Sam, you do not perceive yourself the way you occur for other people. None of us do! I recently went to my 40th high school reunion, and had my entire memory of those days rewritten by two off-hand comments by two different individuals who had been tangential to my friend group. One remembered me as "the funny one" that he enjoyed being around because I could reliably make him laugh, and the other confided in my plus one that I was the guy who invented making it cool to be a nerd. I never realized I was so well regarded. YOU are so much better regarded than you realize.

Anyone who actually spent enough time with me to get to know me were normally cool with me later. But our school was large. Large enough that it was impossible to spend time enough with everyone.
