  • In this second in the series of expert interviews, I talk with Dr Bruce Patterson about the pathology of Long Covid, his latest research results which suggest residual viral protein is responsible for triggering long haulers symptoms, and just what the implications of that might be for treatment and recovery.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Long Covid Handbook (Oct 2022), by Gez Medinger and Professor Danny Altmann and published by Penguin Books is now available in paperback, ebook and audiobook. A singular resource that brings together everything patients, clinicians and academics have learnt about the condition since early 2020, as well as lessons from sufferers and researchers of ME/CFS and other chronic conditions. It offers world leading expert advice on understanding, managing and treating Long Covid. The Long Covid Handbook is available from the following links:

It’s strange because anxiety /panic attacks does give similar symptoms that Long Covid gives , e.g. shortness of breathe , tachycardia, chest pressure, dizziness, bad sleep . So since doctors only know these symptoms as anxiety they would brush it off as that . This is connected directly to Covid and what it has done to our nervous system. Could it be the hyper inflammatory response that causes the damage to the nervous system ??

Find a DN , naturopath, who does ozone treatment. They are using ozone infusions with great success. There are many in Phoenix doing this, and I keep one on a short list for urgent use. Best wishes, and kudos 👍 for self-EDUCATING, something a majority of sheeple avoid, then blame everyone else for their problems. There is absolutely grounds for charges of criminality and cover ups and malpractice and breaking of oaths to serve and protect patients, and more. But there also is no excuse for people not educating themselves in their health responsibilities, and blindly trust others.

Same issues with Shingles and long COVID. I’ve had Covid twice very mild symptoms June 2020 and June 2021. Shingles August 2020. I am pro vaccine I got both April and May to 2021. Both knocked me off my feet for five days. Record to stay strong. at times I really felt better. October began in sweating for no reason… Whether I was lying down middle of the night. Intermittent low-grade fever‘s body pain intense and headaches that nothing gets rid of… orthostatic hypotension when I stand up… Blood pressure goes down heart rate shoots up. Many flags in my blood test high cholesterol which I’ve never had, hi cholesterol high hemocrit, high hemoglobin, high granulocyted. My doctor says I’m fine. Lol. I had over 9 flags on my blood test which I’ve never had 1 flag prior! Had been able to do daily hour yoga walk 3 miles or swim 30 minutes… Now I can no longer do any of that.
I am trying to incorporate breath work and meditation… White walking anything to stay sane. The loss of strength scares me. I did have intolerance to hot shower… however that’s coming back… i’m trying to do hot cold shower intermittent to reduce swelling inflammation pain. Helps reset nervous system. I’ve had a history of autoimmune disease thyroid disease, Lyme disease and HHV6. I have factor five Leiden a blood disorder “ hyper Clotting”. which I believe is what fires up shingles Epstein bar virus. I eat cold water fish greens fruits take good quality vitamins minerals and amino acids. I used to like to drink a beer now and again. But my body will not let me have it… I either don’t have a taste for it or it just feels like the wrong thing when I take a drink. It’s sad… so many things I enjoyed that were my rituals were gone. Interesting used to be a coffee lover… it’s the one thing I’ve always loved since college and I’m 62. But my case for that has changed also… cannot drink coffee anymore… Taste different now.
My doctor of 25 years retired. My new doctor says I’m fine I need to work out more and eat better. What?
      Help.

One more thing back when I had first got corona virus. I was trying everything to stop from getting really sick. I was taking daily immune support vitamins. I had doubled up on it and I was drinking warm honey, I was going over bored with trying to fight the virus off. I keep thinking that maybe that had something to do with why I became a long hauler. I was a very healthy person before the virus and I didn’t get very sick at all. While I had the virus. I don’t know I just want to know why some of us became long haulers and some of us didn’t, thank you again for not giving up on us all!

I did similarly as you did: I was trying everything to stop from getting more sick. I was taking MANY immune support supplements. I had also doubled up on them... So I'm also thinking I might have gone over board trying to fight the virus, which was very important in early first phase (i.e. virus replicated phase, the first 3-7 days), but I continued doing that in the later phases - during and after the 2nd phase (the inflammatory phase, around Day 7-14), which was a mistake because during the inflammatory phase we should have tamped down the immune support, we should have been taken anti-inflammatory supplements instead of continued high doses of immune supporting supplements.
I have started taking these anti-inflammatory regime 2 weeks ago:
Quercetin + Vitamin C, Curcumin, , Boswellia, Pine Bark Extract, and high dose of DHA/EPA (Omega 3 fatty acids), and Serrapeptase (a proteolytic enzyme, taken on empty stomach), they are all powerful anti-inflammatory!! They're really amazing help, they work far better than the steriod medication my Doctor previously prescribed for me.
Now I'm going to add Bromelain, taken with Serrapeptase on empty stomach.

Really interesting about antigens in the gut. I've thought of myself as having escaped any real GI symptoms through this - but in fact, the initial infection came with a five week long total loss of appetite and difficulty eating much of anything. It had started to clear up before coming rushing back at my first big relapse at the two month mark. This was a first for me - usually my appetite could devour armies, boots and all. This explains it!

I had a mild/ moderate case of Covid- not hospitalized but felt bad for two full weeks-October 2020. Had elevated temp with GI symptoms, fatigue. After Covid have had inflammatory issues: interstitial cystitis, reactivated thyroiditis that lasted 7 +months, double vision , and Inflamation of artificial hip joint with elevated temp and post elevated temp for < 24 hhours with muscle/ joint pain in legs for 2+ months after returning to aquatic exercises. Hip aspiration was negative for bacteria but blood inflammatory markers were slightly elevated. This makes so much sense to me. I still have muscle aches in my legs. MDs just tell me it will eventually go away that there is nothing that I can take to hasten the recovery .

My cough last through August. Now in october, last weekend I had a bare bit of nausea, but the fatigue is the symptom still hanging on. In spite of that, I do feel healthy. To sum it up, healthily tired. The low battery charge applies to me. I wake with energy but doesn't last.

Very helpful. I had very serious Covid within that initial time frame (May 2020). None of the nasal pulmonary symptoms but delirium for eight days, and a headache not unlike Meningitis (had it twice). Unable to eat anything but fruit. Initially devastated with no stamina and a shot balance (disautonomia) No treatment at the time. Gradually improved but recently similar symptoms have returned, especially ataxia and bottomless fatigue and some suggestion of POTS. Managed to get some Ivermectin and took it for twelve days, and had four days of incredible recovery but, again, the symptoms have returned. I am convinced Dr Patterson's hypothesis is accurate, that this is due to persistent antigen expression= sub acute Covid recurring. I am also convinced that the initial Covid was somehow programmed to target whatever was the weakest 'system' in each recipient. In my case brain related, in others different co-morbidities, which accounted for the deaths of the obese, or disabled.

Is this interview absolutely awesome or what !!! I am pretty much fully recovered, so I have ignored the most recent updates. I would like to add that I had CFS when I was around 30 and then long haul now (when I am 60). I am now certain that they are both the same. I had the nausea symptoms (not cold/flu symptoms), April 2020 onset, exercise related relapses, arterial/cardiac inflammation symptoms. I did have diarrhea, but after that, I really did not have "gut" symptoms. I started feeling better before the vaccine, but after the vaccine, I definitely got better. I am not at full exercise pace yet, but I am getting back to it. The vaccine helped, but I can only guess at the mechanism. My theory, some people (long haulers) have a non-specific immune reaction to Covid, that works non-specifically attacking Covid as it would any "general" virus. The vaccine adds more specificity to the immune reaction and therefore provides that last push that is needed to prevent relapses. I am also certain that the arterial inflammation caused by Niacin (not the chemistry) has a role in "neutralizing" the effect of the monocytes. There is something about niacin that could be effective in all viral situations....next time I get a cold, I plan to try Niacin instead of vitamin C. NO EATING when taking niacin---for some reason the lipemia produced after eating neutralizes the effect of the niacin burn.
