Having waded through a dozen fodmap RUclips channels now, and become disillusioned with the very idea that I could see the diet through, at last some sensible, straightforward information and advice. No food fadiness or vegan overtones, just blissful common sense. If you are still out there, 7 years on, thanks so much!

Thank you VERY VERY much for this helpful and supportive video! I've suffered for over 60 years with undiagnosed IBS type symptoms and I'm just now following the fodmap diet and it's making a difference already in the first few weeks. I would eat cardboard if I thought it would help, so the low FODMAP diet is a breeze. My thanks to science and to people like you who take the time to share your knowledge, experiences and very helpful suggestions. All the best.

You can make garlic infused oil beceause fodmaps dissolves in water, not in oil or fat. So if you cut some garlic up in not too small pieces, fry them up in oil and then remove the garlic, the oil will not have any fodmaps in it. Thanx for the video :)

I would recommend getting an intolerance test. After suffering for over 2 years my doctor advised me of the Fodmap diet. I tried with let's say mixed results from the diet and medication. After reaching a low point I went for an food intolerance test and was told it was gluten I'm intolerant to. When discussing this with my doctor he explained that the allergy test they do wouldn't necessarily have picked it up as allergies and intolerance are different. Any ways. Since cutting out all gluten I feel so much better and suffer far less than I used to.
Hope this helps anyone who took the time to read. I wish you all the best.

    Fantastic video man!
I've been dealing with bad "IBS" issues for my whole life, but they've gotten to the point of being almost unbearable the past 2 years. Got a handful of testing done over this time and everything comes back negative, so my doctor is convinced it's all just from stress of school, anxiety, and just IBS.
I've been lactose intolerant most of my life. Going to try a gluten free diet starting in a few days and see what happens, in the case that it doesn't help me I have been looking into FODMAP as the next step I take. Tons of great information in this video. Glad you're doing so much better now!

Erik, thanks so much for the comment - it sounds like your story is very similar to mine. I cut out Gluten too but still found I was having a lot of trouble. Hi Alastair, thank you so much for this fantastic video. Our son Andy who is 21 years old has been suffering for almost a year now and has recently discovered that his problem is IBS. The doctors he has seen so far have more or less told him that there is not much that can be done. Andy discovered your video on Wednesday and suddenly he is very upbeat about the whole thing. Hearing your story about how this diet changed your life has really given him hope. He already has your 'no foods' and 'yes foods' list up on his fridge. He is currently in a flatshare as a student at Nottingham University... and would you believe studying Food Sciences ! ... so who knows, this might even have an impact on his future professional activity !
I am French and my husband is English and we live in Bordeaux in France. We have started watching your other videos and we like them very much. The content, the style and the video editing are all fantastic. It is also inspiring to see how you created your own company and how you encourage other people to do the same through your genuine enthusiasm ! All the best Alastair, Cheers, Muriel and Gordon

Muriel, thats one of the nicest comments I've ever had so thank you so much. Doing videos can be a little lonely sometimes and you don't know who you are reaching unless they take the time to comment as you have. This one has really spurred me on to make more and come back from my short break even stronger. Thank you :)
Tell Andy that if he wants to ask me anything, I'm more than happy to help.

Thank you so FREAKING MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been seaching for answers like these for almost 2 years now. I wont tell the story because we are all here for the same reasons Im sure but yea over a year 1/2 of doctors with creams + pills or telling me I had nothing... to finally find I had IBS by myself. There was a lot of stress in my life but I knew I had to change something I was doing wrong and this is finally it. I feel so wrong right now and thats everydays... im only 24 im trying my best at work & always feel tired.. didnt really know why but now I know exactly how to manage it. AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE!!! Im low on money but as soon as I get money this week Im starting a fresh & healthy life. Im so happy :)

    • @AlastairBanks
      @AlastairBanks  7 лет назад +1

Hey bud, this is so good to hear. In terms of money I don't think it needs to cost you lots to do this. I would invest in the app (to help you manage it) then print off some lists of food you can and can't eat for the fridge. Don't worry about buying expensive gluten free food. Just get good quality meat and veg (that you're allowed) and stick to that. Good luck :)

Thank you for making this video. Excellent references & links to great sources!! I will pass this on to anyone I know who is suffering. I began the LFM diet in April '19. The results were almost instant- in a good way! I was so surprised to be able to eat any veggies or fruits! Due to crc cancer treatment my gut stopped absorbing nutrients after 5 yrs NED. I was very strict with myself and did the elimination phase, testing and re-challenging is ongoing forever. It's so easy to get off track. I'm still working very hard on that. Yesterday ate at Subway. Been up since 1am doing all my emergency remedies (gut woke me up w/unspeakable suffering) so my day today is not a complete loss!

Excellent video. I've had IBS since I was 28. I am now 77. They called it spastic colon here in the USA back then. At first I only had an attack maybe once or twice year, and not a bad one. As I have aged it has come on more and more often and now the attacks are major. I am new to the lowfodmap way of eating but it is really helping! I can eat a little bit of regular bread, but just maybe one slice a day. A teeny tiny amount of onion in a recipe...like a teaspoonful minced very fine. I use lactose free milk but am able to tolerate 1 tablespoon of heavy cream in my coffee each morning. I havent seen lactose free cream here in my small community but will be on the lookout. No lactose free cheese either but I can handle a small amount of cheddar cheese Thanks for the great info. I'm also a diabetic so that makes things twice as hard. Have to stay away from sugars. .even honey and maple syrup but liquid pure stevia is my go to sweetener.

    • @hew195050
      @hew195050 2 года назад +1

Same here. 72 here and when I was in my 20s was diagnosed with spastic colon. Never had it explain to me what it was and so I went on my merry way. Fast forward to the last six years and the myriad of symptoms from this IBS it’s pretty much overwhelming. Just started the FOD map three days ago and already my belly is a little bit flatter. This is not meant for a long-term diet however and it’s only meant to do long enough to heal the gut. Given that, I’m sure eliminating most of these things would be better in the long term. I think years of IBS does it damage that may be irreparable. I know that it causes leaky gut syndrome, SIBO And can cause chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and tips! I've suffered from IBS for over 30yrs. I've always been extremely nutritionally conscious, avoiding high-fructose corn syrup, imitation color additives, MSG, BHT, etc. Last year was awful. I developed auto-immune hives which migrated all over my body for 5 miserable months until I finally met with a wonderful allergy Dr. After getting the hives under control with antihistamines, my IBS was continuing to get worse until I ended up in the hospital last November. It was then that my gastroenterologist shared and encouraged the Low-Fodmap diet. From the second day of starting the low-fodmap diet I felt better. I've been blaming many of the wrong foods and not realizing that some healthy foods are not good for some of us. I've got a little ways to go, but am excited to finally have some control and better understanding of my condition and my body. It's nice to know I'm not alone. Thanks again, you've been a big help!

After 12hrs in extreme pain I was told by my doctor that I just needed to take daily over the counter medication for the rest of my life and no food avoidance was necessary. I started doing my own research and came across FODMAP diet. I’ve completed 3 weeks and I finally have my energy back, walk 5 miles yesterday and I’m not tired today. Not sure if I’m going to regret or not, but I tried a little bit of coffee this morning with almond milk. I’ve been coffee free since I started the program and honestly I don’t even know why I tried today. I think I was missing the ritual of drinking coffee, not the coffee itself. Thank you for your very informative video

Hahaha, loved this video, your personality really shines through without even making an effort & I loved how you simplified everything. Thank you so much! I was recently encouraged by doc to try a low fodmap diet after a series of daily nightmare bloat!! Been a vegan past two years. Anyway, thank you once again 💜

Hi there, thank you so much for the kind comments :) The course is more about living with the diet and how you can adapt relatively easily. I try and point out lots of resources online and places I went when things were tough. I'd say it was still very relevant for you and if you liked this video then the course is essentially an hour long version of it cut up into bite sized (pardon the pun) bits :) I'd love your feedback. :)

Changed my life SO much! I thought I was going to die from the IBS experience. My doctor had never heard of it. Lol. My sister recommended it to me! So awesome! I love her! I have found that following the "rules" of food combining has helped me stick with it, to understand what and how to eat.

I used to use Garlic on everything and all of my Meals and started one day getting the worst chest pains. I literally felt like I was dying. Thought it was something more serious as the pain kept travelling to my Stomach. Ended up at A&E and found out it was trapped gas from eating the wrong types of Food. I was eating Garlic, Lentils, Wheat, Chickpeas, Kidney Beans. I assumed because it was Healthy, I was ok. Then I was recommended on Fodmap. Just currently going through my trigger foods and seeing what sets me off.

Quick note on the dairy: coming from someone who is lactose intolerant (I can handle virtually zero of the stuff), not all dairy is created equal in terms of lactose. Since it is milk sugar, many foods that have been lacto-fermented (e.g. plain yogurt, kefir, etc.) actually eliminate most of the lactose in the culturing process. Sour cream is not one of these, but plain Greek yogurt is safe and nearly a perfect substitute for this. Fermentation actually opens up possibilities for things other than just dairy, as gas (which causes bloating) produced from the bacteria digesting the FODMAPs we can't happens in a jar rather than your colon.
Many high fat products such as butter (which is 85% milk fat or greater) and certain cheeses contain very little lactose. I use large amounts of butter with no problems.
Finally, buying lactase supplements in pill form is much cheaper here in the US than buying lactose-free dairy products. Hope this helps!

Carrageenan is in a lot of things you wouldn't suspect as well, check your toothpaste label. Even though you don't eat toothpaste, it's ingredients are quickly absorbed through your gums!

Been on FODMAP for about three weeks now and I feel AMAZING 😌 I've switched to gluten and mostly dairy free products and I make my own oat wraps (gluten-free bread breaks the wallet) and I'm learning how to make different breads using different flours.
*It's amazing!* I still eat cheese and I have a tiny bit of cream in my coffee but I wanna switch to almond or oat milk. I haven't had an IBS attack in a while now. I switched to quinoa and rice; quinoa causes a bit of gas but that's right before I have a bowel movement do it helps keep everything moving and no constipation!
I've been sipping on pure maple syrup whenever I get a sweet craving (it's FODMAP friendly) and I've cut out basically everything that's caused my stomach to have problems which includes apples, avocados, onions, garlic.
I don't have cravings (except for sourdough bread) and I've shed 12lbs!

I really enjoyed watching your video! I loved how you explained all the different groups it was very helpful. I was told the only reason that dairy products are labeled lactose free is because those have had lactaid medications added to them. So my question would be if that is the case are they really benefiting your IBS? Something to look into. But like I said GREAT video loved it! I suffer from IBS as well and am trying it now too. Dairy is my enemy. So I switched to Soy milk only to discover that is not a good choice either lol.

Thanks Jolante, I have to say Im no dietician so I don't really know the ins and outs, I can only talk about my own circumstances. I've seen a big improvement with lactose free milk but I guess everyone has their own individual triggers so its a very personal thing. Good luck with the diet and thank you for the kind comments :)

LactASE is the enzyme which breaks down lactOSE into more simple sugars which the body can utilise (glucose and galactose). So yes, they just treat the milk or dairy product with lactASE to break down the lactose so you can drink it.
Many adults have a problem with lactose. As babies, the vast majority of us have no problem with milk, but since we are not meant to drink milk into adulthood (it's only meant to nourish babies after all, until they grow teeth and can eat proper food, we consume it because we CAN, not because we SHOULD), in some people, the production of lactase enzyme in the gut diminishes and thus we get problems with the lactose in dairy.
Monash Uni make a wonderful app for iOS and Android which I find very helpful. It does tell you that soy is unfortunately no good either (what a relief, nasty stuff IMO).

enjoyed your vid. - i related to everything you said re managing the diet. Especially about eating out, which has become much easier since legislation came in 2 years ago, making it necessary for resteraunt to identify certain allergins. here is another tip.
carry a piece of paper which lists the main things you can not eat. give it to the waiter and ask himto take it into the kitchen with your order. it makes it clear for the chef what he can and should not give you. Translate it not different languages for when you travel abroad. lastly dont forget you are the PAYING customer, you are entitled to have a meal you can eat.
