I don't own anything. All right goes to the Paramount+ Star Trek
I like how both Una and Kirk look around when the music starts, realizing what's about to happen before going with it.
And Una is self conscious that her words are rhyming
That was one of my favorite parts about this episode, everyone looking up in confusion and acknowledging that there's music coming from the void.
Anyone else think the two of them had a blast doing this? Also, love La'an's jealous and nervous look...
The cast said this was the best episode they filmed to season 2 it was their fav for sure !
@@Arfarf69 ... This episode is trash and has nothing to do with Star Trek .. it's an embarrassment to the Star Treks legacy.
@@happycamper3455A Strange Phenomenon making the crew of the Enterprise do crazy things seems pretty much like Star Trek to me
Definitely. There was an E interview a while ago with Paul & Rebecca where he said they got to do something super fun together this season so I'm pretty sure he meant this waltz number 😂👍👏
@@happycamper3455 your an embarrassment for being stuck in the past
Trek is about drama philosophy exploration . . . And stupidity. Sometimes you end up on the planet of the gangsters. Sometimes your captain turns into a 10-year-old. Sometimes it's a Vulcan baseball game. Sometimes there's coffee in the nebula. And sometimes it's a musical episode.
If you took away the stupid from Star Trek, it wouldn't be Star Trek anymore.
You left out the Mirror Universe. Nothing stupider than that. As a one-off in TOS, it was a lot of fun - but then they ruined it by bringing the ridiculous concept back again and again and again. Similarly, I loved this musical episode. It was joyous. And I sure hope it's the last one they ever do.
@@TheRealLaughingGravy They could still have Uhura singing and Spock playing the lute in the recreational lounge/bar like in TOS. Maybe they could be joined by La'an. Just make sure this doesn't devolve into Ally McBeal, however.
I had to think about which episodes you referenced: A Piece of the Action (TOS), Rascals (TNG) and Take Me Out to the Holosuite (DS9) abd The Cloud (VOY).
@@TheRealLaughingGravyThe Mirror Universe could be akin to Star Trek version of Game of Thrones.
And:
Sometimes a character's brain gets stolen.
Sometimes they LARP Robin Hood.
Or rob a casino
Or the captain's boyfriend malfunctions
Or they have to deal with a bone drinking creature
La'an just staring at them like they've both gone mad lol
That or she's just...wary of Una going on her territory 😉
😅
la'an thinking leave my man alone
@@FreakyTeethyeah haha 😂
The boy are mine
Paul! my dude!! he's such a good singer!!!!! he's just the best!
I love this bit, because it's exactly what a first act song in a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta would look and sound like!
One of my favorites from this episode.
"...and connect to your crew!"
... "Will do!"
And yet the TOS Kirk -- the OG Kirk -- kept his distance from his crew. He did show moments of friendliness and warmth to individual crew members, but only ever really unbent to Spock and/or McCoy.
@@robboyte1101 Sure, but that's as captain. The XO is by necessity closer to the crew than the captain. Connecting to one's crew probably doesn't mean you're everybody's best friend.
@@Nergalsama01 I get that. Will Riker is a good example of such a style. But Una is advising Jim to not be aloof and form connections with his crew. Both are behaviors that are learned and reinforced. Jim might discover that that may not be the best formula for making tough decisions (I present the SNW S2 cliffhanger as an example). The TOS OG Kirk understands this, and Shatner played him accordingly (I refer to the TOS episode "The Enemy Within" as the best exemplar). There's real-world arguments for both styles, but if the SNW creators are serious about making this a true prequel, Jim can't go down that path.
@@robboyte1101 I guess we'll see. Whenever the next season comes out.
@@Nergalsama01 Agreed. And, I'm glad to agreeing to disagree. 👍👌
I loved this song and gives background how Una trained Kirk which I love, and love how the crew just all watch them just dancing 😂
This episode was great but finding out Stefan Salvatore can sing was just so strange
his name is Paul Wesley
@@claire4215 ya, I know. But anytime I see him I just see Stefan. Tho I’m starting to like him as Kirk more than I liked Stefan.
Fr 😭
The part at 2:04 KILLS ME
Seeing them just suddenly start dancing like that completely out of the blue is just pure gold!
I love how, while some people are trepidatious about the singing and try to fight it, Una just goes with it and is quite happy about it.
SNW Has become a real gem, hasn't it. After next week, it may be a very long time before we see them again. :(
I have to say of all the series of Star Trek from original to next generartion, DS9 etc. for me Strange New Worlds and season 2 are so far the best of all time for me. Almost like a Star Trek renaissance while Star Wars is floundering. I say this as a fanboy of both Star Wars and Star Trek!
you think that SNW is better than DS9? Sir, I must ask, are you in any way high or suffering from the effects of a recent concussive injury?
@DavidCartmellDJCartmell I fully agree. I love both and was never fully able to get into DS9. Roddenberry would’ve liked SNW a lot more. It’s more Star Trek. Not saying DS9 is bad it’s just good. SNW is great
Season 1 was inconsistent, so maybe B+.
Season 2 is pretty consistently good. A.
I LOOOOOOOVED this episode and I love the way Paul plays Jim 🥰 and wow what a lovely voice!
Is strange New World’s seriously a musical tied into the episodes? If it is, this is awesome.
🥰🥰🥰
Yup! Season 2 Episode 9 "Subspace Rhapsody" is musical
a delightful episode... now imagine Shatner and Barrett performing that scene
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I thought that the crossover episode would be the best episode. But this episode is better. It's beautiful.🖖
Agree!! This was more interesting, I felt the hype for the crossover was overhype , this was the real episode of the season I think is the best
@@Arfarf69 I think Strange New Worlds makes up for everything. The series can only get better. 🖖
This episode is much superior than the lower decks crossover. Because this episode was more fun.
It's been the kind of season where after episode I was like "This was the best so far!", but then the next one comes along, does something completely different and I'm like "No, THIS was the best!" It's been a fantastic year for Trek so far.
Courtroom Episode, Time Travel, Human Spock, Crossover Episode, Klingon Ghandi, Musical Episode, all were good,.
The little "Ha-ha!" is too cute even if a lil goofy.
This made me so happy. I loved the whole episode but they really hit this one out of the park. Its so much fun to go back to TOS stuff after this and cast it all in the light of this too.
I saw Paul was talking abt him singing on Star Trek LET ME TELL YOU I HAVE NEVER RAN TO RUclips SO FAST
Star Trek + The Sound of Music 🕺💃
Oh I am glad they went full classic musical!
OMG this was freaking fantastic. I usually find stuff like this dorky, but they did it masterfully. I couldn’t get the smile off my face! 👍🏻
Not Stefan Salvatore singing. I fucking can't. 😂😂😂😂
The premise when I first heard it was off-putting. A Star Trek musical? But they pulled it off brilliantly.
I'm going to guess based on the comments, that many of the people saying this isn't Star Trek, "got into" Trek via Deep Space 9 when it got hyper-militarized (at least for Trek), and think that niche is what makes good Trek, when that was a single aspect of the Trek universe, not it singularly. This episode is in line with the batshit stuff that happened all the time on TOS, TAS, TNG, and VOY.
1:23 *Man in a Dress* alert. Man in a Dress alert!! Call the cops 👈👈
I had no idea Paul could sing, although he did do theatre. Cool
She's not bad, but he's got a great voice.
I would love to see how all of this would play out in a mirror universe! It would have to be a movie release.
*
Fitting for Una do have a song and dance routine that is very Gilbert and Sullivan
La'an: It should've been me, not her! It's not fair!
I am totally am getting Gilbert and Sullivan Movie wise Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) this episode confirmed the decision to buy SNW
Not the actor's fault, but I can't shake the feeling that he looks like a cross between Jim Carrey and Justin Beeber...
Doesn't help that Jim Carrey's did impressions of William Shatner's Cpt.Kirk and I keep getting reminded of it because of his likeness.
I love all of the songs of episode 8 🤣🤣🤣👍👏
not had a chance to watch this one let but I'm so looking forward to watching it
Back when professionals photographed motion pictures, the backgrounds were darker than the foreground (actors).
I loved this episode.
you'd never see chris pine's kirk do this
So Stefan Salvatore lived long enough to serve on a space ship? 😂
I found this number to be just there. It wasnt special.
The three main numbers were brilliant .
A)Spock , i am the ex. B) Chapel in the cafeteria and C) the final on the bridge
🎉 👍
I actually hated the last one, but loved every other one. Especially the first one, and this one.
Spock was definitely awesome.
For me it was A) Apologies B) I'm the X C) Klingons
This is a gorgeous show tune. Well arranged. Do you like musicals?
@@AndyCutright the whole thing was fine. It had very big brilliant scenes in it. Which the show should be regonized for.
Especially with the solo Spock number. That hit you in the gut.
@@godmodewu that Spock solo was raw. It had impact. It definitely didn't come off as goofy.
It had emotional weight, gravitas
So good
Paul could be great in a musical
Gilbert and Sullivan is more of a Picard/Worf/Data thing.
She literally sang a Pirates of The Penzance tune the first time she met Spock.
well the writers must have been wikipedia surfing
It is always her think since the Q&A Short Trek episode.
oh go sing its a british tar
It's funn,omg i love this 😂😂😂😂
I thought they would have juiced this up a little more, given Rebecca's star quality.
thought that was good cadets 🖖🏻
Anyone else low key disappointed that Kirk didn’t sing in Shatner style speak sing?
I'm a huge Star Trek fan, but musical Star Trek? It's just plain silly! 😅
I only found out about this episode from fade to black podcast if it’s good for jimmy then I might take a look
Did they actually sing themselves??? I thought it was a voice over
Yes they did. Paul said on his Instagram he did his own singing so they all did. And Celia & Christina are both professional singers.
So is Kirk a captain now since he mentioned he had a last 1st officer? So what's he doing in the Enterprise again as he should be a Lieutenant only until he got promoted to take over after Captain Pike. Anyway the only thing missing is the cartoon animals like in the Mary Poppins movie. Maybe some Gremlins running amok on the hallways or hanging from the ceilings since Tribbles haven't been discovered yet.
No. The Farragut has a first officer and Kirk serves with that officer, or the last one in this case. Its the same as a crewman saying 'my captain'.
Kirk is about to be promoted to the XO position aboard the Farragut. Kirk''s been busy training the crew member succeeding him in his former position, and now he's doing a little internship to learn "How to XO" from someone with experience.
@@Nergalsama01and honestly they picked a good candidate for him to learn from.
I wonder if someone will dub Kirk and Spock with the original actor's singing voices..........
Kirk is such a womanizer. He has a pregnant girlfriend. Yet, he flirted with La'an. "You owe me a drink."
He didn’t come off like that to me. He seems friendly… but when confronted with it he is honest. He didn’t lead La’an on.
@@shadowpsykie I did not see her as confrontational. I did see him as flirtatious. I am glad he was honest. We will leave it at that.
Yeah. Kirk was definitely being flirtatious. But that seems the norm for the guy rather than a serious attempt at a pick-up. He certainly applied the brakes fast when he realized how serious La'an was and ended it in a polite and honest fashion.
Whoever came up with this idea should absolutely 100% be fired. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.
Hello, brother
ok. star trek the musical.
How is the musical wedged into the plot? Are they infected by space TikTokrs from Dimension C-137?
It's Star Trek, and like any other Star Trek episode with a campy premise, it has a flimsy in universe explanation to justify it's campy premise.
I just described almost all of TOS btw
Broadway music makes you think of tiktok?
@@cm9241 Two words: Randy Rainbow
The Enterprise got Rogers and Hammerstein. The Klingons got TikTokers.
They explained it in the episode, the short version is they accidentally open a musical alternate reality, and it's just creeping it's way into the regular universe.
ok
Kirk??
Viewing the majority of the comments, I am indeed the 'odd man out' on this one, but I will be transparent and state that I had to watch (endure) this episode in six installments. The musical numbers were analogous to how the opening theme song for "Enterprise" took me "totally out of Star Trek." In my mind, during the start of EVERY musical number I'd hear a snippet from Monty Python and the Holy Grail "Stop that, stop that! You're not going to do a song while I'm here..." Here's the clip: ruclips.net/video/eLqyRS8z0-Y/видео.html
That is evil.
Character destruction the musical
This is season 8 crap for desperate ratings.
This is incredibly cringe
wow really?
OMG what has St become?
😮 no wonder this pretend ST is failing! Horrible writing, worse acting, and not entertaining at all 😮
Most bizarre episode ever... why do we call it Star Trek? No idea.
We call it Star Trek because it is Star Trek.
Terrible acting
So, they finally managed to mess up what had potential to become a canon show. I wonder, was it malice or boredom, when the „writer“ decided to go „glee“. Alas, I liked them all, but before it gets worse, and we all know that it will get worse, it’s time to „put an end to this trek through the stars“. There are far more interesting things out there to waste my time with, than this.
Your loss
Touch grass, a lot
Yet, here you are. After wasting your time watching the episode, now you want to waste more time by complaining about wasting your time.
I pity you.
Malice or boredom? What about joy or excitement?
Oh, come on. This show has to be the worst tv I've ever seen. Just terrible. I see & hear enough of this in 1 out of 3 comercials. All marketing Gen-Zers. Pay attention to commercials & see how they show all Zers as singing dancing fools. They are that, but still. Anyway, this episode put another black mark on a good but flawed series, Brave New Worlds. Oh, Strange New Worlds? Whatever.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it’s and obvious trash take.
@agamemnonn1 I couldn't finish the episode it was that bad.
Have you read Brave New World? Cause your comment makes no sense.
I was talking about the musical episode and comparing it to the tv & streaming comercials that seem to show one out of three ads as Gen-Zers dancing and singing no matter where they are. They are almost ad insulting as the California Raisins comercials of the 80s singing and dancing to soul songs.
@@tallmn1957 Ah. I haven’t seen a commercial in years.
So they sing now? Is this some disney stuff now?
Good thing I never watched this crap
Discovery is worse. all of the episodes.
*Discovery is just as good. All of the episodes.
Fixed it for you.
If I want to see Kirk, I will watch TOS and the TOS films.
Whine whine. characters in most dramatic pieces in history have and will be played by many different actors. It may be a shock to you, but this is no different.
@@chemicalhap I am not whining. I prefer Pike over the man flirting with La'an when his girlfriend is pregnant.
Cool. Allow younger generations to discover Trek & you can have TOS as your little treat.
I agree that they do need to back-off having Kirk on SNW so many times. But I thoroughly enjoy the actor's portrayal and Kirk's contributions to the story.
What brought you here, then?
It’s got the look but this is simply not Star Trek. I’m just so disappointed by this show.
Refuses to elaborate on how this isn't "star trek." I'm disappointed in your shit take.
How is this not Star Trek? Have you seen the older shows? Have you seen the episode where everyone gets a hand vrius that makes everyone super horny basically and Spock busts out crying while Kirk slaps the crap out of him?
What about when TNG crew are stuck inside Robin Hood?
This. Is. Star. Trek.
"Bah humbug! Where's the beige conference rooms? Where's the Shakespeare quotes? Where's the earl grey?"
Because you are not true trekkies
Ignore these humbugs. They fade away...same during TNG, DS9, Voyager and etc. Hell battlestar galactica had to go through this. They will be forgotten and ignored
Desecrating the corpse of Star Trek. Don’t look at it.
Well, go pout in your corner, then.
by far the worst episode of the entire series.
really? Have you checked if you're dead inside?
This is what happens when you let negativity and grifters rot your brain
Reeeeeeeeeeeee singing bad reeeeeeeeee!
Ignore these humbugs. They fade away...same during TNG, DS9, Voyager and etc. Hell battlestar galactica had to go through this. They will be forgotten and ignored
space exploration isn't just about politics, you may always encounter unexpected phenomena. This is a fun spin on star trek, I like it!!!
