Letterman tried to put him to the test in this interview but Dave survived admirably. I don't think it was because Letterman thought he was "a sexist asshole" who needed to be roasted, though. I think it's because he knew he could hold his own but that if you're going to boast like that the interesting thing for the audience is seeing you prove it. It made a great episode and it really is an enlightening interview. If he hadn't mucked about with him it would have been boring bullshit and I think Letterman knew that's not how you sell OR criticize a thing like Van Halen. You have to get in there and get dirty and then we see the answer to the real questions we had. I'd love to hear both men's feelings on the issue now, not that anyone is going to spell anything like that out or even stoop to tell you the real truth behind the show, something fans never recognize. But Dave passed the test, he wasn't all talk even if he was young and mostly spirit at the time. Both very smart men, smarter than they play it, actually. If you can't already tell, I loved this interview.

Dave is a homosexual still in the closet. An open secret in the industry. I just think it’s funny how so many homophobic knuckleheads worship this guy and take him for some ladies man. Shows the power of an image and people’s imaginations. You think you know these people… you don’t at all.
