    In the mid-west with its fertile soil, cover might be 12-15 feet tall and thick. My biggest problem hunting without a dog is finding a down bird in that kind of cover. Really no problem getting some birds up, it's finding them without a dog.

    First time hunting pheasant this year. First trip, no luck, second time, I shot two. Both trip, no dogs, just a lot of field walking on the first day, and nothing came out. Second day, I met a hunter with a dog, and he told me if you don’t have a dog, stick close to the channel where there’s water, they typically stay in there, and he was right, I shot 2 pheasant on the second day, both of they flew out of the water channels.

      Any type of water can be great for pheasants! Typically water will encourage thick cover to grow around it which birds like, plus they can get a drink whenever they feel the need. Im glad you got into some birds on your first hunts!

    New to pheasant hunting here, me and my buddy just got our first one today attempting to rabbit hunt here in SW Ohio and now here I am deep diving learning more about it, do you ever do any calls or anything to locate them or just strictly try to spot or flush them out? TIA!

      @NortheastOutdoorsZL  Месяц назад

      Ive been wondering about calls myself recently since you’ll hear them crowing every so often. I’d bet they’d work well if you could get a bird a vocalize back to you!

    Great pointers, but if possible find a friend with a good dog.

    Good information. I'm glad you're getting out there, but you need a mentor, man. Ground swatting is not ethical, nor is it good form and practice for newer hunters who may hopefully be able to get out with groups and maybe even dogs one day. Other than that, great info about knowing the areas to go and what to look for as far as productive cover.

    Why are you shooting hen pheasants?

    • @NortheastOutdoorsZL
      @NortheastOutdoorsZL  Месяц назад +4

      In MA they’re stocked and there’s no regulation on gender, just a 2 bird limit. We don’t have any wild birds here.
