This has always been one of my favorites because I can relate to it. Growing up there was always an older man who was not like your father or uncles, but as a boy you were drawn to them because they were different. They always seemed to have all the answers to life. Now when I think back to some of them I'm saddened because they are gone. The line " And on the day he lost his life that's all he had to lose" made me realize they lived life on their terms, not on how society thought they should. Makes me appreciate and admire them even more!
There were many “Curtis Leows.” I did a Lynyrd Skynyrd tour with Ronnie Van Zandt’s best friend from childhood, and he was there, security manager, Gene Odom. The part about them collecting soda bottles and take them to the store to get money is true. A lot of it is true, but there was just not one single person named Curtis, but there were many inspirations. One of their inspirations was a blue singer named.Son House.
It's a song abt never throwing ppl away. Someone may be thought of as worthless to ppl on the suface but if you look deeper you might be suprised what you find. Like my daddy used to tell me "everybody you've ever met is a genius at something, sometimes you've just got to look a bit harder."
Not all of the Southern rockers of the time would admit it, but the Blues was an integral part of their music......this is a great example of what L.S., the Allman Bros. and many more bands could do with a 'traditional' Blues number......soooo goood
my fav Skynard song. I've always pictured Curtis Lowe and Mr Bojangles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, working in a travelling minstral show.. I knew old men like them as a child in the 60's growing up in NorCal.

He did have a couple of people that were like Curtis Loew so it's sort of a combined of the influences to his music

@@NAIATHEDRAGON some, but my Great Grandpa lived from horse and buggy to man on the moon...he had some really amazing stories.
