Lexus/Toyota has a great V8 heritage. When their 4.3 liter went into the LS 430 back in 2001 it broke records for being the first v8 to past epa standards and dodge all associated taxes
While in a vacuum, it is a great car, it is overshadowed by basically everything else out of Germany. The biggest disappointment is the AA80E 8AT, while not a bad transmission, it no way matches the shift speed and quality of the ZF 8 speed. Heck, a Ford F150 V8 with a 10 speed would shift faster. Then there is the engine sound, despite being a V8, it just sounds muted. It is surely a Lexus and cannot shake the boring. The panel gaps? Perfect. Reliability, top notch, fit and finish, quality. But as a sports sedan, it doesn't hold up.
I live in Europe, where the German competitors to this car are plentiful, but where the IS only ever came as the 200t and the 300h. I'd literally rather import an IS 350 from the US than buy one of those German cars. It's just that much cooler, and reliability is a great thing to have. And the best thing? It would be cheaper, even with the import costs included. As to why the 350 and not the 500, I prefer the looks of the pre-2021 version of the IS which didn't have a 500 model (and the 350 just sounds better than the 500 IMO).
I wish that Lexus had done a bit of a better job with the transmission, it really does hold back the car a lot. The 8 spd ZF is legendary, wonder what was behind their choice. This this will last like 70 years longer than any other v8 powered car so I can't really complain too much
The AA80E is an amazing transmission and actually 0.5 ms faster than ZF8 at redline on manual mode. Don't get misled by car reviewers who don't know how to use it.
Good video! Can definitely feel the bias of some fanboys in this chat. Lol I looked up the car, having never seen it before. The seats and apholstery are nice, but the dash and wheel are dated. For that money I expect some luxury. Anyone >_> comparing this to a Mercedes interior hasn't stepped into a Mercedes since 2010. This dashboard has the same personality as a base Subaru, all function, no class. No fancy little dash clock makes up for it. At 70k, "what more do you need," is unacceptable. The naturally aspirated V8 is nice, but I have heard the performance of it is underwhelming compared to other V8s. I do like the fact a "normal" looking car has one, but it's not a normal price. I'd compare it to a 2014 Chevrolet SS or a Pontiac G8. I agree that it's probably a fun car, but at this price point and it's supposed competition, a N/A V8 doesn't provide enough value to make up for a modern interior with creature comforts. As a greater indicator or insult to injury as someone said, and conclusion to this essay, I'll pose a question. Why do you not see more of these on the road everywhere if it's so good?
