      I'm just imagining that he actually throws away the spear into like, a trash can or a recycling bin and some worker at a trash plant just pulls it out.
      Worker: "Boss, we got something new."
      Boss: "What is it?"
      Worker: " A spear, Sir."

    I only recently discovered this channel, and I've been very impressed by the videos. I'm a new subscriber.
    That said, my one issue with some videos, like this one, is that the starting premise is: "How can I make a cheap spear if I absolutely needed one to survive, and only had a little bit of money?" but the spear, which is dirt cheap in raw supplies, is then crafted using power tools that you might not own, or specialty tools like the riveter that I do not own. I did like this video, but that's just a pet peeve that I've noticed in some similar videos.

    I think PVC could be made a lot more solid by inserting something in the middle of it. Maybe some dowel, or even some plaster mix or concrete.

    • @notpublic7878
      @notpublic7878 9 лет назад

      TheAussieStig30
      it'll increase weight depending on what you use, but that's actually a great idea
      you'd just need probably a quarter of a tub of plaster of paris or a dowel rod that's big enough.

    • @L337f33t

    • @VaultAndrew_Giraffe

      TheAussieStig30 makes it heavy and sorta defeats the purpose of pvc

    • @danielmuonio7043
      @danielmuonio7043 9 лет назад

      TheAussieStig30 A poplar dowel greatly increases the stiffness and strength. Most hardware should carry a size slightly larger than the inside diameter of 1/2' pvc. You can sand the rod down by hand and it will fit tightly inside without glue, also if the inside breaks, the broken pieces can be removes

    • @VaultAndrew_Giraffe
      @VaultAndrew_Giraffe 9 лет назад

      The dowel idea sounds good but I
      don't really like the idea of using concrete or plaster

    There is only one problem with these, the opponent can throw them back.. What about making some simple roman style throwing spears? They are spears where the tip breaks off after hitting something, leaving the opponent with only a stick. You can maybe make it so that the tip falls off after throwing them you are still able to put them together without too much effort.

      Or just coat the head with snake venom. You can't throw a spear back if your veins and arteries are bring destroyed from the inside, leading to a painful death due to internal bleeding

    • @PsylomeAlpha
      @PsylomeAlpha 9 лет назад

      ***** slight barbs (or just a serrated edge) and forgo the rivet and the blade would stick in the target. maybe (if you're using an angle grinder instead of a hacksaw) you could also cut a hole down the center of the blade to allow more bloodflow around the stuck blade.

    Pvc will not shatter that easy if you store it out of the sun. Sun light and heat dries out the resin in the pipe. When we plumb in new homes we are required to paint the pvc above the roof for this reason.

Thx in advance for the help and consideration.

  • @tjsogmc
    @tjsogmc 6 лет назад

    That is the bare essence of a survival weapon, making something from whatever is lying around. I have made spears from broom handles, PVC, metal pipes, etc with anything from sharpened metal bits to knapped glass bottles for spear tips. It's about whatever you can make work from whatever material you can find. The key is to know that you need to make a tool for yourself, then apply human skill to get it done.
    Even though we live in a modern industrial world, it's good to know ancient survival craft. You never know when you will be lost in the woods, or in a plane crash or something in which your very survival may depend on those skills. And if you never use those skills in a real world situation; who cares? Making primitive tools and practicing survival skills in fun!

  • @Simon-iv5xz

    Made a relativly cheap, but sturdy spear. Most of the value is in the work, which mostly involves the wrap, and cutting of the slot for the head. broom handle (2.40$), heavy-duty throwing knifes (Ca. 3$ a pop), 14 kg fishing line (7$), and some glue, which i just had laying around

    Hey +ZednoughtAlpha I saw in a video about primitive bows and arrows that some hunting points had sort of onesided edges. I mean like grind only the right edge all the way through, like on a butterknife, turn it around and then do it on the other right side. This is supposed to cause a spiral wound cavity. Well on something as heavy as a spear, it would probably just put more force on the blade and break the spear where they are attached.

  • @galetalon3133

    hey, crazy idea to make these a bit more combat reliable. Take some driveway markers (length of the spear internally), tape them together, shove them inside, then add a cap at the end. Its a few bucks more, but you can then actually handle somewhat solid strikes without completely devastating the PVC. In theory anyway.

    the shattering means that your opponent can't really block with them. (in the event that you missed, or jim pulled the spear out of bob's head) many projectiles in ancient times were designed to make reusing the projectile without a decent amount of work difficult. it's why arrows usually had their heads held on with friction and/or maybe a bit of glue or tree sap: so your enemy couldn't pick up any missed shots and easily loose them back at you.
    also, to add weight to the spear (since throwing weapons need SOME weight to penetrate, and I suspect these are a little too light on their own) you could throw spent batteries into the handles, and either screw another rivet or screw into them, or throw some glue down in there (though a pin is easier to make than glue)

    I know it's kinda of a crazy idea, but if you really must use it as some form of melee weapon, how about sticking some rebar down the middle of the pvc to strengthen it, and removing it when you are finished

    If you filled the empty space with sand and capped off the end that would provide more momentum energy on impact and possibly add structural rigidity to the shaft.

    Could you do a short video talking about your ear jewelry I do not know if I'm the only one interested but I am one person who is interested

    I wonder if you could add some metal to the forward third of the spear cheaply, like a shod quarterstaff-type design, to give them some staying power in close range? I mean even some hanger strap would be enough to give the PVC some rigidity, and the flex is what causes them to shatter. For that matter you could pour some urethane foam inside as well to give them some more strength, or pad them somehow.

    Hey Eli, I had an idea for you. You could do a build set called "Zednaught Hoplite". Just thought you might like that.

    Instead of using a wooden shaft for the normal spear(not the cheep ones) you could use the bottom of some metal blinds/shades/window cover and just fit the tip so it goes right in to the slot, it's durable and dont brake easy (if you get the right ones) thanks for reading my comment

    A way to make the spear stronger is by using a wood handle off something like a rake or shovel then just using the pvc as a connection point to the metal piece then use then do everything the same way by heating the pvc up putting of the handle and inserting the point and the screw. makes it much stronger and keeps the price and the work time down

    Would a potential work around the the sideways weak point be to shove a bunch of the highway markers or whatever it was called that you used as the core for your bow video's into the middle of the spear for increased strength? - btw, long time fan, love the content!!

    A cool idea I have is using some type of strong but light metal and having a 2 foot Handel and a elbow at the top. So it's sorta like a war hammer

    fill with melted foam and it'll take away the explosive trait of the pvc. but it'll also give it a little weight
