  • Like other dogs, there are Pomeranian pros and cons.
This small dog is a member of the spitz family, and like another spitz, originated in the Arctic Circle.
The Pomeranian derives from white spitz that existed in Pomerania, northern Germany, from about 1700. They were much larger dogs and were bred down after being imported into Britain about a hundred years ago.
Queen Victoria was much taken with the breed, which helped to make it very popular. The Pomeranian seems to have gained the reputation of being an old lady's lapdog.
While it is certainly ideal for that role, adoring lots of attention, it is also a lively, robust little dog that would walk its owners off their feet if given the chance.
This affectionate and faithful dog is good with children and makes a delightful pet. It is also a fine show dog for those with plenty of time on their hands to care for its double coat, which must be groomed with a stiff brush every day and regularly trimmed.
In this video I’ll be talking about Pomeranians pros and cons, to help you determine if a Pom would be right for you or your household.

I’m thinking of getting a Pomeranian, and live in an amply spaced house with quite a large backyard so I will be able to provide it with all its needs. However, I also have an 8 year old cat. Do you think that it would be a good idea to get one?

8-year-old cat? Nope. They can get along well if they grow up together. 🤓

One has to be seriously careful with these guys with respect to their teeth. They tend to to develop gum disease and often have to have teeth removed. If you fail to catch this quickly they will likely develop heart disease. They may also suffer from collapsing trachea in their old age. Patella luxation is another common problem. They are beautiful characters but vet bills are a concern.
    Cheers,
    Chris

Agreed, I’ve spent about 9k on my 10 year old boy in vet bills. It’s really heart breaking. He has heart issues, and trachea problems. Despite annual dentals, tons of extractions were needed. Poms were always my dream dog, but I am not sure I would own another.

@@RosemarieFit sorry that you are going down the same path that we did but at least yours was taken care of from the get go. We adopted ours as an abandoned puppy mill rescue. All of his teeth had to be removed and a massive ear infection had to be cleared. Irritable bowel disease with protein loss started about a year after we got him, so he spent the rest of his life on low fat ID with Tylan powder( a long term antibiotic). At least the Tylan got rid of whatever was making him stink. His fur or ears smelled sour from the time we got him until about six months after we started the Tylan. The heart disease started about three or four years after we got him ( probably because of the teeth). He ended up on three compounded liquid meds twice a day. About 5 years in, he developed a bad back so he was on gabapentin twice a day after that. About six months before he died his trachea started to collapse badly so we started giving him hydrocodone in the evenings. During his time with us he had two multiple day emergency vet visits which were insanely expensive. All this said, and despite his anger management issues, we loved him dearly. I would gladly take in another one right this minute.
Best of luck with your little one. Keep taking care of him. They really can persevere😀. Ours lasted 7 years after being rescued from the box that he spent his first six in😖
      Cheers,
      Chris
