      @@chrisprice9289 You may have had your question answered by now. The issue was that the Romans were occupying the lands that they had conquered. They kept a large military presence in each country. They brutally crushed any rebellion using strong violence and torture. These standing armies were not supported by Rome, however. They were fed and housed by taxes raised on the non Roman people who lived there. The taxes were collected by local people like Zaccheus and Matthew. They were traitors. They often collected more than was actually required and kept that for themselves. There wasn't any legal recourse against them cheating, because the Romans didn't care. So the tax collector was the most reviled and despised person in any town.
