    Saki is also one of the guitarists in Nemophila. Great player. One of the most popular in Japan. I love this song. Just well played true metal. Great and fair review.

    Great Review and score - Mary's Blood along with Nemophila and Lovebites form my personal Trinity of Japanese all female metal bands (not that I don't like the others, I like a lot of them a lot, but these are my three favorites), but Mary's Blood doesn't get as much attention so always glad to see them get reacted to.
    Your girl on bass is RIO, you would really enjoy her live she's great at crowd interaction (actually they all are) - unfortunately for the longest time there were a lot of great live Mary's Blood videos out there on You Tube, but in the last few months seems to have been a bit of a Purge so it's mostly now just what's on their official channel (though I don't think I've heard of them being problematic for Reviewers, just a lot of video uploaded from their live DVDs got taken down recently). Mary's Blood has a song called Karma where RIO gets a nice little bass solo and a chance to really spotlight her chops, although I think all the footage of it out there is amateur recordings off cell phones.
    In terms of learning names Mary's Blood is probably the easiest of the Japanese bands - in addition to RIO, the drummer and Band leader is Mari (although the band is actually named after either the drink and/or the British Queen, but Mari from Mary's Blood is still memorable).And the singer calls herself EYE (unconfirmed, but I've seen it suggested that her real name is Ai, which is pronounced like English eye, and is the Japanese word for Love but also sometimes a feminine name).
    The guitarist is Saki, who is also in Nemophila, although in this video she is 6 or 7 years younger than she was in the video for Oiran you reacted to and also hadn't started dyeing her hair red. This is probably the song and solo that really put her on the map.
    You've probably seen the backstory to Lovebites, how Miho and Haruna met playing together in legendary Japanese all female band Destrose that never really made it big themselves but spun off a whole bunch of other bands many of which did (including Lovebites). Mary's Blood was the first of the Destrose spin off bands - EYE and guitarist Mina co-founded Destrose in 2005, Mari had joined by 2007. On New Years Eve 2008, the original Destrose famously all split up with Mina keeping the name and quickly recreating the band whcih lasted another 6 or 7 years although the lineup had a ton of turnover thereafter - a 17 year old Saki was actually one of the first new members Mina added after the original lineup split, though her tenure in Destrose was less than a year. A couple months later the other 4 original Destrose members all regrouped and formed Mary's Blood. Saki and RIO both joined Mary's Blood in 2012, forming the official lineup through the current day (although they use a second guitarist named Yashiro when they play live, but Saki plays all the guitar parts in the studio recordings).
    Also agree 100% on not needing to understand the lyrics to enjoy the song - the vocalists voice just becomes another part of the music.

      I agree when you don't understand the lyrics. The vocal melody just becomes part of the music.

    Not sure why, but Mary's Blood always seem to be underdogs in the J-metal scene. Even though they've been around since 2009 (and with this line up since 2012) they just never seem to catch a real break. It might be the fact that they dabble in different genres quite a bit and sometimes tend to lean towards punk (usually more in guitar & bass tones rather than song structure, but they do have some full on punk songs like High Five and I'm Dead). All of the ladies are ex-Destrose members except Rio the bassist, and they are every bit as good as Lovebites and Aldious as far as chops go. Maybe it's just the songs don't have the hooks and they are darker than the other bands mentioned. They used to have a couple live videos on their channel from a concert at Akasaka Blitz that used to send chills up my spine for Death Queen's March & Coronation Day, and both showed not only how great of a band they are, but what a dynamic frontwoman Eye is. Talk about a stage general, she is the stage commander in chief, except when Saki goes off with her maniacal solos.

      I think it may be partially because the vocals are more "Japanese" sounding for a lack of a better word. That kind of singing isn't as popular in the west (and I don't really like her vocals either, even though they aren't bad, I jsut don't like the sound). It's to do with the emphasis on certain syllables, the way they start and end words and such that is quite different; it almsot reminds me of over-emphasised anime voice lines (which I also dislike).

    • @Ratovx

      @@Hedgehog1039 Its just lack of presence on youtube. their shit was relly hard to find, music videos not avaible and being removed when fans uploaded. only recently they started using their youtube channel, uploading live stuff

    • @Hedgehog1039
      @Hedgehog1039 3 года назад

      @@Ratovx That probably also factors into it, yeah. Of all the j-metal / rock bands I have showed to people, this band are one of the least frequently liked among them. There will be reasons for it but that seems to be the case (and it obviously isn't because the musicians are bad).

    • @Ratovx
      @Ratovx 3 года назад +1

       @Hedgehog's World Thats sure is a huge factor. just look at NEMOPHILA. Its Saki's secundary band (Saki is Mary's blood guitarrist) But they started on youtube, uploading covers, doing live, and then their own music.
      NEMOPHILA is more hyped than Mary's Blood. The only reason for that is marketing choices.

    • @Hedgehog1039
      @Hedgehog1039 3 года назад

      @@Ratovx I'd disagree that it is the only reason, very much so. Mayu's vocals are a very different style again. That being said, Nemophila chose very very good songs to cover to get themselves attention.
      As I say, my biggest problem with this band are the vocals (but she isn't "bad", I just don't like them).
      There are numerous factors along with the music not being as "catchy" as often as others.

    7yr old video, guitarist Saki was what, 23?! (Destrose, Mary’s Blood, Amahiru, Nemophila, live it, learn it love it).
    Singer Eye is my fav of the jfemetal ladies, such grit, and I sing this opening “yeaaaaaaaeaaaahh” Every. Morning. Punker Rio is a solid bassist. Drummer Mari? Is not their namesake as I thought (they’re named after Bloody Mary’s), but she (& Eye) original members. And try playing along with the chorus… deceptive rhythm, same melody but starts on a different (eighth note) beat each time, very cool attention to detail imho, even when the solo is complete chaos, it comes home to the chorus melody. And surprised you didn’t say the word painkiller!, but subconsciously I think it took you to the master, Ian Hill. How about their “Death Queens March”? or something like that, Great live video. Coronation Day kicks ass. Or “On The Rocks” live at Noan no Yaon for something bluesy/different. Or “High5” MV for one of Rio’s recent pop punk slanted songs. They’re versatile and fun, but bent on rocking the Hardest. Oh, Yashiro is their second live guitarist; she can hang, occasional harmonized shred a la Accept… Enjoy 🎸💃😎
    From their album of Anime covers, featuring the dude who sang the original back in late 80s?, just a great song, well executed, Pegasus Fantasy ruclips.net/video/M-XG-RW79eE/видео.html

    Thanks David. Excellent reaction. They were the third, all female Japanese band recommended to me. I've been a little sidetracked by Lovebites and Band-Maid lately but want to hear more from these ladies. There are all sorts of connections between bands that I need to diagram on a whiteboard sometime. Lovebites and Mary's Blood were both founded by former members of Destrose, an all female heavy metal band best know for the bands its members went to after it broke up. In Lovebites, Miho and Haruna both came from Destrose. In Mary's Blood, Eye (vocalist) and Saki (guitar) were also in Destrose. Other members of Mary's Blood were also from Destrose but left. Destrose seems to have been a major launching platform for Japanese female bands. Saki (Mary's Blood) is also the lead guitarist in Nemophila. Whew,

    • @overtheedge4711

      The original Mary's Blood lineup were all x-Destrose, except a 2nd guitarist named Chiba (Mari was called a "guest" member, but she is the only drummer listed for the 2007-2008 version of Destrose). In 2012, 3 members left Mary's Blood and Eye & Mari recruited Saki, who was in the reformed version Destrose from 2009 until 2010 and Rio, who I've never been able to find out much about pre-Mary's Blood. But yeah, whew is right, trying to get any sort of factual info on these bands. Somebody needs to do one of the family tree charts on Destrose someday.

    I didn't get a notification for this reaction, which is a shame, since Mary's Blood were the band that got me into Japanese metal. Well, actually there were a couple of much older bands I liked, but as far as the "new" bands, specifically the "all-female" and/or "female fronted" Japanese metal bands of the so-called "boom", Mary's Blood were it (and early exist+trace, but I never really considered them "metal" even though they get lumped into the same category). The album this track comes from, "Countdown to Evolution" (2014), is the one where Saki firmly established herself as a creative force and shred monster of the highest order. It's the first track (actually second, but the first is a minute-long guitar intro). Technically it's their first full-length album, but they released three 6-track "mini-albums" previous to it. The whole album's killer and varied, with songs ranging from straight up rockers to brain melting thrash metal, all played with some serious punk aggression. This album changed the game in a big way. Before it, a lot of the more popular bands in this "boom" kind of all sounded the same, and I mean Destrose and Aldious and Cyntia and even early Mary's Blood, a lot of their song could basically be interchangeable, like you couldn't easily tell one band from another. They also all tended to start leaning in a more pop-ish direction, but Mary's Blood didn't, they just got heavier and more aggressive, and they took on Saki as their new guitar player, and then "Countdown to Evolution" happened. It's a fantastic album, and the one after it was even better. Amazing band. Marionette was a strange choice for a PV, I think, since it's not the most radio friendly song. Black Cat's more of a bluesy hard rock song that could have potential mass appeal, and Promised Land is the big Power Metal number, but I feel like they went with Marionette to make a statement. Having said that, as much as I love this song (and I do), I kind of hate that it's most people's introduction to Mary's Blood because when it was released, everyone and their dog mentioned that the main riff sounded like Painkiller by Judas Priest, which got kind of annoying, because even though they lifted the riff (albeit modified), the rest of the song's nothing like Painkiller, and every other song on the album is nothing like anything by anyone else, but still people who needed an excuse to roll their eyes and dismiss Japanese bands as "unoriginal" copycats of Western bands had their excuse to write off Mary's Blood based on hearing one song with a familiar sounding riff, as some sort of female Japanese Judas Priest clones, which they are absolutely not at all. I was pleasantly surprised when you didn't do that.
    I feel like I have a whole lot to say about Mary's Blood, but I've already typed too much that you probably won't read it, so I'll save it for the next one.

    I'll try posting a link to a good live version of this after 24 hours. My post with the link is hidden.
    Just starting to get familiar with these gals. Apparently I have been listening to a untitled live version of this from their live @ Blaze 2015-16 tour. If it wasn't for the main riff I wouldn't have recognized the song.
    Eye - vocals (2009-present)
    Mari - drums, bandleader (2009-present)
    Rio - bass guitar (2012-present)
    Saki - guitar (2012-present)
    Yashiro - guitar, vocals - listed as support member (she's on the live version)
    Live version destroys the music video. They significantly reworked this for two guitars. I have no idea why the list the second guitarist as a support member. She's about as good as the main guitarist. Vocals on the live version are very different (and improved). Second guitarist sings backup, which sounds much better than the layered vocals on the MV. MV is from 2014 so maybe the second guitarist was hired after that.

      @@paulwilson7989 Thanks for looking up the information about Yashiro. I was like, wait! There's a second guitarist. She's in the 2015 concert and the tenth anniversary concert, but is listed as an support member. I know that the Band formed at the end of 2009 around Eye (vocalist) and Mari (drummer). The other three members of the early band left in 2012. So the band reformed in 2013 and came out with their first full length album in 2014. This video was part of the 2014 album.

    Rio/bass is a clone for Judas Priest's Hill, she has a wicked style and is even more pronounced when you experience her LIVE. One name wonders Saki/guitar (Nemophila her latest side project is one of the best guitarist and one that gives other female musicians opportunities to get some public attention), Mari/drums is wicked good and came over from the great Destrose band along with Eye/vocals and Saki/guitar and then you have Rio who is happy to support the band even if she gets very little shine time (hard to get any with Saki in your group). Been around since 2009 and have stayed true to the Metal pledge, worry that with Nemophila getting ready to try and tour that Saki will not have the same time to devote to the band. Score is not important, just wanted to get your take, After Show-Ya this was my favorite J/Metal band especially LIVE until both were dethroned by Lovebites! Show-Ya and Destrose are the 2 other great groups that you need to experience to get the full J/Metal treatment. Good one as always and appreciate the honest points where you were not sold.
