  • This organic chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into naming organic compounds. It explains how to write the IUPAC nomenclature of alkanes.     Follow the IUPAC nomenclatue in the case that have 2 structures of isomer with the same number and the same subtitution of cacbon on the main chain, we prefer to choose the numbering method for subtitution that has the smaller position on the main chain. "The 4-ethyl..." is my opinion.

    In the last example, seeing as the ethyl group needs to come before the dimethyl group because of alphabetisation, why then do we not give ethyl a lower number by reading right to left which would make it 3-ethyl-5,5-dimethylhexane?
    Essentially I’m trying to figure out the priority order and it seems to be that the overall number value comes first even if it means the name has numbers in descending order because of how alphabetisation works
