Stark: "People think i'm pretty strong and i'm a decent bluffer" Me: Sir i just saw you kill a dragon in less than a minute by yourself without even getting scratched
The fact that Stark is scared largely because he has no idea of his own strength is hilarious. Having Eisen's strength reference point doesn't really help your judgement.
the fact that eisen, a warrior who has literally fought some of the most powerful beings in this world, was frightened of stark is ... kind of mind blowing when you think of it, right?
@@boboyo3140 i think its the fact that he hit him by reflex. his body went flight or fight mode, which is why it's so crazy, but then again he could just be like that all the time idk lol
A really small detail i love about this chapter is the fact Eisen helped Stark finish the jumbo special despite his favourite food being "Sour grapes, the sourer the better"
13:06 just want to point out since you mentioned “he remembers her” that it’s been almost 30 years since Himmel died and the 10 year adventure was 50 years before that. Most humans they interacted with won’t still be alive unless they were children, like that one that flipped Frieren’s skirt. She’s more so known in a “historical” sense with most humans from stories.
I like to imagine it'd be something like seeing a young Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley, still with their iconic looks and young age, walking around today 😂 i.e. you may not have seen them in person in their prime, but you'd recognize them anyways if you saw them in person now
Yeah, Frieren needing 30 seconds to prepare a spell and kill the dragon was complete B.S. from her part, she totally played him like Heiter and Eisen played her. She not only didn't even bother to start preparing a spell as Stark fought it, but she even prevented Fern from firing off her own spell once the dragon hit the floor and Stark started freaking out because she was perfectly aware that it was already dead and that neither Fern nor Stark realized it was already dead.
The dragon sequence was animated by 6 of the greatest animators of all time: Keiichiro Watanabe, Shingo Yamashita, Chris, Tatsuya Yoshihara, Hironori Tanaka, and the goat himself - Yutaka Nakamura. I know Ben and Anna don't keep up with YT comments (for good reason) but for others watching the show with them - pay attention the quality of subtle movements. Especially fabric animation - it's astoundingly good in this show.
Props to the producers and director of Frieren. It clearly is a passion project, 3 years of meticulous production and they garnered all the best in the animation industry. Every aspect of the anime is almost perfect.
Just want you to know: The way they call Himmel the Hero is using the word “勇者” (yuushya) . The title of the opening song is also “勇者”, but they translated it into “Brave”. And I think in the world of this anime, 勇者 is like a name of a job or a position of a team, just like the priest, the warrior or the mage. So it’s more accurate to translate 勇者ヒンメル into “Himmel the Brave”. And the way they call “Stark, the hero of the village” is using the word “英雄” (eiyuu). It’s the word what “hero” exactly means. So, before Himmel defeated the Demon King, he was already a 勇者 (yuushya). After he defeated the Demon King, people say Himmel the Brave is the 英雄 (eiyuu).
Not exactly, both can be used to address "hero", just that "yuusha" is "brave/heroic person" and "eiyuu" is "legendary figure". Kanji for those are brave+someone and english+great-person respectively.
Pretty much right, but for additional info, 勇者 (Yuusha) always meant as a title/position for someone that designated to be one, a hero 英雄 (Eiyuu) basically means "Legend" something that people would know naturally and something that passed away from mouth to mouth
Yes, Yuusha is more closely translated as "the brave", yuu = brave, sha = suffix for an occupation, or a role, yuusha = the brave, the person whose role is to be brave, who stands up to protect others. Hero is smthing like Eiyuu, literally means hero in a heroic n legendary sense, with actual achievements n myths. So yes, you can think of Yuusha as a brave man at the beginning of the story, and Eiyuu as the hero he became after the end.
@@hunbi1875 no because that flashback is happening simultaneously with that action. When it starts and when it ends, stark is in the same place so no time has passed in reality. You remove that part and from start to finish - it was 66 seconds.
The best part about that dragon fight is that it's basically anime only. In the manga the whole fight takes few panels and takes place entirely on the ground. In general while manga has some very cool fights, they're never the focus and more of a background stuff, so the fact they went out of their way to go all out on **all** fight scenes in the show is amazing. They struck perfect balance between enhancing them and turning them into spectacle and keeping the core and flow of the fight itself intact and never going overboard with stretching it more than necessary.
Stark calling Fieren an "old hag" was hilarious and its too bad there wasn't a consequence we got to see. Really like how Himmel told Eisen that h'e'd rather have a ridiculous and fun adventure instead of a hard and painful one.
5:30 as music starts, the animation from the dragon getting its manicure to its defeat: 30 seconds (yes, not whole fight when he entered the dragon's range but from when the music starts until 5:52) One thing I like: Frieren has not met Stark before. At first, she simply believes her dear friend Eisen's words that "Stark is strong, a good warrior, is like him, etc". Then she saw the results of his practices.
I love the image of Stark and Fern on the wall, where half of it is Fern's side with only wall, the other half blue clear skies for Stark. It shows that she has a wall around her heart while he's open about his emotions and open to making connections.
The only thing you guys missed was that Stark's reason for not wasting time on some checkpoint was the exact same reason Fern desperately tried to learn magic a few years back. They both want(ed) to make it before their mentor dies. That's why Fern relates to him a bit here. I'm so glad you loved the fight sequence as much as I did, I watched it like five times when I saw the episode first, and then some more. But I never caught the scale flying off with Stark or the fur under dragon's head :O. The animators' idea to show dragon trying to shake off Stark and then taking off the ground from a "Gopro camera" pov placed right behind Stark was a brilliant one.
Stark is a warrior class with a signature weapon battle-axe. Himmel is the hero class (Yuusha) which I believe is identical with swordsman, cuz they always use swords in JRPG or MMO.
This song named Yuusha, was made for this story, namely for HImmel the brave. The lyrics is basically Frieren's POV abt Himmel, and how he changed her n the ppl he met
I was kind of hoping the dragon possessed speech and that they'd talk it out somehow, maybe leaving it to guard the village so Stark could go adventuring. I wouldn't be a good adventurer, perhaps. I'd probably get killed while hesitating to fight.
One theory i have is that by the time Frieren, Fern and Stark arrive to Aureole, Eisen's ghost is gonna be there with Himmel and Heiter, and just thinking that breaks my heart
I think my favorite scene this episode was right at the end, when they left the town in a parade and the shot of Frieren cut directly to her walking through the same door 80 years ago, but just with her old party 🥲 Btw, imo, the opening is a good song, it really grew on me. But Milets ending song is nothing short than a matserpiece, gets me every time.
we dont have enought information of who many ways Frieren had to deal with the dragon herself but she semms confident that Fern could kill it with hit and run chessy tatics.
You guys are doing god's work here, because when I was watching this the first time, I knew what the show was trying to tell me. But I didn't have it in me to listen. But now that the message has been said out loud, I guess I'll try to act on it. And you're the only reactors to go to such depth in discussion.

Lol loved the reaction ❤ you guys are the best ,this anime has some of the most hard hitting lines in all pf anime and great animation and action sequences
Stark's teacher, Eisen, is unimaginably strong. How strong? He got hit by a dragon's tail and was launched an incredible distance and when he hit the ground it left a crater. He was completely unharmed. Eisen's only reaction was basically "Dragons are pretty strong". And Eisen finds Stark's strength the be terrifying.
Wild to call Stark a tank after he solos an entire dragon. I mean, not that he isn't a tank, but he one-shot an experienced, large monster in his first battle. The man can swing.
Love your reactions some of the best Ive witnessed on youtube. Im just wondering if you speculating During the episode and over dialogue is an actual benefit seeing as you A) guess correct and spoil what is about to happen B) guess wrong and mess with the scenes immersion. This series in my experience presents a story perfectly without the need to guess what is bout to happen, why not just enjoy the ride. Big fan you two have an amazing talent for observing and sheading light on what is being revealed and your passion is really admirable.
If you want a great depiction of a classic DND style dragon, then I highly recommend “The Far Away Paladin.” Easily one of the best dragons in not only anime, but recent media as a whole.
Fern takes every opportunity to accuse Stark of being a pervert later on but what did she do here? She's the bigger hidden pervert than Stark and Frieren combined! 😅
well saying Himmel is DPS and Eisen a tanker does not really makes sense, since they can one hit an enemy and enemy can also one hit them, but yeah im sure Eisen is way tougher than Himmel
I'm a fan of your channel and enjoy watching your reaction videos, especially those related to Demon Slayer. However, in Frieren, I feel a sense of discomfort with the pronunciation of characters from English-speaking regions. Since I use German pronunciation in Japan, the English pronunciation might make me think, "Who is that?" I would appreciate it if you could pronounce character names in German for me.
