  • So, you’ve decided to take the plunge into 3 rail O gauge trains. Whether you have dreams of a large basement empire or just a circle of track around the Christmas Tree, the hardest part is often just figuring out where and how to start.
For most of us in the hobby, the place to begin was with a starter set.
There are a number of new O gauge starter set options from Lionel Trains and Menards, but these can be pricey - $300 or more in most cases.
But there are also many second-hand starter sets available. The price is more attractive, usually coming in under $150 - and sometimes as low as $25 or so.

Very cool, I got the o scale bug from Marx but got some other Lionel products to go with it, marx runs circles in my village and Lionel does the loop around the floor track

Great video Mike! And the timing's good as well. With Christmas coming over the horizon it's not too early to think about a train set for under the tree, both for the purchase and to make sure it's working properly. Nobody wants the Christmas morning let-down of a train that doesn't work.
My favorite starter set? Easy, that's the MTH Norfolk & Western RailKing starter set with the "bantam" Class J steam engine, three passenger cars, and track and transformer. Unfortunately it's not made anymore BUT they DO show up at train shows in addition to other MTH starter sets that were it's contemporaries. Good ones to look out for!
    Thanks for posting!

Cool! My first set was my brother’s 2026 set, with freight and passenger cars. I wasn’t allowed to play with the 2343 ABA set, with the AMT passenger cars, until I was older. I still have all of his original stuff. An excellent video, as always.

Great info! I have 1 prewar Marx set and another from the 50's. The single reduction motors make me consider selling them from time to time as I use fastrack and have a couple switches. for now I added a separate loop inside the mainline to accommodate them. I mean the 90ish year old M10000 is just cool, rust n all.

Another excellent video. One point I would like to make, is modern Lionel transformers used 'Chopped sine' AC, which does not play as well with older locos, be they postwar, or postwar-style (Meaning MPC, some LTI, stuff that was mechanically similar to its postwar ancestors). Older Lionel transformers, as well as those by MTH and others, all use pure sine power, which is what classic trains need to work best. Lionel doesn't exactly go out announcing their stuff now puts out chopped sine, you almost got to ask the right question, and seek the answer to find that info.

I think that it's best to start with a new train and then try an old one; most old locomotives can be cantankerous. Price is a problem...
    That I hope to fix.

I’d say that you could let a child play with the first one unless said child aduses the loco&cars, from experience old Lionel locos are almost indestructible.
