      4 plays nothing like the first three. Sure, it's a similar concept, but the balance and level design are very different. It's big and bombastic, but not as polished as the NES games. It was an experiment, much like the second one. The player is over-powered, and doesn't match the level design as well as the first and third games. With a couple more sequels to fine-tune it, I think Super Castlevania could have been as good or better than the original trilogy, but instead of iterating on it they went back to the original formula for Rondo and then on to the Metroidvania style, which has more in common with Simon's Quest.

    • @melvinpunymeyer8104
      @melvinpunymeyer8104 8 лет назад +6

      The Wii is actually a pretty great console. It brought the virtual console to us, which ended up having a ton of games, and it is backwards compatible with all GCN games. The first party releases are superb as well. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are incredible games. It was also the first Nintendo console to have any kind of worthwhile online play. The GCN failed in that regard. People who hate on the Wii because of the motion controls are ignorant.

  • @noir_cesar
    @noir_cesar 8 лет назад +2

    Ian pretty much summarized why the Genesis is my favorite 16 bit console. The Nintendo fanboys rave about all the rpgs on the snes, but for some of us who don't care for rpgs, the genesis is where I can play the games Im really into, like beat em ups, shooters, or just bad ass action platformers. And they dont suffer from slowdown like on the snes, thanks to blast processing ;) Okay okay jokes aside, if you're into adventure games and rpgs, then yea I'm sure SNES is where its at for you, but if you want straight up action games, the genesis wins hands down, and you can't deny that no matter how deep your nintendo fandom runs
    Shinobi series, Streets of Rage series, Contra Hard Corps, Batman & Robin, Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, X Men 2, Castlevania Bloodlines, Ranger X, Rocket Knight, TMNT, Lightening Force, Punisher, Robocop vs Terminator, Strider the list goes on!

  • @TaskMaster5
    @TaskMaster5 8 лет назад +3

    I preferred Genesis over Snes back then, and still do to an extent today, and this is coming from someone had both as a kid. The main reason was because Genesis was the 'arcade' machine and got a lot of near flawless ports of good arcade games. It also had many arcade style games, which is something I've ALWAYS enjoyed due to their 'pick up and play' nature. Snes had loads of RPGs, which are my least favorite genre due to the sheer time dedication and amount of attention they require from the player.
    Granted, I've a self admitted short attention span, so arcade style games, shooters, beat em ups, racers and things like that are more suited to my nature. I like a quick fix and don't want to be bothered trying to remember some cryptic clue given 2 chapters ago or put the game down for a week only to forget what the fuck I was supposed to be doing. XD
    So yeah, to each their own here. Both systems are incredible, and I've enjoyed the Snes more as I got older and used it a lot more (Also once my dad started buying more pick-up-and-play oriented games, as he is like me in that regard). Still have my heart with the Genesis though.

    One of the reasons I DO like the system is one of the same reasons Ian doesn't: I didn't have an SNES as a kid. My family had a Genesis, and I loved it, but most of the games that I really wanted to play were exclusive to its competitor.
    Throw in the Super Game Boy (which I didn't even learn about until the Gamecube era), how easy it is to play imports, and wondering what other RPGs (which I didn't discover until Pokemon) were out there, and it became irresistible years later.

  • @maxwillson
    @maxwillson 8 лет назад +2

    I agree with him. I recently sold my SNES and games because I didn't have time for them. The Sega Genesis grew on me. I love how most of the games have zero saves, they are very short and extremely hard! It's like an old school Dark Souls, you pop in the game and just play until you get good at it.

    • @TheJoejoez
      @TheJoejoez 5 лет назад

      Probably b/c Sega came out in 89 and competed directly against the NES, those games have a similar style. Sega was also KING in the arcades and got all the good arcade ports. Sega kept the arcade vibe all the way until Dreamcast, however that's not what most gamers wanted then. Back then when I had way more time however, I DID want to play the Zelda, Secret of Mana etc. type games. SNES is better for the experiences, Genesis better for pick up and play...and I'd argue NES better than both for pick up and play.

    "You can keep your sports games, Ian!"
    In all seriousness though, he gave out the best reason why he's not that into the SNES, 40 seconds in: he simply didn't own one back then. I mean, wouldn't owning a console and sticking with it meant that you liked it in the first place? Back then, I never even knew that SEGA existed until a relative showed me a Genesis and tried Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage. Fun stuff, but it simply didn't interested me enough to consider it, let alone, change teams.
    I don't see anything wrong with his opinions.

I don't get why people are so my team vs your team about this subject still. Both consoles have lots of great games, the SNES having more iconic games on it I must admit. But I don't feel like I missed out at all not having SNES, I spent so many hours having a great time on Genesis. Ian I give you props I feel the same way. I had an NES but then I was given a genesis and I was a genesis kid and I loved it. yes I enjoyed playing SNES at peoples house occasionally but my go to was genesis until N64 came out. I appreciate the snes for what it brought but it was not a nostalgic game system for me and I never owned one until late 2000's. NES I always knew had a great library and was nostalgic from the beginning but SNES I had no idea it was so beloved until the mid 2000's retro game boom on the internet that educated me what I missed out on. I also don't have time for long rpg's so I love pick up and play platformers.

      Timothy Vreeland Uuhh what? Think you are mixing up the Snes with the Genesis. The genesis had technically a more modern soundchip but was held back tremedously by the carts at the time as there wasnt enough space to fully utilize PCM audio. Snes had the smarter choice in using sampled audio modulation. It may have been "cheating" but it was in the end a superior audio experience. That however doesn't say that the Genesis could pull off some amazing soundtracks. Just check out Thunderforce IV

    • @xMasterSparku
      @xMasterSparku 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah Golden Axe isn't even good by beat em up standards, it's incredibly bland with little to no depth and it just gets fucking exhausting, an issue a lot of beat em ups have but one that can ruin it for many people regardless of how common it is in the genre. Some friends give me shit for that opinion but fuck it, I'll stand by it.

I think one of the reasons I remember gaming in that era is because they were developmental years and the SNES was my primary console. Even after I had the N64, Ps1, Ps2, and GameCube, I still remember my family had the SNES in the living room. My mother played Super Ghosts n' Ghouls for years. All four of my younger siblings learned to play Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars. We had Super Ninja Boy (I adore this game) and Battle-Toads: Double Dragon. This console was just such an important part of my childhood. :3

    The SNES represented a lot of things, but to me it served as the pinnacle of sprite-based graphics (well until the recent retro craze) before the industry got all polygon-happy. The SNES is where you can draw that line between retro and modern gaming. And unlike their follow-up (N64), many of the games aged wonderfully. That's one of the reasons I do have a strong appreciation for the system.
    But I do understand not having a connection to a console. I guess it's kind of like how I'm often baffled by many collectors love and admiration for the N64, whereas I find it hard to play it for any period of time.
    And I have to agree that I'm not terribly fond of Donkey Kong Country either. It's not a bad game; just not particularly strong either.

    As a kid, one day, my mom brought randomly a new snes from work because she got it very cheap and it sat in our home for 4 years and nobody touched it, because we had no games for it. so that's my memory for the snes. ^^'

    I missed out on SNES growing up. Last few years I've done a lot of retro gaming through the library of SNES and Genesis. My conclusion is that I much prefer the Mega Drive library, even though it's smaller. I prefer the NES grindy exploration rpgs compared to the more story focused ones on SNES. Main reason I prefer Mega Drive is Sonic and Phantasy Star games.

      The problem is that many of the shumps on the super are really slow due to lag. I do kinda like the genesis better for shumps, but I hear the PCE and the Turbo tend to be really good for shumps.

    The SNES has a library that is impossible to enjoy. Genuinely, has anyone played Link to the Past for fun? I mean if you never played LTTP when it came out. If you didn’t grow up with it there’s no enjoyment to be had. Even the N64… can you play OOT or MM? Once you’ve played, or rather slogged through the first 3D Zeldas there’s no reason an adult would spend their free time going back, unless they had autism.

    As someone who loves the SNES I actually felt that Ian actually gave some good points. There are a few things I would like to say though in a fair manner:1. In terms of not liking the DKC games it is a matter of opinion. I personally like them but it really comes down to how one approaches the games. Though I strongly disagree with Ian on that one I respect his opinion.2. The SNES shooter library (shmups) is not quite as bad as people say it is. Sure the Genesis shooter library is the better one (along with TG-16, DC and SAT) but there are still some decent shooters to be found. R-Type III, Gradius III, AeroFighters, Space MegaForce, Axelay and Firepower 2000 to name a few. I'd recommend give some of these a try if possible.3. In terms of the library being weak it all is a matter of perspective. I still think most of the games hold up on the SNES just like I think most of the games hold up on the Genesis. I do agree with Ian on the fact that the Genesis was more experimental but it could be hit or miss. Once again it is all a matter of opinion.Interesting that Ian mentions he had a friend with an SNES while he had a Genesis. That was the complete opposite of me. I had the SNES and a friend I used to know had the Genesis...

  • @laurenriley2943

    There were quite a few experimental games on SNES as well. You have games like Demon's Crest, E.V.O Search for Eden, Area 88, Wild Guns, Pilotwings, Mario Paint, Super Scope 6, Illusion of Gaia, and Tetris Attack. The SNES is not known for side scrolling shooters, but Space Megaforce, Terror 2000, and Darius Twin were pretty good.. There were also some fun action games like Super Smash TV, Total Carnage, The Super Star Wars Trilogy, X-calibur 2037, Run Saber, The Final Fight sequels, Turtles in Time, Super Punch Out, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, Knights of the Round, Captain Commando., Turrican 1 and 2, and, Spawn . Ian is entitled to like the Genesis more, but it honestly does not sound like Ian knows the SNES that well beyond the "popular" titles to actually compare both sixteen bit systems. It doesn't matter. Ian's opinion is his own, and he does not have to justify why he likes Genesis more. I would say that both systems are even in terms of quality games. I might give SNES the edge only because I personally enjoy the games on that system more, but you cannot go wrong with either one.

    I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand the concept of personal taste. My favorite system of all times is the SNES, I never had one but I played a lot when I was young, it does have the games I love the most. Recently I bought a Super Famicom and it's a dream come true to me, but it's no big deal that the next person doesn't find it attractive. I do hate the N64. I think it's the most useless console of all time and people hate me for thinking like that. It didn't delivered the next generation of all I loved on the Super Nes. Just Like that. I don't care about the classic NES because I never had one and didn't know anyone who has one at the time either. It's not a bad console at all. It does have a massive wonderful library of games. I just have no feelings for it. People like to hate on Ian because it's trendy, I belive....

    The SNES has the most diverse and rich library of any console, You can find several great games for almost any genre! Its a very easy system to import and modify for imports, the spc 700s power cannot be understated, Mode 7 allowed for some great looking scaling and rotation effects, it was capable of pseudo 3D visuals, A revolutionary 6 button controller with two shoulder buttons which made games like Street Fighter 2 playable on the console. A truly remarkable piece of technology.

      The Genesis also has a 6 button controller also the spc700 doesn't match the ym2612 and the psg and when you used pcm mixing on that console it was unstoppable the SPC700 is to muffled and just garbage from a technical standpoint sure it has great music but just doesn't compare to the Genesis

  • @PeteSkerritt

    My love for the SNES, admittedly, has some root in the the fact that it was the first console that I bought with my own money. The console is synonymous with my early adult life (19-24), and it carries a lot of memories. Even though I bought a Genesis in 1992, it wasn't until much later in life that I really appreciated why it appealed to me (the sports games were-- and still are, in some instances-- pretty darned great). With the SNES, I can list 20+ specific games and what was going on in my life at the time.
    I do understand where Ian is coming from. Not all people have the same overwhelming reactions to certain games. The Genesis offered games that really resonated with him, same as the SNES had games that did the same for me.

      Yeah, but don't forget about the other half of of games you listed AND did not list, like Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Terranigma, Fire Emblem, Soul Blazer, Act Raiser, etc.
      Also, don't assume that the Megadrive is without quality games. Besides the Sonic series, you have the superior Contra, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Sword of Vermilion, the HIGHLY underrated Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4, Shining Force, Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania Bloodlines, Hyperstone Heist, Landstalker, Fatal Labyrinth, Faery Tale Adventure, Warsong, Traysia, I could go on for awhile.
      The Super Nintendo undoubtedly had a larger quantity of quality RPGs than the Genesis, but remember that the Genesis was marketed to a more mature audience, putting an emphasis on replicating the "Arcade" experience.

    I agree with Ian a lot. I didn't get a 16 bit system until 1993, and by that time I was aware of many of the different games for both systems. For the most part, I was turned off from SNES, because I didn't love the sequels to the NES games on it as much. Also, several of my friends already had a SNES, and maybe one I hardly saw had the Genesis, so for me the Genesis held a library of games I didn't have access to playing; namely Sonic. I also bought the Genesis arcade stick, and since most fighting games were 6 buttons in the arcade at the time, it was really convenient being able to play the games the same way.

    The Super Nintendo has some of my absolute favorite games of all time; Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Earthbound etc. but when I think of the library as a whole, it's kind of a weak one. My gaming consist mostly of platformers, shooters too (with a dash of classic arcade titles and some light Namco-fanboyism), and compared to the Nes/Famicom library, that has tons of games that I can just pop in whenever and have a blast with, the SNES library seems kinda weak. What the SNES has, is of top quality, but I just can't see myself returning to the system all that much. Don't know wether I'd place it above or below the MegaDrive, but one thing is clear; Nothing beats the Nes/Famicom in my book!

    Exclusives sell systems and exclusives are why I had (and still have) an SNES and a Sega Genesis. In the case of SNES/Genesis multiplatform games, I lean toward the SNES versions in almost every case. On SNES the graphics tended to be smoother, the audio, to me, sounded better - "less tinny", and ports of games like Sunset Riders were more arcade-accurate on SNES.

    I grew up with the Genesis but I learned extremely quickly that the SNES is far superior in pretty much every way other than sports and shooters. Part of my love for the console is nostalgia bias, but honestly, most of the games I love on the console now are games I never had growing up. I tend to agree about the SNES. I can count the number of truly great games for it on two hands, beyond that, there isn't a lot more to it. I do not like to play RPGs as a general rule so those are not a high point for me. If you cut those "great" RPGS out there is a laughable low number of great games on the SNES. I truly despise the insane amount of reverb that is present in nearly all SNES games and with such a laughable slow CPU, you can't find one game that doesn't have an insane amount of experience ruining slowdown. The genesis is better on all these counts so this is why I would put it higher in my book. Not BAD or anything just not nearly as good as the majority of people seem to think it is.
