Is drum editing cheating?
Does manipulating the timing of a drum performance rob a production of that good ol' human feel?
Should you avoid drum editing altogether or should you embrace the true power that it holds when used contextually?
There's a lot of negativity towards drum editing on the internet calling it "cheating". People claim (usually the inexperienced) that it produces overproduced, sterile results.
The truth is that drum editing can be used in creative and subtle ways to help a performance without sucking the life out of it.

Hey man, just recently found your channel, I see you've only been making videos for a few months, and just wanted to share my support! Love your content, small videos and straight to the point. Take care!
Glad you're digging the vids...thanks for watching!
Superb! Hell yeah! Thank you, my man!!
Right on the money - very useful instructions, and a solid argument for tastefully editing percussion to suit the genre. Thanks!
Thanks for watching, Oren!
Awesome info and to the point man thanks!!
Thanks so much dude, glad you found it helpful!
Frightbox Recording yeah man all your videos are informative and helpful and not gonna knock anyone on here but some people just drag out so much useless info you never figure out what they are trying to even show you. I applause your approach man!
I think there’s a difference between “some tasteful editing” and gridding everything to an inhuman degree like a lot of commercial pop/rock records. Beato’s definitely got a point but it can be done tastefully as well.
great video man
Thanks Lee!
Hi! Nice channel! :D I love your videos!
Can you make a video about the reverb in the snare?
Thanks for watching and a vid on that topic is definitely in the works!
instant like!!
very cool bobby!
Thanks John!
How do you deal with editing around cymbals that are decaying around the hits? I don’t usually touch drums for this reason lol.
Do you playlists in Pro Tools for this process so you can return back to the original takes?
Yes I do! I always keep them in my archive as well.
how do you get to nudge stuff and not have gaps between clips?
on Mac it's Ctrl and +/- on the numeric keypad. Make sure you set your nudge to a low value like 10ms.
@@FrightboxRecording awesome thanks!!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
No The Evil Dead?.. I think a video on what genre needs drum tightening and to what extent would benefit most metal/rock producers nowadays
lol! I have a massive VHS collection and Evil Dead is definitely in that collection. I'll do a video showing my collection one day. More editing vids are in the works. Thanks for watching!
ohh and i miss bad taste and braindead in your VHS catalog :P
Unfortunately I've never owned them on VHS. I used to rent Dead Alive all of the time though lol.
I mean music editing is like using drugs. It’s ok in the right moderation ;)
lmao!!! love it.
Hi, my name is mike and I’m addicted to editing
There’s no such thing as “cheating” in art other than like AI “created” shit which isn’t art anyway and literally everyone since the dawn of time has criticized new technologies that make art more accessible as being “cheating”. (again excluding anything AI because it makes art less accessible, not more). Yet you could take any classical composer and shit on them with modern musical complexity and the tech we have now.
