This Means War is actually about a soldier who has come home from war and is dealing with another war, one inside himself. He has come home to nothing. No home, no family, no friends, no hope... just demons. His war is now fighting against PTSD, depression, suicidal thoughts, as well as just trying to exist within civilian life as someone who has been stripped of humanity.
I recently thought about this song and I figured that it's probably not about a soldier at all. There's no actual war involved. You might think that it's about wars especially considering its heavy militaristic rythm and sound, but in reality- it's a song about all of us and our internal struggle. We all have dark days when we feel that we are alien and alone in this world and that nothing we do matters. It's up to us to fight our own war inside ourselves and figure out our purpose, pursue goals and people we love, and decide our future through our determination. But some of us sadly fail and never come out of the downward spiral, and suicide thoughts take over them in the end, which we see in the end of the song where Shadow sings that he sees the man ripping at his soul (talking about god obviously), or that he "can take it all away on any given day", refering to his life. That's at least how I see it.

@C&A DifferentReactions it was pretty awesome. I saw them back in New Mexico USA in 2014 I think? They were head lining the mayhem festival. I was breath taking. The stage was awesome with multiple screens, they had fire everywhere and sounded better than any studio recording.

guys, if u want a hint, i would say that all hail to the king songs are conected in some way... this means war, requiem, httk, heretic... are all songs about protests and they criticize a lot that illness for power, that speech of rights which kills so many people weekly... this is my fav album because all the songs are critical... and the ballads are just perfect. btw the police you've seen in the video are just frames of the deleted version of the videoclip they've recorded before... they decided to use the images they had in the videoclip - i guess because they were doing a dvd, this is bat country that actually never happened (nothing new, right, a7x? lol). and just to finish WE LATINS ARE THE BEST CROWD EVER, they feel so warmed with all our energy. especially here in brazil, some say we're unpolite, but we're just caring.

I'm surprised that not a single A7X fan picked up on when Callum said, "god damn", because they actually have a song from The Stage album titled "God Damn" lol. It's a short track from them, which is less than 4 minutes. I guess it makes sense since it was one of the singles from that album. It's still worth checking out. The official music video is them playing in front of a crowd. P.S. Although the end part of that song is very brief, don't click stop right away, because there's a pause in between.
You got confused about the song because the videoclip is messy. They would do a videoclip they have got filmed yet, I think telling some story... But they gave up and used live shows images... So they mixed it. You can check the old version (now, we call it alternative version hahahaha) of the clip in RUclips, I guess some Sevenfold fanpages uploaded it.

This song is quite a good proof that how much Metallica influences A7X as it was compared to Metallica's "Sad but True" quite a lot for similarities. I just love to see bands like A7X carries the torch in their own way :)

Sort of about your dark side (or alter ego in a way) taking control. The whole album Hail to the King is sort of a tribute to their influences but mainly Metallica’s classic 1991 Black Album. So the whole image and sound of Hail to the King is very similar to the black album.
