They did. But HD TV didn't come to the UK properly until 2006, and BBC HD in 2007. But VHS recording and analogue 576-line SD TV was still the main way of recording/archiving TV stuff well throughout this period.
Back in the days when Jimmy White took some money off HP Sauce to become James Brown (hence the sauce-splatter union jacks on his bow tie and the brown waistcoat) and the BBC called him Jimmy White anyway.
