I learned how to swim in high school because it was part of our PE course. One of the first things they teach you is a deadman's float. When o was a little kid there was a pool right next to the laundry room at our apartment complex and my grandma took me with her to do laundry and i wandered off with my bouncy ball playing like a little kid does and my ball happened to bounce into the pool, i leaned down over the pool to try n fish out my ball and i leaned too far and fell in. When I was a kid, everyone warned about not swimming for at least an hour after eating. I don't hear that any more. When I was 14 I went swimming with a friend (unsupervised) in a lake. No one was around. Both of my legs cramped up and I could not move them at all. I was always able to swim, so I was dog paddling with my arms, but telling my friend my legs didn't work. Her dad pulled up right then in the parking lot and my friend yelled to him that I was in trouble. He came right in and got me out. I don't know what causes leg cramps when swimming, but once you get them, you can't use your legs. I think the warning needs to be emphasized still. Like Smokey the Bear and forest fires.
Very good point. This can easily happen when someone is dehydrated too. So, it's very critical to have some type of self-floatation device always in the water, if you ask me.
Yeah, so…the idea that you should wait an hour after eating before swimming is a myth. The myth is based on the idea that eating increases blood flow to the stomach and intestines for digestion, which means there's less blood to supply oxygen and remove waste from muscles while swimming. However, the body has enough oxygen to supply both the stomach and muscles. Additionally, swimming doesn't inhibit blood flow to the stomach, and there's no scientific basis for the recommendation to wait. I’m glad you used your head and were able to make it to safety.
