  • During the height of early 2000's web animation, I got hooked on a radical talking squirrel living with a goth girl. But over time, the web series changed, for better and for worse. Now, I don't even recognize it anymore.

Hey @NegativeLegend . No worries, I'm not angry, I've heard worse over 20 years and it's fine that people have varied opinions. I'm not here to change that.
As for the series, I just like to make what I feel like working on and folks either like it or don't. I've always worked that way, and at some point, if I feel there's nothing more to do with the series, it'll end, but I generally still like the characters and tend to change up styles or stories from time to time to keep it interesting for myself and hopefully others.
Also not sure why you would think I would be mean. The squirrel is "mean" depending on one's perspective, but it is a character. A squirrel that really doesn't like people. I mean, how many of his kind have been run down by cars! You'd be an angry squirrel too! :)
Joking aside, as real life goes, I try to be as nice as possible. The world has enough toxicity in it, I don't want to add to that.
Unfortunately though, I do tend to keep to myself and I guess that comes off as "mean" or puts people off.

I know it kinda did years ago as most people with asocial behavior are usually looked at as if they're being rude by not engaging. Just socially awkward I guess. So if anyone got that impression over the years, sorry about that. I've always just been the shy/quiet type. The downside of being quiet is that silence tends to allow people to use their imagination as to how I would act, and since Foamy is their only reference point, they tend to go with that and assume I would be mean.
How come no one thinks I'm Pilz-E IRL, it's always the mean one! I DO have glasses!!! :)
As for changing with the times, idk. I'm generally out of sync with just about everything in life, always have been, and I'm fine with that. I never quite fit in anywhere and I don't think that'll ever change, so why chase trends, seek acceptance or approval. I am what I am. Nothin' special. Just some doodler making cartoons and comics. I'm happy with that and I'm appreciative to folks who have supported my ability to do what I love.
Not sure if any of this gives anyone some insight into my mindset, personality or my approach to the series, but I figure I'd at least let folks know I'm not a mean squirrel-humanoid monster or somethin'. Also, sorry if this is really long to read.
I wish you and your viewers the best. Be well :)

"These kinds of videos were really just food for pessimistic people. That blamed all their problems on everyone and everything else." -Negative Legend, 2024
Gee, that sounds pretty much like 85% of the Internet right there, and I'm more than likely underestimating that percentage.
And anyone who thinks this sort of perspective has gone stale, and has the gall to be farming content by pointing out all the cracks and bubbled, warped surfaces and patchwork repairs? Yeah, imagine that. Over twenty years? Can you think of anything that's not going to get stale over that period of time without kowtowing to modern conventions and losing what it is in the process? This channel here has half that span of time clocked in, and with far less frequency and consistency, with only a coin purse amount of its 'old shame' on display compared to Neurotically Yours. If this channel here is still doing things in another 10 years, you can be sure somebody is going to be making the same take on them and their video content. Especially when so many creators these days seem to self-destruct from their own degenerate shenanigans, the creator of Foamy has kept relatively clean personally.
And if all this sounds like a narcissistic vibe? It means one is comfortable not seeking out the validation and approval of everyone around them. Which is something I'm sure Gen Z is going to push to make a mandate for: That by law, you're required to regularly express your validation and support to anyone they deem requires it, I know it's on the horizon in the coming years. Because they are getting increasingly frustrated in their pursuit of wringing it out of everyone and everything, because they've become so mentally and emotionally fragile in the bubbles of escapism, that they've so meticulously crafted for themselves. All while blaming everyone else for how the world is today ( which the Boomers were actually the first to do, when they invented Counterculture ).
It has been a long ride, and the saddle sores are there to prove it. Neurotically Yours and Foamy have had their own subtle and not so subtle transformations in that period, but in life you can only keep up who you are for so long without the wear and tear you've accumulated causing everyone who comes in contact with you to call your presence abrasive to their own lifestyle. And the attempts to keep chugging down the road are going to feel as awkward and hobbled as the first steps that were taken, just like it is for everyone that ages. And anyone who has been watching Foamy this long is in denial if they don't think foamy is a mouthpiece/soapbox, but there are a lot, LOT worse mouthpieces out there, and few that are better.
I'd like to end this by giving my own mention of gratitude to the creator of Foamy and Neurotically Yours, for all the time you've put in for this long, and for weathering all the slings and arrows that you've carried during that time.
      Thank you.

Also in general after being on the internet for twenty odd years I grew tired of "satirical" rants. Where it's someone telling the truth and it should be common sense when you agree with it, but just a character that you shouldn't take seriously if you disagree.

I'm 39. I was born in 1985. I graduated high school in 2003. I grew up during the 90s, and was a teenager in the late 90's/early 2000's. My little black goth heart LOVED (and I still love) Hot Topic. I spent just about every weekend in my teens at the mall (prior to the Hot Topic website and online ordering) and going to Hot Topic.
I bought and still have the JTHM and Squee comic books by Jhonen Vasquez. I didn't buy the individual ones. I bough the Complete Edition ones, and I just recently got the Complete Edition of all the Filler Bunny comics he did. I also loved Foamy the Squirrel, but this was back in the day, when I would be on Vampire Freaks. That was the Foamy I loved. Eventually, it just got old and just didn't really have a narrative, like you were talking about. JTHM and Squee though? Amazing narrative and very, very meta, and absolutely hilarious.
Fun fact: My online screen name, Myra, came from a magazine I read when I was 16 at Hot Topic (Gothic Beauty). I saw a model, and her name was Vladimira, and I loved the name, so I adopted it as my online screen name, and I've used some variation of Vladimira/Vladimyra/Myra ever since. Lol.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that Jim has been banished from Newgrounds. He recently began using AI artwork for some of his new foamy cartoons(and once again, he changed the style for this too). Except nobody on Newgrounds took this well. He began using AI on the short August 4th of 2023, it wasn't noticeable at first. Except it became quite noticeable in some of the later stuff that he produced for Newgrounds, along with using AI to promote some of the stuff he creates. The last straw for him being on Newgrounds was with the short 'Car', and NOBODY was having any of it of Jim using AI for the backgrounds in his cartoons. As of writing. Jim hasn't uploaded anything new onto Newgrounds because of this, he's mostly posting his stuff on youtube since youtube doesn't care if someone uses AI or not. Content is content to the mindset of the people who run youtube. If you think about it. Jim used Foamy as a way to speak out about the world problems(as well as addressing some bad business practices) except now he became a shell of his former self as an artist to speak out for the little guy since he is now using AI for his backgrounds rather than actually hiring someone to make them, and to any artist, that's insulting.
If I would give advice to Jim I would do this. Reset your mentality since health always comes first. Figure out WHAT made Foamy great in the first place, get with the times that the edgelord teenagers that you were entertaining are now in their 30s. And get rid of AI altogether and if you dont want to draw backgrounds, PAY SOMEBODY to do em. There are a SHITLOAD of people who would gladly work for you for a reasonable price to do simple backgrounds just for a either a minute or a two minute skit with Foamy.

And as much as people love to generate bile about mass production, I don't see them throwing away the stuff they bought at the discount store on their shoestring budget, and drive triple digit miles out to some country roadside crafts exhibit, to pick up hand crafted housewares. Acting like people should have only original ideas is part of the reason so many people don’t get into creative expression because they think they need to make stuff thats literally never been done or thought of before to actually be respected. I remember my groomer introducing me to Foamy when I was 14. I didn't really understand most of it but thought it was funny because of the grumpy squirrel and the silly voice, but I remember feeling weird about the female character in it. The way she was drawn was creepy to me.
I stopped watching Foamy after being separated from the guy who introduced me to it (thank God for overprotective parents who maybe weren't so overprotective in that situation ngl) but about a year ago I rediscovered Foamy on RUclips and was like omg I remember this, I can't breathe it's still going! But after watching the suggested video it just... wasn't funny. The guy writing it just seems mad at everyone for living. Idk. It made me reflect on those early teenage years and wonder why I ever found it funny in the first place.
I guess it was because Foamy was kind of like the groomer, a grumpy cussing jerk. Idk. Foamy is part of a weird time for my life. But I'm pretty happy to leave him in the past.
My favorite character was Pill-Z who had some songs about getting away from reality using pills. I thought it was hilarious and I still have the lyrics of that one video memorized... but strangely I didn't fully understand what it was actually about. I didn't know what it meant to get high, or to @buse prescription medication. I was really innocent and naive, and my groomer told me one of the rules of the internet was that "the more pure and innocent something is, the more satisfying it is to corrupt it" and I think Foamy was part of his attempts to corrupt me over time.

I never stopped watching Foamy since starting in the early 2000's but it has gotten increasingly frustrating to watch. Besides the rants, and other miscellaneous things the series actually had a story and the main story ends with Foamy rebooting the universe solely for Germaine's benefit. It kind of went the Rick & Morty route with the series having multiple universes/timelines and having different art styles for each which made sense at the time. Now there's no story at all which would've been fine but now it seems the creator is just throwing a bunch of stuff at the wall to see what sticks, never finishes any of the side series and constantly changes art styles which is jarring. 1st the Island series with one of the side characters, then the comic series which is just comic panels with voiceovers and now the "Bits" series which is a few seconds of something happening and then a bunch of ads close to half if not more than half the length of the video. There isn't much of anything of value to watch on his channel anymore in my opinion. His channel has more "live streaming" stuff that I never cared for more than actual cartoons which is not the reason I subscribed to his channel in the first place. The rants are the only thing worth watching if you haven't gotten tired of them yet.

Foamy has changed quite a bit in terms of character, and I'd say that's less because of in-universe reasons, and more because Johnathan is a different person. If Foamy was just a character all along, I don't think we would've seen quite so much of that.

OR fans act as though it is some sort of insult to humanity, forgetting the media is not real. Even worse, some of these great shows, like Glitch Techs, are buried and never talked about, and then the studio turns around and then the networks talks about how they're not going to make any new IPs. Ehhh, the OG Foamy shorts were great, because it was silly and funny... but I think, it was really just the age of the era. I remember even seeing Foamy DVD's at hot topic of all things. I think, the creator spent too much time focusing on sex, the amount of reboots was so annoying and then the rants just kinda... got old. Like, it was edgy humor for goth teenagers, not adults. My favorite was the Amityville Toaster skit.
I eventually grew out of it, because I didn't enjoy the amount of changes made and the redesigns just felt dumb. I also got tired of the creators fetishes being shoved into the show constantly.
So, if it's around still I'm surprised, but I got tired of it.

I was a big fan of Foamy in high school. I wound up loosing touch with the series as other media drew my interest. Then a decade and a half later a recently made Foamy rant showed up in my RUclips feed. I watched it out of nostalgia. What I remember of it was Foamy complaining about "wokeness". At the time I was a bit disappointed but not surprised. What I had originally seen as counterculture edginess in my teens had fully metastasized into reactionary rage and I didn't bother with anything else from that creator. But ultimately a point comes where the counterculture becomes the actual culture; and since the culture is unabashedly progressive and earnest, it stands to reason that edgelord pseudo-conservative contrarianism is where all the counterculture is at

Pointing out how sensitivities have changed only the years and how it affected the channel and RUclips being more "puritan" but only toward independent creators. J.I.M. not changing is bad for a career but on social media but personally admirable. "this is who I am, I don't need to change with the world" is a mentality that takes having a strong backbone, or it's internally and they're just emotionally/mentally stunted.
Personally can say I've had very few changes of my beliefs over the last 10 years, if I was a creator who content was bad on critiquing society, probably would end up like foamy.

  • @razor8191
    @razor8191 5 месяцев назад +5

I used to watch Foamy all the time, and I remember teenage me mostly liking it. But more importantly, there really was nothing else like it back in the day because content was literally a bottleneck. There weren't that many internet celebrities years ago since very few people had the resources or time to do almost daily uploads to Newgrounds or RUclips in those days.
However, as time went by I grew more skeptical with Foamy and his rants, especially the ones about mental health. It got to the point where he straight-up told people to not take anti-depressant drugs because it was "unnatural." The final straw came days after Charlottesville where Foamy went on this extremely nihilistic rant about how actually all people are bad and bunch other pseudo intellectual garbage.
Looking back on 2000's internet culture, there's a ton of cynicism, bitterness, and meanness that defines a whole lot of it. Foamy is basically content for an era that doesn't exist anymore.

  • @Lancun
    @Lancun 5 месяцев назад +11

"A strong, narcissistic tone is really the overarching joke of this series." The lack of self-awareness from this billboard of narcissism with the "wtf is this" avatar and the big-boobed catgirl on the screen in the background whining about sexualization of cartoon characters. You don't like the rants because they point out the truth that people don't want to accept and they're more relevant than ever with how crazy has become acceptable. When a cartoon squirrel is more sane than human caricatures who pop up in recommended videos, you know society has lost the plot.

I still watch foamy. I blame it on gen x humor. Lol. There's a lot of issues with the creator, but I see him as a modern Steve Ditko or Morrissey, where you question the truth and the persona.
Jhonen C. Vasquez environment makes sense for that time. The bay area, before the gentrification, had a lot of artists. Diego Rivera had a mural at the San Francisco Art Institute. Murals were everywhere (sadly many were destroyed). My school would have field trips to the bay area especially if you were in art club. Meeting artists, artists informing you the different types of art (including animation), etc...

i remember loving this series when i was admittedly _way_ too young to be watching it (also i'm currently 19, younger than the series itself, so it was way past its prime when i started watching lol), and looking back so many of the takes and just general stuff that happened that were in it are just...absolutely unhinged...and not really in a good way??
i grew up with this, then htf _and_ dhmis, and it feels Very Weird, honestly the only consolation i have is that i was never interested in shane dawson's stuff, and that's all i've got going for me in that regard lmfao.
i definitely wish a lot of animated stuff wasn't so sanitized, but there has to be a balance, so many people seem to just accept that since they watch a lot of traumatizing material when they were younger, that every kid should be exposed to shit that messes them up or puts these harmful ideas out there, and i don't think that's right either. that probably sounds like some "think of the children!!!" stuff, but i definitely think there's a middle ground between that and the "people are too soft nowadays!" mindset i've seen from a lot of people.

I've never clicked on a video so fast. I used to watch this series as a teen but even then there were themes that made me kind of uncomfortable but it had a lot of messages that I generally agreed with that really weren't all that popular at the time so it came across as progressive edgy to my child mind. I hit around 19-20 and tried to revisit it after realizing that there were new episodes and....I hated it. I was stunned and went to go watch old episodes I know I showed friends and really liked growing up and they don't hold up the way I hoped.
I like the general concept and I think he was one of the first creators to have like an animated rant channel where they were just unapologetically angry and fed up.
But it's strange when you get to an age to be critical of the media that taught you to be critical of the world around you and questioning the status quo and you realize that the rhetoric you walked away from the media with must also be questioned and that you'll absolutely find fault in it. It doesn't take away from the fact that I think Foamy helped me be a little more outspoken about what I believed and felt but I also internalized some misogynistic values and centrist beliefs that don't hold up in real life and I still had to grow past that. I admired his work and while it did motivate me in positive ways ...it also did in negative ways too.
I'm literally typing this before even watching the video because wow I already have so many feelings about this. I feel like Foamy wasn't super popular - I introduced all of my friends to it when it was usually me being shown media - and the comment section has been really interesting. I didn't realize other fans - or long term haters - felt similarly about the series and its inevitable decline. Partially due to fans aging out and questioning some of the things he said and partially due to the content getting a little....😬 No one really has a lifetime career online but it was kind of disappointing to watch in real time.
