No matter how much more difficult tumbling becomes these days, I cannot imagine overall execution and presentation EVER getting any better than this. Still stunningly beautiful all these years later.
Boguinskaia's floor routine is very Avant-Garde (in other words experimental yet innovative)... Everything just fits together perfectly...dance and tumbling. No other gymnast would be able to do this routine, this was Boguinskaia at her very best. And that is why this is surely the most famous women's floor routine of all time....
I agree that it's put together well, and I love the tumbling, but the routine is tacky. Won't say more because it's Boginskaya. I remember her. She was amazing.
I love Boginskaya's performances. My favorite floor routine of hers was from 1992 in Barcelona to music by the Gypsy Kings. Of course, she has clear deductions that would be taken today. Her chest was very low on the full-in. In the past, even hops and low chests got tens.
When I went to Woodward she was one of the visiting pros and coached us on beam and floor. Her warm ups were so sassy and she made us "shimmy" and "look around for all the boys" lol gotta love her.
Such a classic. This was the time when little girls dominated the sport. Bogi for the first time presented a routine that brought out the sensuality of a young woman. Her moves simply lures you into her charm to a mersmerizing effect. No one saw gymnastics this way til the Fiesta routine came.
When i saw her perform her perfect 10 I couldn`t stop watching. I played it over en over again. I was in love with the bela- russian swan Svet-SWAN-a Boginskaya til today
Indeed, in order to appreciate the choreography of this routine you must have dance culture. I can't imagine any other gymnast to pull it off the way Svetlana does, it takes an accomplished dancer with great musicality to show off the beauty and charm of the unique choreography. And last but not least, her heavanly body makes any move look special.
Seriously one of the most beautiful gymnasts in this era of the sport. And she’s still a beautiful lady today! She will always be one of my favorites of all time!!
I had watched this performance live on TV. Almost thirty years passed now. The figures, her serious face, the music... I still remember everything so clearly. We should cherish every moment we live. Time flies... Literally...
I had quite the crush on Svetlana back in the day. Such a unique face! And THOSE EYES! 😳 Looking back now...she's like this wonderful mashup of Jennifer Lawrence, Rebecca DeMornae and Tracie Lordes. JUST WOW! 🥰🤩😍😭❤️
Art. This was back when gymnastics was artistic and beautiful, unlike floor routines of today, where elegance has been replaced by stripper moves in between power tumbling passes. I’ll take THIS over modern gymnastics any time.
This is stuck on my mind since way back when. Beautiful, simply beautiful. 🌝 BTW, she is "dancing" to the italian song "Festa" popularized by Raffaella Carra who passed away on July 5, 2021. 🎵🎶🎵
Raffaella Carra “Fiesta.” Only someone with the artistic level of Boginskaya could turn it out to a tune like this. She’s unmatched and remains the reigning queen when it comes to her artistic talent.
my God, i love this woman! amazing. so beautiful. this kind of artistry doesn't exist anymore. she's incomparable. gorgeous lines, incredible dancer... everything. i could watch this routine over & over & never get bored. OUTSTANDING! perfect.
i went to FlipFest fall gymnastics camp and she was my clinician for dance. she is so nice and helps me so much. i’m so glad i got the experience to work with this amazing gymnast. her routine in this video also flowed so well and her skills are incredible and her form. Thank u so much Svetlana if u see this, u helped me so much and i really enjoyed they experience. again thank u for spending ur time to work with me and so many others. ur so inspiring and i hope u continue to come to FlipFest to coach me and others. 💙💙
On "gymnastics greatest stars" they said Svetlana's coach had committed suicide around this time. She channeled all of her emotion and intensity into her dance and this performance.
3. the dance moves in hands, torso and legs were inspired in Nijiski, the great russian dancer/coreographer..the details in tempo, speed and fingers were great. even the tumbling was in timing with the music. I have being a gymnastics fan for the last 30 years, and was involved in this sport as a women's floor specialist both coreo & tumbling until 2.002 and had the chance to work with a lot of european trainers and coaches.
6ft WOW you have flawed perception there. She was 5'2. Gymnastics has progressed a huge amount, not neccessarily for the better and artistry has taken a hit. Certainly almost all of the difficult moves performed today were invented in the 80's and 90's. But even so, gymnastics today is still incredible to watch.
Я в восхищении , Светлана! Вот это я понимаю - мастерство 7 звезд. Яркая и блестящая как дмитрий Хворостовский на оперной сцене! Долгих Вам лет и крепкого здоровья, с искренним уважением к Вам!
Always loved her intensity and commitment to her routines. She really stood out for all the right reasons. Her floor routines were always very unique. ❤
A lovely routine with her unique style of choreography. Thank you for this video. (These were also the years when leotards were more modestly cut in the leg area).
@MrMartinportnoy: Exactly! I really miss the days when the floor exercise was not just about tumbling (and checking off elements), but actually involved a performance. This is one of those routines that I'll never forget because there was such a strong emotional impact and connection there. She put a spell over the entire audience (and yes, I'm sure her stunning beauty didn't hurt) ;)
Between the two queen Svetlana, I really think Boginskaya is better than Khorkina in terms of difficulty, flexibility , creativity, poise and artistry when they were on the beam..
i always liked the fact that she always had the artistic side to her gymnastics.Difficulty aside alot of the current gymnasts could learn a thing or two through these clips.
This has to be one of the most iconic gymnastic's routines ever. It's featured in every documentary about gymnastics I've seen. Remember too, less than a year before this, her coach (and mother figure) committed suicide. So the music, and her facial expressions, are almost haunting, in my opinion.
Yes, she did. She earned 10s on the vault and floor in the AA, on the bars in the Team, and went on to score a ten in the EFs on the beam the next year at the European Championships.
love this routine! I always like the avant garde routines that no one else could pull off. I get how this may not be someone's preference or style, but I love the risk she takes in her choreo.
HOPE EVERYBODY READ THIS NEXT (please forgive me for the long explanation but it's neeeded.) There are a lot of comments saying "WEIRD"but it's because they can't understand the meaning of it. 1: it's difficult to get it if you're not european, the song it's call FIESTA, by Rafaella Carra..one of the greatest Italian singer divas ever..original song it's in spanish!
It seems the posters here who "don't get this" or call the choreography "cheezy" are very young and can't appreciate originality anymore (since all floor routines now look pretty much the same, and have no dance, or very bad dance). This is a classic number. Do you think she would have gotten that audience reaction (and won gold) if the dance movements were "stupid" and the music was "awful?" Come on people.
I love her twisting and the ending. And IDK, the choreography reminds me of contemporary dance today - some people like it, some people don't. Whatever your opinion, it's unique, interesting (for better or worse) and she performs it beautifully. One of the best gymnasts ever!
Even after so many years, this choreography still looks stunning modern for me. Her strong personal style and beautiful execution are truly a joy to watch. I guess she must have also faced some questioning remarks then, glad her commitments and insistence triumphed.
Except for the tumblin floor exercise is boring to watch but Svetlana kept your attention and was fun and original. How can anyone find fault with this world class athlete? She was one of the very best.
@fatFRIESareAWESOME In an IG interview she said that she had felt very wretched when winning the '89 Worlds, because her all-life coach was dead, and she had been trained by a very young coach with whom she had quarrelled shortly before the '89 Worlds. She said she was practically alone throughout these championships and she had noone to share her happines when she stood on the medal stand. I still remember the IG photo she looked so miserable...
I like it that people can be turned off by her routine. It's very unusual and since she does it with a very straight and serious face, you tend to think that she takes herself very seriously. But it looks more like deadpan humor to me. The music is a bit cheap and I wish he had chose something more avant-garde, electronic music like Kraftwerk, it would have suited her. Regardless of what people thin of this routine, I'm mesmerized by this girl's beauty and attitude. Imperial and impenetrable.
I would never profess to know anything about gymnastics and though I appreciate the obvious skill, as a man I admit that I have found certain women gymnasts better because they are attractive to me. I remember seeing Svetlana Boginskaya and just thinking she was stunning. Something about her eyes and obviously incredible body. She reminded me of Ludmilla Tourishceva-the Russian gymnast from the 70's. She rarely-VERY rarely smiled but her skill and performances were stunning. Both are underrated.
Sadly, in this era of gymnastice where true perfection means true perfection. ..so many deductions would have been taken for the leg separations and the cowboyed legs.... But..this was perfect! ! They are ruining the beauty of this sport with D D D and D scores, leaving little time and space for such artistry and beautiful dancing elements..... its a shame!!!! (She runs a gym right outside of NYC and it welcoming belorussian gymnasts to come and train for free...she is amazing)
Geauxcht I agree and would add that It was virtually unheard of back then for a Soviet gymnast to lack grace and elegance but in my opinion Boginskaya had neither unfortunately !!!
Adore beautiful toe point and expressive and delicaite arms and hands, thank God for the Russian and Chinese gymnasts of nowadays for still showing this, if we have to look at "champions " llike G. Douglas and A.Raisman on beam and floor for artistic satisfaction, poor us.....
You can just see all the emotion... facial expression... the soviets were always so good at using facial expression to 'enhance' to mood of the routine
2. the dance moves had to do with the story within the song..the lyrics, at that particular time EVERYBODY sang the song in their head at the arena event. that was part of the succes! (more explanations to come..)
@TheBourgas1 Yeah, I always thouoght she had a more womanly shape than gymnasts typically do, and she used it to her advantage. Even when she's running she somehow makes it look georgeous and graceful.
@yangbofan That's just it: she was tall, but instead of letting it be a disadvantage, she made it her own, and chose passes/music/elements that reflected that. She was also remarkably consistent, overcame the tragic death of her mother-like coach, and had incredible staying power: among many things, being one of the very few to qualify for three Olympic games. Preference is one thing, but if you can't appreciate why that's considered GREAT, then it's by willful ignorance-- and nothing more.

@@RS-be7iy That routine was far from tacky...although..I have to say I did not care for the music.
@@RS-be7iy the nose-thumb move at about 1:03 was funny. :)
Thats the reason why Rafaella is on the background 😍🥰
Gran ejercicio de suelo.
One of the few 10's I can agree with from the judges. I love this routine. A LOT!
I love Boginskaya's performances. My favorite floor routine of hers was from 1992 in Barcelona to music by the Gypsy Kings. Of course, she has clear deductions that would be taken today. Her chest was very low on the full-in. In the past, even hops and low chests got tens.
She was such a terrific dancer...in my heart there will never be one like her again.
When I went to Woodward she was one of the visiting pros and coached us on beam and floor. Her warm ups were so sassy and she made us "shimmy" and "look around for all the boys" lol gotta love her.
mckenzie Q She went to IGC and made us do the same thing!!! She's so sassy lol
Whoa so many IGC people lol.. yeah that’s true, her warmups are so “herself” if that makes sense
Hahahahahhahahahahahhaha yes
That would be a seriously wonderful experience.
Such a classic. This was the time when little girls dominated the sport. Bogi for the first time presented a routine that brought out the sensuality of a young woman. Her moves simply lures you into her charm to a mersmerizing effect. No one saw gymnastics this way til the Fiesta routine came.

Every move is isolated and executed to perfection..
She had me with that very first death glare. :)
She was serving face like NO OTHER. MY QUEEN!!
@Kyllian Olfur OK mawma. Seriously though, she was serving face. I don't know how else to put it🤷♂️
yezz
Definitely.
"La Boginskaya" was always my inspiration. She was the most graceful gymnast the sport has ever seen.
You should also see Nadia Comaneci. She was as well.
She's shaped like a goddess, and performs like one. Love her forever!
I had watched this performance live on TV. Almost thirty years passed now. The figures, her serious face, the music... I still remember everything so clearly. We should cherish every moment we live. Time flies... Literally...

Also, supermodel Claudia Shiffer.
Art. This was back when gymnastics was artistic and beautiful, unlike floor routines of today, where elegance has been replaced by stripper moves in between power tumbling passes. I’ll take THIS over modern gymnastics any time.
I love the weirdness of the dance! It's avant garde and interesting and cool. She was really special on floor.
This is stuck on my mind since way back when. Beautiful, simply beautiful. 🌝
BTW, she is "dancing" to the italian song "Festa" popularized by Raffaella Carra who passed away on July 5, 2021. 🎵🎶🎵
Awesome choreography and dance! A well deserved 10! Perfection!
Raffaella Carra “Fiesta.”

The Goddess of Gymnastics!
So elegant: the Cyd Charisse of the gymnastics world!
I was in love with her as a child watching the Olympics! I remembered her name after all these years and finally goggled it.
One of my fav gymnasts all time!
I love my BOOGII.. She is sweet and humble an so talented!!!!

Music is "Fiesta" by Raffaella Carra
On "gymnastics greatest stars" they said Svetlana's coach had committed suicide around this time. She channeled all of her emotion and intensity into her dance and this performance.
The VERY BEST womens floor routine EVER!!! Elegance, control and execution!
The Russian style of choreography is just unmatched ❣❣❣Just sayin'💜💜💜💜💜💜
The double turn at the end always drives me over the top.
i met svetlana at my meet yesterday she is a coach!! she is so nice!!
Bravo!!!, consistent , clean, ...just beautiful.
Boguinskaia is by far the BEST women's gymnast in terms of technique....something similar to Joan Sutherland's supreme voice technique in opera....
3. the dance moves in hands, torso and legs were inspired in Nijiski, the great russian dancer/coreographer..the details in tempo, speed and fingers were great. even the tumbling was in timing with the music.

She was by far the best of the best, a real Goddess!
weird choreography but I still think of her as the most beautiful gymnast I've seen in my lifetime
Svetlana reminded me of a swan..So graceful and beautiful...one of my favorite gymnasts.
In a Gymcastic podcast interview, Svetlana said that the final pose with her hand stretched out was a gesture that said, “Give me 10!” It worked.

The choreography is great! I love the pointed toe during her hurdles too.
I remeber when I saw this gem for the first time on the WC , I was in total owe and admiration, what a mastery, what a performance!
Yes I agree this is modern art!!!!! so creative and forward thinking!!!
wow! what a way of movement! i can't describe it.. it look so smooth and soft! like a feather!..
Hubba, Hubba Svetlana !!! No wonder you were called "THE GODDESS OF GYMNASTICS." You had me mesmerized the whole time.
Angel. Demon. Everything.

She rarely smiles.. but she’s still so good . It’s like she totally comes alive out there.
One word ELEGANCE!!!!!!
i love her air guitars HAHA YOU GO BOGI
Wowza perfect in every way
Fantastic
She looks like Jenn Lawrence
For real!!! Especially in 1992 Barcelona games in VT EF. Where she wears what some ppl think as a "women leotard". Which I love .
J Law looks like her you mean! Svetlana made a name for herself much earlier.
Does anyone know who choreographed this routine. Bogi meant business at these chips. I wish Silivas would have won finally but Bogi was so beautiful
Thank you. That's why I'm glad they changed it. I like how they now reward (and punish) for both execution and artistry.
che fluidità,che bravura
I love her twisting and the ending. And IDK, the choreography reminds me of contemporary dance today - some people like it, some people don't. Whatever your opinion, it's unique, interesting (for better or worse) and she performs it beautifully. One of the best gymnasts ever!

Kraftwerk would be awesome music on floor. Svetlana's movements are quite abstract, but really suit her.

Beautiful routine and very innovative. I wouldn't mind seeing those dance moves today!
I remember watching her on tv she was very very 👍 good

Joann Hilton She played an air guitar... how is that "artistry"
Geauxcht because it just is
Geauxcht I agree and would add that It was virtually unheard of back then for a Soviet gymnast to lack grace and elegance but in my opinion Boginskaya had neither unfortunately !!!
Joann Hilton I love Boginskaya. But you did not noticed that her tucked double back was very cowboyed? Nadia's double back in 1976 was far cleaner.
Vette gaddia Nadia did a double back on floor??? Um no . That was Nellie Kim. Nadia opened up with a double twist in the 1976 Montreal games.

They can duplicate the dance but not Svetlana ❤️👍

I met her at my gymnastics state meet!
this girl wrote the history of the sport again!
久しぶりに観ました!素晴らしい演技です。女子体操は美しさ華麗さが無くなっては意味がありません。ボギンスカヤ流石です。
some90's and 00's gymnasts are are famous now as some of the best gymnasts ever. Svetlana Khorkina is a big, big name. D:
Thanks! That is some very interesting stuff to watch.
Amazing even to this day!!
@TheBourgas1 Yeah, I always thouoght she had a more womanly shape than gymnasts typically do, and she used it to her advantage. Even when she's running she somehow makes it look georgeous and graceful.

respect from the judges. Yeah today gymnastics is way different. 92 was her best routine and at the europeans in 1996.
At least it much better that artistic gymnastic nowadays...
Mmmhmm. Only few gymnasts in the elite today actually have intersting choreo or are even in sync to the music.
BOGINSKAYA Y KOURKINA FUERON LAS DOS ULTIMAS GRANDES GYMNASTAS DE RUSSIA AHORA MUSTAFINA ES QUIEN DOMINA GRANDIOSAS TODAS ELLAS
