Orwell is a reflection of your work ethic and your families pride from my view. The wheel is no big deal boss, no one is busting you chops. The truck is almost 40 years old and still doing it for you and your family. There is more there than meets the eye, I apologize if one is required. Why we are all different. If he was mine I would fix it. A day to sand blast and paint he deserves it. It is a m eye soar to your audience, goes with the territory of being a celebrity sir. It was not meant to be a personal criticism. No clue others mentioned it. Sorry. I know what I would do if he was mine, but he is not. Keep On Trucking Orwell and Crew!

The wheels aren't the important part, it's the tires ON the wheels that are important. I see the value of the Green APU, especially in Orwell, for all the reasons you mentioned. It maintains the batteries, and the temp of the engine block, all while keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, that way you can get proper rest in any weather. Keep up the good work Steve, Im enjoying your channel as always, and have a good day driver!

"Looks like it was factory built!" I thought the same thing when I saw the video of it being installed. The way those hoses neatly fit under the cab, and how tidy the unit looks on the side there, it's like it was meant to be on there. Kudos to the mechanics they have who installed it, they definitely know what they're doing and how to make it look factory added

If the Green APU, Auxiliary Power Unit, is a solid robust performer, functioning as you have described, with easy servicing that provides long dependable operations, it will serve Orwell and you, most magnificently! I, having eagerly watched this channel and its videos in full length for, (can't remember when I started), maybe 2 years now, do not question the righteous logic of the Green APU install. Do enjoy, Steve!

Roundabouts are suppose to be more efficient to keep traffic moving but the circumference of them are not ample enough for most tractor trailers And oversized as you do Steve I am not a fan of them but I like to have fun with them & freak out other drivers I will go around 4 or 5 times before staying on my route LOL !!!

The APU uses less than 1/5 of the fuel the Cat engine does. When you calculates the hours of operation, into the operating cost to run the truck, not counting the comfort factor, the APU will pay for its self in fuel savings in less than 2 years.
Cold weather starting performance using the APU is much easier on the engine than a cold -30F start temperature.

Well with winter and summer weather on the heals of you. You be using this thru out your route going north and south. So we will see how this work in real time.

One thing you will have to do when it get's really hot in the summertime, is install a electric fan on you radiator, to keep the temps down! I had a Double Eagle GenPac on my Freightliner and ran Vegas all the time, and had to do this, as it would get way too hot! I had just enough room between the grill and the front of the radiator to install a big automotive electric fan, wired to a toggle switch on my dash! Worked great, and kept the temps manageable.

Thanks for the video how an APU works. You did everything right with the installation of the APU. I don't know how important the second exhaust is to you, or whether you currently have losses in engine performance. However, I would remove the second exhaust for cost reasons, but leave the heat shield with the support rod. The second exhaust faces the wind and creates drag. And when not in use, there is no need to attach it. You can save on fuel costs because the truck's drag is reduced. In this way you drive more efficiently in the long term. The price of diesel fuel is not getting cheaper. Preserve the exhaust and place it dry and safe in the garage as a spare part.

I think its awesome you take time with the family! By the way I love the Green APU Illinois made and manufactured here etc.. I wish every truck came with one of those Green beasts!! lol Anyway I know you probably know what your doing etc and I am now back yard quarter backing a bit from the keyboard but I wouldn't be a good person to point out that spray foam insulating the interior of the truck might be worth while.. I have been seeing some RV'ers on youtube that have done similar but where this shines is in the extreme colder areas and the Extreme heat.. Basically the apu doesn't have to work as hard with the a/c unit etc etc and you get the drift.. Also supposedly it helps knock down some of the in cabin noise which in your cabin you do have a lot of noise although its cool sounding I am sure it gets old after awhile. Just a thought love the channel The nearest guys around me that do spray foam is in Effingham IL Thats a few miles north of me lol but anyway keep up the amazing content! I love blogger style content see I am disabled and have a ton of medical problems and I love to sit back and watch and learn from everyone. Safe travels and until next time!

hope you enjoying that apu I personally like the GoGreen Apu out of PA it's a little bigger but it has the same Kubota engine as the Green Apu the only difference is that the Condenser and radiator are at the back of the unit under the frame of the truck where it's bolted too the only thing mounted to the back of the cab is a small coolant tank since the GoGreen Apu has an independent cooling system so if you blow a coolant hose on the main engine you can stay warm or cool by running the apu the main engine is kept warm by Block heater since the GoGreen Apu comes with a 5k power generator that runs your appliances in the truck also has battery monitor controls versus the Green Apu if you blow a coolant line or get hit by a deer and your radiator is leaking you can't run the Apu since the coolant system is one but Green Apus are still nice APUs

Hooking your exhaust stack back up should not be too hard to do. I recently installed exhaust stacks on a newer 389 that had the bottom dumping exhaust and on those trucks everyone runs dummy stacks and they purchase truck with that type of exhaust so the cab and steps can be symmetrical from side to side. I built a stainless steel mandrel bent and pie cut exhaust system from the dpf back and was able to build functional exhaust stacks.

Greetings fellow cheese head. This truck sounds soooo good ! The beginning where you pull out and hook up to the low boy. Sounded like childhood. That and the look.
New cabovers in Europe are a completely different animal, but these older American ones are sort of the semi truck equivalent of having a quirky European sports car. Personally, I found cabovers to be really cozy, but what a pain in the winter. Regardless of what the weather is though, just leave your shoes or boots in the footwell and your truck stays pretty clean.
Aside from that, it's kind of what you dream of as a young boy, right ? A fort that you get to crawl around in and drive a semi all at the same time. It feels just like that.
My first cabover ride was a brand new, fully loaded, largest factory bunk, Ford CLT 9000 with the air ride cab and suspension. Graphics, intake, exhaust, trim and aero, stereo, etc. It might have been the special edition they had. Don't remember the year, but it was one of the last couple years. 90 or 91.
Went halfway across the country and back. It was awesome. Plus the family friend I went with got his hotels paid for the company, so I got to sleep in the truck the whole time. Epic. By the time I drove years later, I was spoiled by the "ultra loft" or "super sleeper" type cabs that you can play half court basketball in. But man those cabovers are friggin fun.

At least from what I can see, most of the traffic circles up there are big enough for a semi to easily navigate, unlike how ohio has been building them lately! Ohio loves to put sharp curbs tight to the circle. Most the time I have to hop the trailer onto the center island to keep from cutting a trailer tire on the outside curbs. 🤦‍♂️

My wife and I have enjoyed the videos of Orwell for some time now....APU at last! Vicarious thrills considering a career I never considered, but likely would have reall enjoyed Steve. I feel we share some roots growing up in PA, having lived in Jersey, and served in the usaf...Random thought...how much HP are you losing with just one exhaust?

Steve look into an appointment with shock therapy while you’re in glamis, either in the dunes for halloween or at their shop in Phoenix when you go through there.

I have spoken to them. Planning on sending them the shocks or stopping there on my way through.

I am a strong believer in the apu's, and turned my truck off at every opportunity - I always got my fuel bonus

People don't understand how hot it gets in those trucks in the summertime and how cold in the winter time they didn't put a good heater and air conditioning in them near them cabovers are the older trucks I know this because I drove myself and I can tell you can switch your ass off and freeze your ass off I can understand why you got the APU
