying this because there's something else I wanted to say, but who knows--someone else may already have said this in the comment section; There is actually an open source version of MUGEN called IKEMEN, which works the same way that MUGEN does, and it's completely based on MUGEN; It's even backwards compatible, so you don't have to do any editing on older winmugen characters to work. The best part is that this actually completely annihilates all the exploits the MUGEN engines previously had, meaning that if you put any very high level cheapies into IKEMEN, they'll work like normal characters and not like cheapies, because their exploits will not work at all. Some cheapies may still work and surprisingly not even crash the game, but they're not the very high ones who delete your files or stop explorer.exe, etc; you get the idea. You can even edit how the engine works, and create 'full games' with a selection of characters and stages which can also solve the 'chaos' that MUGEN usually causes when you try to play problem, because a 'full game' essentially means that the characters of the roster are all part of a 'system', usually people balance how characters play OR create characters to comply with a system they may have in mind. This project is constantly having new features added into it, and you know what's even better? There's netplay! That's about all I had, some things I said may be probably wrong--and sorry about that. Also sorry if someone talked about the things I said as well. I'm in a hurry. :q
Oh god, MUGEN Archive is both a blessing and a massive inconvenience. I hate how much the admins force regular users to use the forums, instead of simply hosting a repository of characters. It's a great site that hosts a bunch of content, but the way they set up obstacles in order to simply use the main function of the site is infuriating. I'm glad that a youtuber with a bigger than usual audience atleast mentioned the issue with that site, no matter how brief.
I'm like super late to this, but Mugen archive is a supremely shitty website. They basically hold characters hostage there and encourage you to pay to use the site, among other scummy things such as admins being complete fuckin dickheads. Making money off of other people's work is a really asinine thing to do.
That ending was absolutely genius, surprisingly beautiful, and sad. Perfect misdirection. I hoped it was going in that direction, but wasn't prepared for the tone.
There's so much to unpack here, it's kind of difficult in a short comment. From Gather Battle to MUGEN And yet, you weaved it all together as seamlessly as steps in a dance. I thought Psycho Shredder was the peak of this. But I was clearly wrong, on that note. I could just correct you about Crazy Catastrophe's base character, but _technically_ you're still correct Because as according to what I remember of KoF lore, Krizalid is connected to Orochi in some way. And it's a pretty funny edit in a sense, it's what an SNK boss looks like to outsiders
For context about the whole mugen stuff (yeah i know i'm 3 years away but still): -Characters that destroy your pc ARE actually doable and have been done before. It essentially works by abusing flaws on mugen (most often what's called winmugen) to achieve RCE, at which point it's essentially game over. -As far as i know Mathrus is not real at all. What it can do is indeed possible trough exploits, but the character itself doesn't exist and never existed

Through sheer determination to prove that Goku could beat up Superman, however, the wiki admins extended the tiering system using concepts from transfinite mathematics, creating progressively higher orders of infinity for their characters to inhabit until apparently reaching a fixed point after 14 layers of diagonalization. Defining a character past this final tier would presumably require logic, or at least semantic language, beyond all human comprehension, thus finally providing an inarguable rationale for purging the thousands of Sans edits who could supposedly kill Lovecraftian elder gods.
yeah sounds about right
Yep loved talking with those vs battle people
The Antiprincple just says yes and no to everything

Or maybe it's already been done and I just *think* I made it up. hey there! 1-month late comment here! was binging your vids and heard "mugen cheapie" so i figured i'd drop in and talk about some stuff! now i'd like to think i'm sort of an expert about this whole thing (creator of a so-called supernull named "theorem," a null named "ασιν," and currently a nuke named "Beatrix Repha" if you need a basic portfolio) so don't worry, i'm not just talking out of my ass here. i also know the guy who made the mugen database article (same guy who posted mathrus screens on his now-deleted deviantart page) so there's that too.
now i kinda don't like the name "cheapie" personally so i'll just stick to calling them "cheaps" or their proper tier instead, hope this doesn't make things too confusing
OTH is an absolute classic cheap, and i was waiting for the moment you talked about OTHK because it's so iconic to the nuke community; always has been and will for the foreseeable future. i think your description about it is good (and i love the sort of build up to the new class of "Omega Tom Hanks Killer characters"), but i'll explain it a bit more here for those who don't fully understand just yet.
the ReversalDef mentioned is actually a normal state controller and is used for things like parry throws and the like. all of OTH's movie posters and the exploding pug are affectable by this, so through stuff i'll just call "complex transmutation magic", you can ReversalDef the movie posters to a kill state, create a projectile that turns him into the same poster, ReversalDef him to the same kill state and he just dies. it's surreal to see for the first time, huh?
shoutouts to okihaito for crazy catastrophe and sustina for will of hades btw, they make high-quality stuff (mostly winmugen only though)
the mugen database article is a *bit* outdated these days, and there's a fair bit of inaccuracies. hell, the nuke part about it not using exploits has always been because null overflow is itself an exploit lol. there honestly doesn't need to be so many tiers either, but that's the guy who made it for you. japan has it divided into "crazy/狂" (Dark Donald, Rare Akuma), "god/神" (Will of Prison Flame and other nukes), and... "isolation/隔離" (Crazy Catastrophe and other null+ characters) tiers, but that's it. at least it's funny to think about 16 fucking levels of MUGEN cheapness though.
again in the japanese side of the community, we're actually beginning to see the exploits used by (super)null and void tiers of the past be used in things like more standard cheaps and nukes. it's mostly used for gathering info, breaking the limits of what you can do further, or defense versus other, higher-tier cheaps (SN defense is the most prominent example). with the advent of "infiltrative direct death," there are now even ways to use the opponent's own %n code against them.
by the way, the same guy who made this article hypothesized many subtiers of dragon tier (LAN, MAN, WAN, and my personal ludicrous favorite, "SPACE DRAGON," each detailing the reach of their destructive power) and a fucking *17th* tier, "Nebula," only possible with alien technology. i wish i was joking. at this point we don't even know if Mathrus was actually as dangerous as the guy said it was, of if the guy literally just made it up to sound cool.
if there's anything you want to know, like more of the story i heard about Mathrus instead of me just trying to fit a snippet in this youtube comment, i'd be happy to answer! it's always enjoyable to see new people learn about this side of the community
the mini-donald rant and you describing at how "majestic" the mugen database's tier list were hilarious by the way lmao
Crazy explanation lmao this video needs a sequel
Cheapies*
using a fighting game to literally fight against another person's code... magnificent.

Hey,
I see you've talked about MUGEN.
Though the weird thing is that it really seems like Elecbyte, the guys behind MUGEN just.. stopped working on MUGEN. I am not sure, but I've heard rumors that one of the reasons might've been the exploits of the engines. I am not betting this 100%, there are probably other important reasons. But I'm saying this because there's something else I wanted to say, but who knows--someone else may already have said this in the comment section;
There is actually an open source version of MUGEN called IKEMEN, which works the same way that MUGEN does, and it's completely based on MUGEN; It's even backwards compatible, so you don't have to do any editing on older winmugen characters to work.
So ikemen is GER for the most part

The scary part at the end is the realisation that you're an adult man creating video game content for youtube
Guys I once bought Sonic 4 in the internet. That’s it. Sonic 4 is just that scary
Unless your a mobile user.
I somewhat enjoyed episode II
@@lolster239 me too.
sonic mania isn't scary :^)
@@lolster239 He's talking about *episode 1*
There's so much to unpack here, it's kind of difficult in a short comment. From Gather Battle to MUGEN
And yet, you weaved it all together as seamlessly as steps in a dance.
I thought Psycho Shredder was the peak of this. But I was clearly wrong, on that note.
I could just correct you about Crazy Catastrophe's base character, but _technically_ you're still correct
Because as according to what I remember of KoF lore, Krizalid is connected to Orochi in some way.
And it's a pretty funny edit in a sense, it's what an SNK boss looks like to outsiders
Speaking of whom, is Crazy Catastrophe still up for download or has he been taken down?
@@localomorifan Given the nature of the Internet, it's definitely out there somewhere
As for sources and ease of access, I have nothing sadly
So, you're saying they made a character so powerful that it literally bricks your computer?
Man like, you can't make this shit up,
For context about the whole mugen stuff (yeah i know i'm 3 years away but still):
-Characters that destroy your pc ARE actually doable and have been done before. It essentially works by abusing flaws on mugen (most often what's called winmugen) to achieve RCE, at which point it's essentially game over.
-As far as i know Mathrus is not real at all. What it can do is indeed possible trough exploits, but the character itself doesn't exist and never existed
Just when I got over the Cybershell withdrawal I had for years you return, pls keep up the daily content
This perfectly-badly framed intro is giving me life.
oh god I remember reading about the cheapie wars late night in some weird thread
“Guys like Nostalgia Critic and… Y’know Nostalgia Critic and others.” Damn you really did Dog Walker dirty like that.
and thus ends the daily upload streak.
can't wait for another marathon couple years from now.
Anybody that wants a "genuine creepypasta experience" should play Pagan: Autogeny. It's about exploring a dead MMO
Kinda reminds me of a game called No Players Online, which was a creepypasta ARG where you explore an old online shooter where no one is online.
Like active worlds
@LAW Private Servers of Worlds are still used by many real world companies. My entire Real Estate Brokerage bought their own and calls it EXP Worlds, They host online virtual meetings with each other in it.

Also fun fact about the dev for gather battle: not only did he have a list of those who tried to cheat in gather battle, he had the list on his public website, displaying their full names and ip addresses
1:41 now I remember why I never watched this video in it's entirety
