Breathtaking. I wish Davinci Resolve would take ProResRaw, but alas...
Absolutely beautiful footage, cut together really nicely without flash or nonsense. Loved it! Was looking to see what the S5 and Ninja V might produce, this was a wonderful example!
Thanks, I’m glad you like it.
That was so pleasant. Great editing and focus pulls
Amazing quality and cinematic, I love it 😍🥰😍🥰
Wow, this footage looks amazing. Great job. Also, the image quality is out of this world. I just got the s5 and I'm learning what it can do hence why I'm here watching your video. This looks like a Hollywood film. Great compositions.
Beautiful! Lovely video, Lorenz!
Looks just like a good indie film
Excellent image and colors! Now you make me consider of buying the atomos !😊
Awesome🎉Thank You
It looks soooooooo good 😟😵💫
This looks like a movie, good work man.
Thanks, Josip! I'm always amazed by what aspect ratio, composition, and grading can do for you…
I really like the sensor on the S5, it's not too sharp looking so it gives you that softer look, really pleasing to the eye.
so nice! do you feel a big difference between ProRes 10 and 12 bit raw? Is it worth buying an external screen because of the quality?
Resolution-wise (5.9K is amazing for reframing shots) and in terms of latitude it brings to color grading - yes absolutely!
However, you really need to consider the massive file-sizes for your own workflow. Everything gets sooo huge very fast! So, is it worth it? It depends…when disk-space is no factor at all, that’s very good for starters. When trying to match many different cameras, I think it’s a huge benefit. When working in run and gun scenarios where properly setting white balance is not always possible, again, go for it.
But to be honest, I haven’t used ProRes RAW for any of my commercial shoots so far. If you mainly produce for web (as I do), establishing a proper ProRes RAW workflow might be a bit of an overkill. If you produce for the big screen or broadcasting, it might pay off more.
In any case, I didn’t buy the Atomos Ninja V only as a recording device. It still is a very good display!
0:11 Very Cinematic Look
please share some raw sample footage
Thanks for your interest! You mean other raw footage different from the footage in this video? Or raw footage ungraded?
Sorry brother! Great video! I have a question, how you grade the color, in davinci? And how? You convert?
Thanks
Thanks, man! This one I actually graded in Adobe Premiere because of its built-in workflow for ProRes RAW, but also because, back then, I wasn’t even using DaVinci. Now that I’m slowly learning the ropes in DaVinci, I need to convert ProRes RAW to CinemaDNG before working with it in DaVinci. (Which I haven’t done yet, but I’m probably gonna test in a future video…)
If you want to know more about converting ProRes RAW to CinemaDNG for use in DaVinci, I highly recommend Sidney Baker-Green’s video: ruclips.net/video/Rr7-tyt8aWg/видео.html
My friend, which cable did you use to get the 6k raw?
I used an Atomos HyperThin Micro HDMI to HDMI Cable (www.amazon.de/Kabel-HDMI-Ultra-Ende-Micro/dp/B01GABBRXQ), because the S5 has a micro HDMI port and I didn’t want to have any adapter inbetween camera and the Ninja V.
Great video! What are your main benefits shooting in ProRes Raw?
Thanks, Norain! Well, I guess that’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out over the next couple mini projects…
However, what I already can say after this first test is that ProResRAW gives you so much more latitude with grading: You can pull and push the colors much, much more before the footage breaks apart (as compared to the in-camera 4:2:2 10bit recording).
Additionally, because ProRes RAW retains white-balance and ISO/exposure-data, it’s easy to dial in those settings in post if you messed them up during shooting-which I definitely did a few times with the mixed weather/lighting conditions on that day of shooting.
The other huge benefit is that with 5.9K resolution you can crop/reframe your shots more easily. In fact, some shots in the video are basically pixel-by-pixel readouts from the sensor because I cropped in so hard on them. Generally, I think the 5.9K footage is a bit sharper than the downsampled 4K-options (the S5’s sensor is 6K).
But shooting ProRes RAW comes at a price. You need to buy the Atomos Ninja V as a recording device with a suitable SSD. And ProRes RAW-files are huge; for example, a 19-sec clip has 3,25 GB!
For an in-depth review on shooting ProRes Raw, I can highly recommend this multi-part series: ruclips.net/video/eXPApYc6Id4/видео.html
Hope this helps (for now)!
Beautiful colors! What this shot using all manual focus?
Thanks! Yes, everything focused manually. Though a phenomenal camera, the LUMIX S5 hasn’t got the most reliable autofocus for video, especially when paired with SIGMA lenses. However, the S5 has outstanding focus-assist features, which help tremendously with manual focus, especially if you’re using a bright monitor outdoors such as the ATOMOS Ninja V.
wonderful , I have this lense too the only one i have, But a friend is selling is 35mm 1.8. lumix for 600 canadians, do you think its worth buying it since my sigma already covers the 35 mm lenght ? thank you
Thanks! I absolutely love the Sigma 28-70mm/2.8f; incredible value for its price.
Regarding the 35mm/1.8f Lumix prime: I own two Lumix primes from the series, the 50mm and the 85mm. I do a lot of photo and video work at a museum, which is a notoriously dark place. And to be honest, the Sigma doesn’t really cut it there. So for darker environments, the 1.8f comes in very handy of course.
So yeah, in general, I absolutely do recommend these primes. They’re sharp, they’re super light-weight, and they don’t break the bank.
I’m not so sure about the 35, though. Haven’t really got my head around this specific focal length. For me, it sits oddly between 24mm (if I want it wider) and 50mm (which is a fantastic all-round focal length in general). So, I’m hesitant with giving any recommendations here…
But please, if you go for it, tell me if it’s worth it.
Just one last thing: I do think it’s great to have at least one prime in your arsenal. It may sound kinda strange, but it is a completely different way to shoot (as compared to zoom lenses).
@@lorenz_paulus interesting that you said the sigma didnt cut it in low light , you never go above iso 4000 because it has too much grain in like 6000 ? and yeah i understand what you mean about difference of shooting with primes, i was hesitating on buying better lights or blackmagic video assist but maybe you are right
@@FDFchannel1 Exactly, my personal threshold lies at ISO 5000 (vlog); therefore, I often "violate" the 180° shutter rule just to get a bit more light in (which is totally fine if you have little motion in your shot). But doing so I’m still finding myself at the absolute extreme. With the primes I don’t have to worry about that even in the darker corners of the exhibition space.
@@lorenz_paulus thanx a lot man, on last question what stabilisation mode do u use most often, i use active boost but i find my shots jumping sometimes
@@FDFchannel1 You’re welcome! I had the exact same problem until I realized Boost mode is ONLY for shots where you want to imitate a tripod. That is, a completely still, locked-off shot without panning or tilting involved (because Boost mode may impact those movements as well). So if I want to achieve this kind of stabilization then I turn on Boost (have it assigned to a custom button for fast de/activation).
But otherwise I go with e-stabilization only, which is already very good by itself.
Just wondering what hdmi cable and ssd you are using?
I’m using the Atom X SSDmini by Angelbird (1 TB) and an Atomos HyperThin Micro HDMI To HDMI Cable.
@@lorenz_paulus thank you! You didnt drop any frames at all or any issue? Great colors on your vids!
@@FilmsimulationThanks!
Nope, haven’t had any issues whatsoever…have you?
@@lorenz_paulus I am still on the fence on what to get but checking this video and your other video, the colors from this video is so good! This vlog6 is very crisp and the vlog7 isnt just the same(internal codec). Now im really going to get the ninja v just because of these two comparison! Thank you
@@Filmsimulation Cool, I’m glad my vids could be of value to you in this regard.
But just to be fair, my approach to VLOG#7’s look was quite distinct from that to VLOG#6’s. And it was my first grading exercise in Davinci ever, so that’s also important to keep in mind.
But yeah, there’s a huge difference in how much latitude you have when grading RAW + the 5.9K makes all the difference for reframing your shots easily in post.
