One thing I especially liked about this movie is how they never showed Shrek's human form in the trailer, keeping it as a totally unespected welcome surprise.
Now THAT is how you advertise a movie without giving too much away!
Like Tamatoa in Moana
Actually, they showed his human form in the toys
captain Rockatron Here that Hollywood 2020? TAKE NOTES
nice
One weird thing for me is that I actually think the version of "I Need A Hero" in this movie is the best version I've heard. To make it even more unusual, I understand that Jennifer Saunders is not a professional singer, or at least wasn't at the time.
Thank god I'm not alone. The Shrek 2 soundtrack version with Jennifer Saunders is the one I have on my iPod and rock out to when it comes on.
That akward moment when a fairy tale spoof did your song better than you.
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 Which is saying a lot, because the original Bonnie Tyler version is still an amazing song. Jennifer and this movie just did it better.
I do really like the Saunders version but I always find it kind of weird when people say its better than Tyler's version. Maybe it's because I find Tyler's vocals completely irreplaceable.
This is definitely the best Shrek movie.
100% Agree
"Shrek the third is better"
Some idiot
Agreed
I couldn’t agree more!
@@hckingking I still think it’s a good film it has funny jokes and also the plot is good
And 12 years later... this animation is still some of the best I've ever seen in a CGI movie
Shrek 2 is the BEST Shrek movie ever!
Taylor Z., sorry but I don't like Shrek 2 as much as Shrek 1.
@@lisanettles2731 Your opinion but objectively Shrek 2 is a lot better.
yes
@Mustiboi Salman i agree
yes
Spoilers: He accidentally forgets to do a Dreamworksuary on the Puss in Boots movie and still hasn't 3 years later
Well he did a vlog review.
+ThePotatoKing He did for Frozen as well but he was supposed to do all the Dreamworks films at the time before Rise of the Guardians. He knows it was an accidental skip
+ThePotatoKing he did a sibiling rivalry review of Frozen and still made a disneycember video of it.
He must of have a reason why he didn't review yet
Scsigs OK then.
Anyone else notice Dreamworks is really good at making 2nd movies to their previous movies?
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Shrek 2
Kung Fu Panda 2
you forgot madagascar 2 & 3
@smashLix I HATED Madagascar. Are the sequels any better? The first movie was just way too contrived with all the shoved in there references!
How many references did Madagascar have? I only remember 2: Willy Wonka and National Geographic.
In fact I'd dare to say Shrek 2 had more references than Madagascar.
Pelcogo There was the scene where Alex reenacts the endings scene of the original Planet of the Apes in front of the burning lady liberty.
Fairy godmother: “You’ve made me do something I really don’t want to do.”
King: “what’s going on where are we?”
Fairy godmother: ‘rolls down window and they’re at a fast food restaurant.’ “My diet is ruined!”
Classic lmao
we CANNOT and WILL NOT forget about the Americas Got talent thing they did with Simon Cowell!
American idol
And I love how if you chose a shitty singer to win Simon basically says "fuck it" and says he's the winner. XD
I know. It is such a funny scene.
That movie was hilarious, I considere the best movie of the Shrek franchise, and the only one I do find actually funny after growing up.
Bitch, you and Doug need to learn to appreciate the story of these movies. Shrek is not Madagascar ya know? Its story is more important!
Shrek 2 is to children's animated films what Hot Fuzz is to action cop movies.
Dude, the I Need a Hero part of this movie is nothing short of genius
What is it about Dreamworks sequels usually being some of the company's best? I mean those are usually on Pixar-ish standards
+Ben Wasserman I'm sure it helps that they already have a world and characters to work off of at that point so they can put more time into making creative and interesting situations.
CF-105 Games I said Pixar-ish standards, not Pixar standards. Big difference
CF-105 Games Look, if Dreamworks can make impressively well done emotional moments in some of their movies (Kung Fu Panda 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2), they are obviously doing something right. Does that make them close to Pixar level? NO, but it does show that they can take a few pointers from them and make their films more than just gags and pop culture references.
Credit needs to be given where it is due
CF-105 Games Well you're watching Dreamworks-uary reviews, and Doug has explicitly stated how those two movies as well as KFP2 were amazing. So welcome to fucked up awesome world, sucker
Shrek 2 is honestly a fantastic film. The climax is spectacular.
"Shrek 2 is funny. Shrek 2 is fantastic!"
"Shrek 2" is a great sequel from the last movie. It was very funny for a silly story where Shrek and Fiona went to see her parents from Far Far Away Land. Then, Shrek and his friends bring the potion to break the spell so that Shrek and Fiona bring back to be happily ever after without being ogre. The premise is wonderful, the scenes were funny, and it's actually a great sequel since I remember seen with my sister along with my brother-in-law and my nephew and they enjoy it. All of these characters were memorable especially that buildup at the end is fantastic. As much that you enjoy the second one Doug and I take back the way you hated the first one, but I still hate you for not liking the first. It's a Percy sequel. Overall, my favorite DreamWorks animated film of all time.
Shrek 2 is perfect! I never got tired of this movie as a kid and I can still watch it today with a big dumb smile on my face :)
Shrek 2 is a masterpiece.
Shrek 1 was pretty average, with a lot of hit or miss moments, though I don't think its bad at all.
Shrek 3 was the worst one. The only thing that made me laugh was Eric Idle's wizard guy.
Shrek 4 had the most interesting story imo, and I love the idea that Shrek feels like he's getting old, and married life is slowly taking away his manhood. Very interesting angle, but at the same time, this one didn't make me laugh all that much either.
So, imo, Shrek 2 > 1 > 4 > 3
You have the same list as me
I also agree. I actually think that Shrek 4 is underrated
That is exactly how my husband ranks them :)
AGREED.
Shrek 2: amazing sequel but the tone and eviroments are just not for me personally
Shrek 1: my favorite but I agree that the second is technically better
Shrek 4: I like it a lot honestly but there is some stuff that could've been done better
Shrek 3: I will never revisit that thing again!
and then they made shrek the third. ohno
+The Randomer I hate that one.
***** I thought Shrek 4 was alright
+The Randomer I don't even remember what happens in that one
Shrek Forever after?!
+The Randomer shrek 3 had some great moments though
Shrek 1: light 9/10
Shrek 2: 10/10
Shrek 3: Strong 3/10
Shrek 4: Strong 7/10
Oh yes, the climax was incredible. All aster, no dis.
The part with Puss In Boots attacking Shrek almost made me pee myself! :)
+The Poke'Saurus _poss_
FireofGia Poos?:(
You wrote Poss instead Puss my friend
FireofGia HO, now I get it! Thank you!
Same
This movie also had one of the best soundtracks of any comedy I have ever seen
I think the main problem with the Shrek movies is that there are a ton of contemporary references that in a couple of decades will seem incredibly dated.
+Michael Olivares, it hasn't even been a couple of decades, and yes, it feels dated. Especially in the Latin American dub, they use some meme phrases from time to time (they weren't even called “memes” back then, but they fit the definition), most of which died in the next year.
Oh like nobody's business
which is interesting since shrek 4 & puss in boots will be incredibly dated the least
Michael Olivares Still, there are tons of truly great jokes, besides the charismatic characters and good plot, that more than make for some dated ones.
Best Shrek movie.
This is a film that only I tolerate, but actually enjoy, especially the Starbucks thing at the end and how the customers run away from the starbucks to the one next door
Shrek 2 IS the best family comedy film sequel ever. I loved it ever since I first saw it on DVD way back when I was 9.
I need to see shrek 2 I forget most of it
me too
Putlocker
It is so good, and I really enjoy the pop culture references in it
do it
Nice profile pic!
One of the very few good sequels of the world
I'm with him on the sequel being waaayyy better than the original
I recently rewatched this and am still finding more jokes I missed the first several times. Like when the giant ginger bread man takes the giant cup off of the Farbucks (Starbucks) shop, the frightened customers just run out and into another Farbucks that is directly across the street.
I loved all the references and jokes and well everything
When I was a kid I would watch Shrek 2 over and over again without watching the first. It's that great.
I watched the sequel first and yet I followed everything perfectly and still holds as my favorite Shrek movie after watching all of them. It’s just. So. Good.
Kind of sad that Shrek is relevant again through an obscure video on RUclips as opposed to DreamWorks making him relevant...
Shrek 2 has always been my favorite
One of my favorite CGI animated movies of all time, next to Toy Story 2 and The LEGO Movie.
I thought LM was stop-motion.
Calebite Ah, you got fooled by the trick. While alot of the setpieces like buildings were actually built and used in the movie (not in the live-action bit, I mean the scenes in the LEGO world) the characters and such were animated through a computer. The movie was at one point going to be full-stop motion, but they felt that they couldn't quite get it to work for some of the action scenes so they went with a style that looks stop-motion, but isn't. I believe The Peanuts Movie used a similar trick, only that movie was all CGI.
+isaacplayer42, the Lego Movie was decided to be CGI, among other reasons, because there's literally not enough Lego pieces to build such enormous environments.
Arturo Torres Sánchez
Was that why? Huh, I somehow doubt that but regardless, I love that movie so I don't really care.
*****
> every scene can be recreated with real Legos
No, I don't think they can. But I don't remember where I read about it, anyway.
The best part of Puss is that he's a parody of Zorro, voiced by an actor who actually played Zorro.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought the sequel was far superior to the first.
me too
Erin McGee me too
I grew up with this one it's so good
no I totally agree. I've always liked the second one more, which is saying something because generally sequels are not that great. out of all the shrek movies, 2 was my favorite.
Have I just finally heard Doug saying "great movie" without "buts"?
Now this is more like it, Critic. I happened to catch your first review last week and as a result watched the first and second one this weekend. They are both as funny as I remember them but yeah, this one IS better. It's clever from start to finish, well acted and just hysterically funny.
still awesome 20 years later
They got the second one spot on.
This is one of the few times that I agree 100% with Doug. As a kid I saw Shrek 1 and didn't care for it. It wasn't bad I just didn't enjoy it enough for me to want to see any of the sequels. Than I a couple years ago I was in a 3 hour car ride with a family that had a bunch of little kids so we put Shrek 2 in to watch, and I was blown away with how much I enjoyed it. On the ride back home we rewatched it and I couldn't see it, since I was in the front seat, and I was still laughing out loud just from listening to it.
Dear Modern Movie Companies,
Watch Shrek 2 to learn how to make a sequel.
This is my favorite Shrek film, I absolutely love this movie
I was only nine years old
I loved shrek...
I pray to Shrek every night...

+Jaquiez you make me feel old, I was 21 when this movie came out :P
We had Shrek 1 and 2 growing up and I watched this one probably 50 times more than the original. I loved puss, I loved the musical stuff with the fairy godmother, giant gingy I loved so much of this movie! After watching this it's making me want to see it again!
"I dont feel any different, do i look any different?"
"You still look like an ass to me"
COMEDY GOLD
I agree it's better than the original
Your voice is so great, Doug.
This movie has one of my favorite climaxes of all time, the I Need A Hero segment literally gives me goosebumps every time I watch it
I love this movie. The cover of "I need a hero" is really good, but the K.N.I.G.H.TS segment fucking killed me.
I LOVED this film. Need to see it again.
one of my favourite moments is when the guards are beating up the main trio and donkeys just shouting 'police brutality'
At first I thought that you might not have liked Shrek 2 because of what you said about Shrek. But now I guess I kind've agree. Guess this is what critics are for.
And who could forget holding out for a hero goes amazing and is perfectly synced with the hero’s introduction
"They don't even have dental."
I really like Shrek 1, but man I like Shrek 2 more probably because of the continuation
I loved this movie probably as much as you did. Yes, you.
i'd forgotten about the hawaii five-0 "number" at the beginning. i lost it watching it here.
He Climbs The Tallest Bloody Tower!!!
And finds some gender confused wolf :P
whos actually Nicholas cage in a wolf custome in a grandma custome
The soundtrack was bomb!
Shrek meets Meet the Parents meets Ghostbusters meets Mission Impossible meets.....well, quite a lot more!
this is the one of the only movies in cinematic history when the sequels are better than the original
I never even watched shrek 3 and 4, I literally always just stop at number 2 and try to forget the other ones
Say what you will about it, but that climax was EXACTLY how you use contemporary song reference.
Dreamworks
We can actually make good sequels
I wish to see an audience reaction of the movie to hear the laugh of the people on the cinema
Yakuno Hayashi I remember Shrek 2 being one of the first movies I saw in theaters and I can vaguely remember the whole audience laughing at Pinocchio wearing lady underpants. Although as I got older, I realized why that scene got the most laughs since he’s wearing a thong. Hell, I remember laughing at that scene but I laughed because they mention he was wearing lady underpants and not when they mention the thong.
@@rickalicious1116 I'll admit, the "thong" bit always flew over my head as a kid, since "thongs" have a completely different, more family-friendly meaning here in Australia. It's what we call flip-flops.
This is the best out of all of them.
tbh it kind of annoys be how Doug didn't like the original Shrek on the primary basis that it wasn't funny. Shrek is described as a fantasy adventure film, not a comedy. I think whether a movie is entertaining and well developed trumps whether or not it's funny, since humor is very subjective.
He also said it was boring, as in not very entertaining.
+Nevi1097 I disagree. Shrek was made more as a parody of fairy tales rather than a fantasy adventure film. It was suppose to satirize all the fairy tale elements that Disney had produced (which is why DreamWorks gets the controversy of ripping off or hating on Disney). So in general, it's making fun of Disney and thus we are suppose to laugh at it. If half of the jokes in a parody/comedy did not work, then the movie just falls flat because you went in the movie expecting to laugh. And the fact that Shrek was a movie specifically to get back at Disney doesn't help it either. Yes, it has fantasy elements to it, but the movies primary motivation is to make us laugh.
+MusicalKittens Cough Opinion Cough
+Nevi1097 No, it's first and foremost a satire, so a comedy. And frankly, while I do like the first Shrek a lot, Shrek 2 is just fantastic.
I see where he's coming from though, I always gave thought the original shrek movie was a little dull and boring, as a kid I actually preferred to watch the 3rd movie. Shrek 2 though, I've always loved. So many quoteable funny scenes(the bit in which the king queen shrek and Fiona are all around the table yelling at each other and then donkey just yells his name is one of my favorite comedic bits in any movie
The only thing I would change would be the ending. A third movie about Shrek as a human would be awesome then they could turn back into ogres by the end of it and the forth movie is underrated imo.
My favorite Shrek movies in order:
1.Shrek 2
2.Shrek 4
3.Shrek 1
4.Shrek 3
20 years later and this is another example of how you do a sequel right
The second film greatly improves on the first film's story by introducing a bunch of fun secondary characters such as The Fairy Godmother who puts a twist on her role, Puss in Boots who's sort of a Zorro-esque player, and Fiona's parents
The romance is also handled very delicately with Shrek willing to make all kinds of changes to make it work and to make Fiona happy developing them even further
The jokes, the pacing, the pop cultural references from Mission Impossible to ET to Justin Timberlake, and the timing are just brilliant, much of it stems from the animation company's bitterness towards Disney
It also makes a smart move making fun of celebrity and upper-class culture despite being slightly dated
Even the animation looks so much smoother The climax is very exciting and suspenseful mixing in Ghostbusters' and a terrific song number mixed with orchestra
This movie subverted the fairy tale tropes and had some of their best comedy writers on board, it's a shame parts 3 and 4 started dipping in quality afterwards
Thankfully this second installment is all about the destination...or finding your happily ever after even after it's happened afraid it might not actually exist
Happiness is possible but it's not always smooth sailing which is okay plus we can always accept ourselves even those we love don't
‘Shrek 2' is a great sequel as well as a consistently funny comedy with gags, jokes, and some heartfelt messages sprinkled in with much of the thematic relevance still there
I really loved this Shrek sequel
I love the movie so much
Shrek 2 is my favorite movie from my childhood.
I feel the exact same honestly. I've never really understood why so many people love the first Shrek, but I absolutely love this movie.
This was the only Shrek movie growing up that we actually owned on DVD, and I rewatched it constantly, it's such a fun film
This is the movie of my childhood I watched it nonstop XD
*GASP*
THIS VIDEO WAS RELEASED ON MY BIRTHDAY, ABOUT MY FAVOURITE SHREK MOVIE. COINCIDENCE?! I...THINK... *NOT*
O_O
I love this movie too
While I not always completely agree with Doug this is the thing where we are on exact same level. I think that Shrek 2 was not only the best in Shrek series but maybe the best animated movie of its genre (so something like parody & adventure:)
Tis film is just filled up to the top with great details, mostly original jokes ("Quick! Tell a lie! Say something crazy...like I'm wearing a lady's underwear..."), pleasantly fast yet not hasty pacing, kinetic action, actual character development, devious and strong villain and even some well picked songs that suits the story.
Shrek 2 is not striving to be an art (like for example Secret of Kells, another amazing movie) but what it does it does superbly. One of the rare movies I can watch over and over again and enjoy it every time even though I know it by heart.
Absolutely my favorite Shrek movie.
Behind "The Prince of Egypt" this is my Favorite DreamWorks Movie.
How good is Shrek 2? Good enough that one my teachers from high school apparently show it when talking about Satire in Literature.
i have to go rewatch this movie now
remember when fairy godmother said her son went up a tower to find a gender confused wolf? i didn't catch that joke until rewatching years later. glob that is so brilliant
When the fairy god mother sang “I need a hero” I came lmao
Shrek 2 it's excellent.
The first one (even when I like it) it's just ok. But this one it's awesome. Far superior to any other Shrek movie.
Shrek 2 is an excellent movie my friends agree with me
Step aside Miyazaki. THIS is the greatest anime movie of all time!
The scene with the horn always gets me
Best Shrek movie!
Pause at 1:53 . It's a furious dab.
I agree Shrek 2 was miles better
one of the best sequels ever
I describe each sequel as an adjective:
Shrek 1: Fun
Shrek 2: Funky (and Awesome)
Shrek The Third: Weird
Shrek Forever After: Dark (and Epic)
Nostalgic Critic should totally do a review on this movie
id prefer he do kung fu panda
He's not going to talk about the fact that somehow Donkey Impregnated a Dragon? No? Ok.
my almost 2 year old randomly decides that he wants to watch this movie. he'll put it in and replay it over and over again and again .
i used to like it... now that i can recite it line for line I'm over it.
