When I first heard the legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius my life was changed forever. Up until that moment the only bass players I'd ever really heard were simply doubling up the guitar line or simply grooving in the background.
I first heard him playing on the tune 'Havana' by Weather report, and still to this day his performance on that recording blows my mind. I strongly urge you check it out after you've watched this lesson.
The thing that made Jaco Pastorius stand out for me was his 16th note style grooves. They were so rhythmically powerful but at the same time had a melodic depth that I hadn't heard any other bassists reach.
In this bass lesson I have constructed a groove that demonstrates exactly how to use these 16th note type grooves and most importantly how you can get them into your own playing vocabulary.

Even without a bass in hand, this was a pleasure to watch.
Hey Pat. My pleasure - it's great to see so many people enjoying and most of all - putting what I'm teaching into practice! have a great day :)
I've been lurking around your videos for several weeks now. I just wanted to let you know that your lessons have been making a great improvement in my playing. I've been enjoying them thoroughly. Keep up the good work. It's rare to find a person who is both a talented player AND a talented teacher.
I'd love to know the reason why 32 people didn't like it! Always seems incredible to me that someone offers something like this free of charge and then people complain or make daft comments! I play guitar but if bass was my main instrument I'd be on these lessons like a rash! Nice one Scott, just focus on the positives.
For the same reason we have vandals and vandalism, haters, rebels, people who like to throw a wrench and cause damage!
esqueça os haters. não vale a pena
Guitar players 🙄
It's just two jazz pickups. Thanks for watching! :)
For $25.00 I'm getting the most effective bass lessons ever and tons of them! Thanks Scott!
Hey Scott, thanks for the most valuable guidance. Restarting my bass journey after 25y of inactivity is not easy. I have watched some of your lessons during the last weeks and I enjoy them very much. So, I think we will be talking often from now on.
Cheers,
Dimitris
Thanks for uploading this lesson Scott. You make it sound so effortless. You make Jaco proud!
Scott, what can I say--you make your lessons look so easy!!! Love your technique and I gain so much insight with each of your lessons.....Thanks a million and keep informing us--loving it!!!!
Thx for doing it in bites, calling out the notes...and with the subtitles. That helps and confirms what we are learning.
Fantastic tutorial. Step-by-step lessons like this are extremely helpful for so many players. Thanks a million Scott!!!
Very nice staccato on your walking bass line Scott. And yes the "ghost notes" embellish the run with their classic funky, percussive groove. Bravo.
Great to hear you enjoyed it! :)
Oops lol! I'll go and change it... thanks for tuning in! :)
Thanks for watching man! :)
Scott is one of the best bass teachers/players on RUclips. You can learn so much from this guy!
You're a tremendous teacher, Scott. Even watching you play is a pleasure. Besides, the subject matter of Jaco is a pleasure, when someone can convey his technique so well. Thank You.
Heads up! How to get the classic 16th note funk groove into your vocabulary... Enjoy!... ruclips.net/video/TZBpy_8Xm_E/видео.html
Your videos are great! But I always need to increase my volume sound
to be able to listen it. D:
Hi Scott, new to your site. I've been playing for 23 years and your lesson's are giving me inspiration to become a better player...THANK YOU!!!!
Me and the guys I started learning music with use to go to local jazz clubs( when they were still around ), and listen to our music teachers jam for hours!! One night we listened to a jazz quartet with a xylophone player instead of guitarist. Bass, drums, keys, and xylophone... too cool for words!! Back in the day when underage kids could get into such places... around 1980!! Keep Bassin Scott... sounds great and brings back great memories!!!!
The best bass teacher on RUclips hands down. Awsome tone and very easy to follow. Thank you for showing me how great Jaco really was.
You are one of the FINEST teachers out there, man!
This is bloody brilliant!! You are like a bass wizard, with vast of knownledge about the bass and music theory, and this makes your lessons unique. Thank you for this lesson! I am also a great Jaco fan.
Cheers from Norway!
I composed it to be 'in the style of'. Thanks for watching man! :)

One of the best instructional videos from Scott. Thanks!
The following is no cheat it is my desire to articulate my respect for what Scott is doing or trying to do: I am a studied bass player, who took a pretty long break due to work. I recently joined SBL and I have to say that it is superb - go for scott, he really knows what (!) and how (!!) to teach - and I can guarantee you this: This is a rare combo!! If you take his advices seriously, you will become a bass player! I am really thankful for what he does.

You're selling the heck out of Overwater basses with that tone at 12:26! Such an epic quack! I want one.
I stumbled upon your channel while studying some Gospel players. My current touring GIG (6yrs) is with a Country band. Excellent groove and very understandable break down. Thank you for the time and effort, keep the video rolling. TDM
Thank you, Scott! This is a real treat for us poor musicians, who can't afford private teachers.
Keep up the great work! :)
awesome lesson! I was already on the bridge only on my j bass but didn't think of rolling down the tone knob all the way down - god does it make such a big difference!
Thanks so much for the lesson! Im trying to get into the Jaco sound and play some of his songs for my channel, it was very usefull in every way. Greetings and thanks from a fellow RUclipsr ;)

Man, you're the reason I'm into bass as much as I am now, keep it up!
Thanks for the vid. First time I've seen your channel. Totally in LOVE with your bass.
I was listening and playing along to 'Come On,Come Over' from Jaco's first album a while back and once that chorus part came along I became completely lost. This is exactly the sort of thing he plays on that part of the song, great lesson dude. Cheers!
Fantastic lesson. Must get it under my belt.

Great sound! Great touch! Wonderful groove!! I love Jaco too...
Really dig this. The Jaco sound is something I want to get, but haven't gotten around to shedding that 16th pattern. Thanks for this video!
Your intro-music sounds very much like something I used to play with one of my last bands about 10 years ago. I really like it...
Scott, you're the BEST MATE!
Thanks for all you do.

Hallo Scott!
Very nice to see you again!
the "ghost note effect" you've ever been demonstrated in this video:Funky Bass Groove Distribución - Lección con Scott Devine (L # 66)
I think it is the most important in terms of the groove ....
Thank you!
Great very good exercice, nice groove, thx Scott :)
Just wow. Excellent!

Awesome teachings Scott!!!
This is a great lesson, Scott! Thank you very nuch!
always love jaco licks
Send some sun and good weather over to the UK man ;)
Hey Scott, is this groove from a Jaco song or is it an original you made for the video?
@@thebro3377 i think he created it
You are the best! Thanks!
Thank you Scott.
You´re amazing. Your groove awesome. Thank you so for your videos!
Thanks for the fantastic lesson Scott! I'm getting it under my fingers. I'm really thankful for your videos. I caught something on the video that you didn't talk about; you dampen the A string with your thumb when you're not playing it. I found the A was ringing out when I didn't want it. The video allowed me to see what your right hand was doing. Thanks also for the encouragement to be patient.
Great lessons as always Scott! Thanks
Brilliant lesson 👏👏👏 thanks 👍
Amaizing lesson, many thanks
Great lesson, Scott! I love this groove! One bit of feedback: it's sometimes hard to figure out which finger is fretting a note. I'm thinking of spots like around the 5:27 mark. Especially when you're slowing a section down, I don't know if you could move your other fingers more obviously away from the frets to make the line easier to follow, but perhaps that would work?
Cheers man!
Great tutorial. Tks Scott.
Great playing, Scott. Very tasty groove.
really dig the little bit about using ghost notes to establish a certain feel - just a little side thing in the lesson, but really awesome tip
great lesson! really nice with the link to the backing track, great channel! subscribed
